On September 29, 2026, heavy rains and prolonged flooding forced an emergency evacuation at Kong Pha Farm in Manorom district, Chainat province. The farm's ostriches, which suffered the worst impact, were completely submerged with no dry shelter remaining. Farm owner Prasert Kongkhun said the floods first entered the property on September 24, overwhelming initial repair efforts using sand reinforcement within just two days. Water levels now exceed those from the 2021 flood event, prompting urgent action to relocate 11 ostriches to higher ground before they become ill.
The evacuation was coordinated with Chainat provincial livestock officials and the animal quarantine checkpoint, who deployed equipment and staff to assist. Despite challenges due to the birds' large size and nervous temperament, temporary shelter was constructed using steel frames and wire mesh at a nearby vehicle parking area. The quarantine checkpoint also provided veterinary supplies to protect animal health. A simultaneous breeding facility housing rabbits remained safe due to elevated construction. Officials estimate flooding in the area will persist for another one to two weeks before conditions normalize.
