Thailand Pivots Tourism to Value Over Volume With Healing Economy Strategy
Thailand is shifting its tourism strategy from visitor volume to high-value experiences, positioning the nation as a healing destination through a seminar that brought together health and wellness experts to develop sustainable tourism prod
The Tourism Authority of Thailand, through TAT Academy, hosted a seminar on 27 September 2026 called "Healing Economy: New Opportunities in Health-Wellness-Longevity Tourism Business" at Siam Paragon in Bangkok, with Atthapol Wankij, director of tourism research and development, presiding. The event convened experts from health, wellness, and longevity industries to exchange knowledge, forge partnerships, and position Thailand as a high-value, sustainable healing destination.
The seminar reflects Thailand's tourism strategy shift from volume to value, with the Tourism Authority acting as an ecosystem facilitator coordinating government, private sector, operators, and partners. The new tourism value proposition draws on Thailand's existing strengths: standard-certified medical care, traditional Thai medicine, massage, spas, herbal products, health-focused cuisine, natural landscapes, culture, local wisdom, and distinctive service quality. These assets can be developed into high-value wellness experiences appealing to modern travelers seeking not just rest but holistic physical and mental rejuvenation, enhanced quality of life, and reinforcing Thailand's image as a sanctuary of healing.
Attendees engaged in four main activities: connecting with trends and business opportunities, learning from operating businesses, building networks and partnerships, and experiencing wellness products and services from diverse brands. Expert discussions covered decoding healing economy trends, creating modern health businesses, leveraging Thai wisdom and health-focused food, and forging strategic partnerships to develop products and tourism experiences for future markets. The event served as a platform linking people, businesses, and opportunities to build a strong healing economy ecosystem, transforming Thailand's assets into new travel value—measuring tourism success not by visitor numbers alone but by the sustainable value delivered to travelers, operators, communities, and the economy.
