Opposition Readies No-Confidence Motion Against Government
Thailand's opposition Democrats say they're ready to file a no-confidence motion against multiple government ministers next week, targeting officials based on conduct rather than party affiliation.
On September 22 at Parliament, Satit Wongnongtoe, a Democratic Party list MP and opposition deputy leader, said the party is 100 percent ready to debate a no-confidence motion. The opposition reached an agreement during meetings two to three weeks ago to form a working group to draft the motion, which will be completed next week. Satit said the motion will be presented to allied opposition parties for review before filing.
When asked whether targets would extend beyond Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Digital Economy Minister Chaichanok Chidchob, Satit indicated the party has identified additional officials. He said the opposition is not selecting based on party affiliation but rather evaluating conduct: "We are reviewing all of them. Simply put, we ignore the names and look at behavior. If the behavior fits the criteria, we debate it all."
Satit expressed concern about potential obstacles from the parliamentary leadership, recalling that during the Thaksin Shinawatra era when the Democratic Party was the main opposition, no-confidence motions were never an issue. He stressed that all proceedings must follow the constitution and law, and that motions must be grounded in clear evidence rather than fragmentary allegations.
Satit reiterated that the opposition will fulfill its role as the people's representative by scrutinizing ministers with serious governance failures. "We have prepared multiple detergents, and each packet is higher quality than Omo," he said, using a metaphor to describe the strength of their case. All debates must carry weight and be based on clear, credible information, he added.
