Man Arrested for Planting Drugs in Rival's Car
A man has been arrested in Chiang Rai for planting methamphetamine in a rival's car as part of a years-long business feud, after the falsely accused driver was acquitted and filed a complaint exposing the frame-up.
Police Colonel Kiattisak Chitprasar, commander of Mae Chan Police Station in Chiang Rai, ordered officers to arrest a man on September 11 while he was digging near an abandoned building on the banks of the Sai River in Ban Koh Sai, Mae Sai subdistrict, Mae Sai district. He faces charges of attempting to frame another person for prosecution and possession of methamphetamine.
The case stems from a long-running business dispute that began in 2021 between the suspect and the father of his rival. When the rival's son was driving back to Chiang Rai city after conducting business in Mae Sai, officers stopped him at a checkpoint following an anonymous tip. Police found 400 methamphetamine tablets hidden under the vehicle. The son consistently denied the drugs were his and fought the charges in court.
During the legal proceedings, the son spent more than 60 days in custody. After he was eventually acquitted and released, he filed a complaint against the actual suspect. Investigators reviewed the evidence and concluded that an intentional frame-up had occurred. Authorities then reopened the case and arrested the man to restore justice for the victim. He is now in custody pending formal prosecution at Chiang Rai Provincial Court.
