Sacred Coin Market Reels as Prices Plummet After Monk Scandal
Sacred amulet prices in Udon Thani have crashed following a monk scandal, with previously million-baht coins now trading for tens of thousands of baht as collectors lose confidence.
The sacred amulet market in Udon Thani province remains reeling after a controversy involving Somchai Chothi, who was associated with consecrating the popular "Luang Pu coin" amulet, sparked widespread criticism and raised questions about market conditions.
Reporters visited the Ban Luem Amulet Club in Mueang district, Udon Thani, a well-known trading hub, to investigate pricing. Club chairman Bebe revealed that the scandal has severely impacted coin values. Previously, certain editions of the coins—particularly gold and silver versions—traded at millions of baht, but prices have now plummeted to tens of thousands depending on the material, condition, and individual details of each coin. Some trading continues at the lower price levels, with shops still buying at tens of thousands of baht, though collectors have not yet brought their coins to market.
When asked about the impact, Bebe reflected on the controversy. He noted that over 10 years ago, the respected monk traveled to Udon Thani and was associated with amulets connected to Jao Khun Luang Pu Chuang Ram Thep, earning deep devotion from collectors. However, Bebe acknowledged that the recent scandal and criticism have shaken his personal confidence and faith. As both a Buddhist and someone in the amulet community, he stated he has lost faith in the monk involved.
Bebe emphasized, however, that his respect and devotion toward Jao Khun Luang Pu Chuang Ram Thep himself remain unchanged and have not been affected by recent events.
