5 Aug Khaosod

The Cabinet has approved the Khlong Wang Ton reservoir project in Chanthaburi province with a 7.2 billion baht budget and a seven-year implementation timeline (fiscal 2027–2033), according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Pattaradashmi Thongsalveekorn. The project aims to strengthen water security in the Eastern region and support growing demand from households, agriculture, industry, and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) development zone.

With a capacity of 99.50 million cubic meters, the reservoir will supply water to approximately 87,700 rai of irrigable land and provide water resources for consumption, farming, and industrial use in Chanthaburi province. The project is one of 38 key water-source development initiatives under the EEC support plan and will enhance long-term water management capacity for the Eastern region.

Official statements emphasized that the project must strictly comply with all applicable laws and requirements from relevant agencies, particularly regarding permits for use of reserved forest and national park areas before construction begins. The Cabinet also approved the "Stable Rural Home" project, to be implemented jointly by the Royal Irrigation Department and the Community Organizations Development Institute (Public Organization), providing housing assistance and fair compensation to residents affected by the construction.

Government Tackles Garbage Crisis at Phutap Boek-Khao Kho Tourism Sites
5 Aug Khaosod

Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin announced that the government has tasked the Pollution Control Department (PCD) with coordinating multi-sector cooperation to urgently address waste management at the Phutap Boek-Khao Kho tourism area in Phetchabun province. The effort aims to preserve the integrity of the watershed, reduce environmental impact, and improve the quality of Thailand's tourist attractions. Suchat noted that both sites currently experience heavy tourist traffic, resulting in continuous increases in waste volume. Efficient waste management—including source separation, waste reduction, and proper disposal—will help conserve natural resources, reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and build a positive image for Thailand's tourism sector. Dr. Surin Vorakitdamrong, director-general of the PCD, stated that the department is coordinating with local government organizations, communities, and local business operators to implement systematic waste management. The initiative promotes source-level waste separation and community and business participation, positioning Phutap Boek–Khao Kho as a model low-carbon tourism destination. The director-general added that this effort will improve quality of life for local residents, reduce the waste management burden on local administrative organizations, maintain cleanliness and beauty of the tourist sites, build tourist confidence, generate long-term income for communities, and advance Thailand's sustainable development that balances growth with conservation of natural resources and the environment.

Cabinet Approves Data Center Policy Board to Monitor Energy Impact
5 Aug Khaosod

The cabinet has green-lighted the establishment of a "Data Center Business Policy Committee" to manage energy and environmental impacts while welcoming investment in this emerging industry, emphasizing that business operations must deliver genuine benefits to the country. Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek explained that Thailand's policy aims to elevate economic and social potential through the digital economy, requiring updated investment promotion systems to support target industries—particularly data centers, a future-focused sector attracting substantial foreign investor attention.

However, to ensure such operations truly benefit economic development without compromising energy security, resource management (water, electricity, land, environment), or national data security, clear policies and guidelines are necessary. The cabinet therefore approved the draft regulation establishing a "Data Center Business Policy Committee," as submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Pakaorn Nilpraphan.

The committee will comprise a deputy PM as chair; three cabinet ministers (Digital Economy and Society, Interior, and Energy) as vice chairs; twelve government officials including permanent secretaries from Finance, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Energy, and Interior ministries, plus heads of the National Water Resources Office and Energy Policy Office; and up to three expert advisors appointed by the PM.

The committee will propose policies, standards, and frameworks for state agencies to approve, permit, or provide services to data center operators, while studying and monitoring the business's environmental and resource impacts. Its focus areas include clean energy use, energy security, fair energy pricing, equitable water allocation, efficient electricity and water usage, urban planning, public safety (especially fire prevention), data security, environmental and community impact mitigation, and carbon neutrality frameworks.

Cabinet Approves 14.7 Billion Baht Flood Relief Plan for Phetchaburi
5 Aug Khaosod

The Cabinet has approved a 14.7 billion baht flood mitigation project for the lower Phetchaburi River basin, to be implemented over 10 years (fiscal years 2027–2036) to permanently solve flooding in Phetchaburi city. Deputy Government Spokesperson Phattharadarsami Thongsluaykorn announced that the Cabinet endorsed the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, through the Royal Irrigation Department, to carry out the "Lower Phetchaburi River Basin Flood Mitigation Project Based on the Royal Initiative," with a total budget of 14.7 billion baht over the 10-year period. The project includes upgrading and excavating new drainage canals totaling 38.92 kilometers, running from above Phetchaburi Dam in Tha Yang district to a discharge point into the Gulf of Thailand in Cha-am district, Phetchaburi province. This will enhance water drainage capacity to the gulf, increase water sources, and reduce flood damage affecting over 33,690 rai. However, because the drainage outlet must pass through approximately 162 rai of mangrove forest, the Cabinet approved an exemption to existing restrictions on mangrove use, with the condition that relevant agencies implement strict environmental measures and monitor ecosystem impacts. The Cabinet also directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to accelerate land acquisition processes, ensure fair compensation payments, and foster community participation to achieve project targets and maximize public benefit.
