Opposition Files Complaint Over Senate Election Fraud
The Democrat Party filed a complaint with Thailand's anti-corruption commission on September 25, alleging systematic fraud in the Senate election and calling for an investigation into the Election Commission's handling of the vote.
At 1:25 p.m. on September 25, 2026, at the National Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters, Srettha Thavisin, Democrat Party list MP and opposition leader, along with Prathep Wachrasinthu, deputy party leader, formally submitted a request to the commission to establish an investigation into the Election Commission's handling of the Senate election.
Thavisin stated that the alleged Senate fraud involves systematic wrongdoing and the complaint covers conduct before and during the voting process, including the issuance of rules and criteria that may have facilitated fraud. He emphasized the complaint encompasses all evidence presented by Democrat MPs and the public, as well as witness testimonies revealed through various platforms.
When asked whether the complaint targets specific Election Commission members given the 5-2 split vote, Thavisin said the Democrat Party cannot determine individual culpability, but noted that as an independent body responsible for transparent oversight, the commission's decision raises concerns. He stressed that the party is compiling all evidence for the anti-corruption body to investigate.
Regarding whether new evidence beyond previously disclosed information exists, Thavisin clarified that the complaint does not require conclusive proof of wrongdoing. Rather, it presents circumstances and evidence sufficient to warrant investigation into whether the Election Commission acted with integrity.
On confidence levels that the anti-corruption commission will launch an investigation, Thavisin acknowledged uncertainty but emphasized it is the commission's duty to accept the complaint and proceed. He also noted that Senate candidates directly harmed by alleged fraud could pursue legal action as victims in court as an alternative avenue for justice.
