Government recruitment exam fraud allegedly leads to shooting in PhatthalungLegacyThe house of the president of the subdistrict municipality council in Phattalung was damaged in a shooting, allegedly following a dispute over fraud in the local government recruitment exam. Several news outlets reported the incident, but police have not yet issued an official statement confirming details of the shooting. According to reports, gunfire struck the council president’s house in Srinakarin district, Phatthalung. The shooting caused property damage, but no injuries were reported. KhaoSod said the number of suspects involved remains unclear. Media reports suggested the incident may be linked to ongoing disputes surrounding local government recruitment examinations held last year. Photo via SpringNews According to allegations cited in reports, the council president collected money from applicants in exchange for promises to help them secure positions through the examination process. Applicants were reportedly asked to pay an initial deposit of 325,000 baht, with an additional payment expected after results were announced. Reports stated that some applicants did not receive the positions they had expected, leading them to demand refunds. The council president allegedly refused to return the money, which some reports suggested may have contributed to the shooting. These allegations remain unverified. The council president’s 76 year old mother denied the accusations in comments to the media. She insisted her son had no involvement in any fraudulent operation and rejected claims that he benefited financially. Photo via Channel 3 Media reports also alleged that the council president was not the only person under scrutiny in the wider case. Teachers, mayors, technicians from provincial administrative offices and other members of subdistrict municipal councils in Phatthalung were also mentioned as possible suspects. No formal charges have been announced. The reported shooting comes amid a broader investigation into recruitment exam fraud following arrests in Nonthaburi on June 22. Investigators alleged that suspects altered answer sheets to help paying applicants secure positions in local administrative organisations. The investigation has since expanded to examine other possible links. Srinakharinwirot University and related personnel are also under scrutiny as part of the wider probe, as the university was contracted to organise the examination. Thailand awaits UNESCO decision on Nakhon Si Thammarat templeLegacyThailand is optimistic that Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat will be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list following consideration next month. Deputy spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office Lalida Persvivatana said yesterday, June 22, that the government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul continues to prioritise the conservation, restoration and promotion of Thailand’s cultural and natural heritage. Lalida said these efforts are intended to strengthen national pride while supporting Thailand’s soft power strategy and promoting high-quality tourism on the global stage. As part of this effort, Thailand submitted Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Photo via Wat Phra Mahathat According to Lalida, the nomination has received a positive response from the advisory body to the World Heritage Committee. The advisory body recognised the temple’s outstanding cultural significance as a site reflecting religious diversity, faith and spiritual traditions spanning more than 1,500 years. The temple is also regarded as an important centre for the spread of religion, art and cultural influence across Southeast Asia. Lalida said the progress reflects more than a decade of collaboration among multiple government agencies. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, along with relevant departments, has spent over 10 years carrying out research, conservation work and site management to meet international standards. Photo by pattarawutk via Getty Images The nomination of Wat Phra Mahathat will be reviewed during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, scheduled to take place in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 29. The review of cultural heritage nominations is expected to take place between July 24 and 26. If approved, Wat Phra Mahathat would become the ninth UNESCO World Heritage Site in Thailand. It would also become Thailand’s sixth cultural World Heritage Site and the first cultural World Heritage Site in southern Thailand. Officials said the designation would represent a major milestone for Thailand while also boosting tourism potential in Nakhon Si Thammarat and the wider southern region. Photo via Wat Phra Mahathat The listing is expected to create economic opportunities for local communities, increase tourism revenue and support long-term heritage conservation. Thailand currently has eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The country’s cultural World Heritage Sites include Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet Historical Parks, Ayutthaya Historical Park, Ban Chiang Archaeological Site, Si Thep Ancient City and Phu Phra Bat Historical Park. Thailand’s natural World Heritage Sites include Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex and Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex. TAT And AirAsia MOVE Sign Three-Year Tourism Partnership

TAT and AirAsia MOVE signed a three-year partnership to boost Thailand tourism through digital campaigns and targeted marketing, leveraging the online travel platform's 17 million monthly users across Asia.

23 Jun TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 23 June 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and AirAsia MOVE, one of Asia’s leading online travel agencies, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under “TAT x MOVE: Seamless Journey, Amazing Thailand” to expand digital travel promotion, connect traveller insights with targeted campaigns, and stimulate travel to and across Thailand.

The MOU covers co-branded campaigns, content promotion, and joint marketing initiatives across TAT’s channels and the AirAsia MOVE platform. The three-year partnership aims to strengthen Thailand’s position as a world-class tourism destination and apply traveller insights from key markets across Asia and beyond to more focused destination marketing.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “Digital platforms are reshaping how travellers discover, plan, and experience destinations. Through AirAsia MOVE’s regional reach and traveller insights, TAT can connect online inspiration with real travel choices, support major and emerging destinations, and create stronger opportunities for local tourism businesses nationwide. This collaboration advances the Platform Economy under the Amazing 5 Economy framework, while reinforcing TAT’s direction to promote UNESCO Creative Cities, green destinations, and tourism growth that delivers wider value across the country.”

AirAsia MOVE will activate its regional platform and more than 17 million monthly active users to raise awareness of Thai destinations, spotlighting Thailand’s ‘Five Must-Do’ experiences. The partnership will connect travel interest with local tourism operators, broaden access to emerging destinations, and support wider distribution of visitor spending nationwide.

Ms. Nadia Omer, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia MOVE, said, “This partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand is a pivotal step in advancing regional travel. By actively supporting the ‘Platform Economy’ pillar of the Amazing 5 Economy framework, AirAsia MOVE is uniquely positioned to accelerate this growth. Over the next three years, we will leverage our expansive ecosystem and data-driven insights to transform traveller aspiration into action, directly funnelling demand to local operators, empowering communities, and fostering sustainable economic growth across Thailand.”

The collaboration supports TAT’s strategic move to convert travel interest into visits, broaden visitor flows across destinations, and create wider value for tourism businesses nationwide.

In support of the collaboration, AirAsia MOVE shared seven travel trends shaping Thailand tourism in the first half of 2026, based on traveller behaviour and booking data across its regional travel ecosystem. Asia remained the primary driver of inbound travel, with Malaysia, India, China, and Indonesia continuing as top source markets for Thailand.

Younger travellers continued to influence travel patterns, with the 30–39 age group remaining among the largest traveller segments. These travellers seek more personalised and meaningful experiences, including adventure, local culture, culinary discovery, and immersive activities. Free Independent Travel also remained strong, with solo travellers accounting for 59.57% of all bookings.

India emerged as a star market, with family and large-group travellers making up more than 43% of Indian visitors, many staying for seven to 15 days. Travellers from India also recorded the highest revenue per booking on the platform, with demand increasingly coming from secondary cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, and Ahmedabad.

Indonesia demonstrated strong loyalty and meaningful travel opportunities, with couple travellers accounting for 24.71% of Indonesian bookings and 73.4% of seats sold coming from AirAsia Members. The trend points to opportunities for destinations such as Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Samui to attract Indonesian travellers seeking authentic local experiences, nature, wellness, and memorable getaways.

The United States remained an important long-haul source market, with travellers aged 50 and above accounting for 32% of US visitors on the platform. With a 77% round-trip booking rate, these travellers tended to stay longer, spend more, and use Thailand as a gateway to Southeast Asia. East Asian travellers from China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan continued to show strong spending power, with more than 70% staying in Thailand for up to five days, creating opportunities for premium short breaks, city escapes, festivals, and event-driven tourism.

These insights support TAT’s efforts to sharpen product promotion, respond to changing traveller behaviour, and connect more visitors with meaningful travel experiences across Thailand.

Cabinet Approves Mangrove Use for Koh Lanta Bridge

Thailand's Cabinet approved using 14,470 square metres of mangrove forest for a 2.5-kilometre bridge connecting Koh Klang and Koh Lanta Noi in Krabi, with a 1.8 billion baht budget and requirements for extensive environmental restoration.

Use of reserved mangrove forest approved for the Koh Lanta bridgeLegacyThailand’s Cabinet approved the use of mangrove forest for the Koh Lanta bridge project in Krabi, clearing a major step for the long-planned transport development in southern Thailand. Deputy spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office Lalida Phersviewatthana announced yesterday, June 18, that the Cabinet approved the Department of Rural Roads’ request to use approximately 14,470 square metres of mangrove forest land for construction. The land will be used for the Koh Lanta bridge project linking Koh Klang and Koh Lanta Noi in Krabi province. Lalida said the Koh Lanta bridge is a major transport infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in southern Thailand. The bridge will span 2.527 kilometres and is designed to improve travel between Koh Klang on the Krabi mainland and Koh Lanta Noi. Photo via ThaiRath The development will include a cable-stayed bridge, a cantilever bridge, three U-turn points, two viewing points on the bridge and connecting roads on both sides. The project is intended to reduce travel delays caused by ferry services, ease traffic congestion and improve transport convenience for residents, tourists and freight operators. According to Lalida, the total project budget stands at 1.8 billion baht, comprising 1.26 billion baht in foreign loans and 540 million baht from the national budget. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has not objected to the development but has required the Department of Rural Roads to strictly follow environmental protection measures outlined in the Environmental Impact Assessment report. Photo via ThaiRath The department is also required to carry out mangrove reforestation covering at least 20 times the area used for construction and complete all legal land-use approval procedures. Lalida said the government remains committed to balancing infrastructure development with environmental protection. She said restoration, mitigation and compensation measures would be implemented to ensure long-term sustainability while protecting natural resources. Photo via Bangkokbiznews A similar large-scale transport project is also under consideration in southern Thailand. Last year, officials proposed a bridge linking Koh Samui to mainland Surat Thani. The proposed bridge is expected to stretch 37 kilometres, with approximately 25 kilometres crossing the Gulf of Thailand. According to the latest update, the Koh Samui bridge project remains in the public hearing stage. Officials expect the proposal to be submitted for Cabinet approval in 2027, with construction projected for completion between 2033 and 2034.
