Officials Rescue Elderly Sisters Abused by Grandsons in Phatthalung
Officials in Phatthalung rescued two elderly sisters who had been locked up, beaten, and extorted for money by their grandsons. The 18‑year‑old grandson, known for drug use, opened the door after nearly an hour of negotiation. Both sisters were taken to hospital for treatment and the grandsons are undergoing drug screening and further assessment.
Phatthalung provincial officials, together with social welfare officers, police, and rescue teams, went to the Ban Raen community in Kusasawat sub-district, Mueang Phatthalung district, to assist two elderly sisters, 90-year-old Opchey and 85-year-old Yenjai, after receiving reports that they were being detained, physically abused, and extorted for money by their grandsons. Upon arrival, the house was locked from the inside; officials negotiated for nearly half an hour before the 18‑year‑old grandson—who has a history of drug use and repeatedly demanded thousands of baht from the women—opened the door. Inside, officers found the sisters and both grandsons, aged 18 and 24; the older grandson is reportedly undergoing psychiatric treatment. The sisters were taken to a safe location and later transported to Phatthalung Hospital for medical evaluation, while the grandsons underwent urine drug screening and were referred to relevant agencies for further treatment and assistance.
