Ask a Phuket estate agent where the islands supply runs out first, and the answer is the northern end of Bang Tao Bay. Layan — the last, quietest stretch of the twelve-kilometre beach — sits pinned between the Sirinat national park headland, resort land held by Trisara and Anantara, and height limits that keep every new building below the tree line. There is, quite simply, nowhere left to sprawl.

On July 19, 2025, Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin thanked officers at Phu Khiao Wildlife Sanctuary and all partner agencies for their successful crackdown on illegal rosewood harvesting in the protected forest. Working with Huai Yang police in Chaiyaphum Province, authorities arrested a smuggling network operating between Thai and Vietnamese nationals, seizing contraband worth over 1 million baht. The minister has ordered prosecutors to oppose bail for the suspects, as previous cases show accused persons in such matters often exploit bail to escape prosecution.

According to Arthapol Charoenchantsaa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the operation took place from July 18–19, 2025. Officers arrested five individuals: Thai nationals Pramote (age 47, from Udon Thani) and Wickom (age 52, from Uthai Thani), and three Vietnamese nationals named Nguyen (ages 45, 37, and 49).

The seizure included two vehicles—a white Toyota Hilux and a black Isuzu TFR—104 kilograms of rosewood, five mobile phones, and enforcement equipment stored in three blue bags. Authorities charged the suspects with nine criminal offenses under environmental and wildlife protection laws, including unauthorized entry into a protected wildlife area, degradation of natural resources, illegal extraction of protected timber, and unauthorized processing of forest products. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is listed as the injured party in the prosecution.

On July 20, 2025, at the Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 hotel, opposition party leaders held a forum titled "Birth, Aging, Sickness, Corruption: How Can Thais Break This Cycle?" During a panel discussion on escaping systemic problems, Phakamon Nuntanatpong, opposition list MP and Pheu Thai Party spokesperson, highlighted the urgent need to overhaul the civil service examination system. She compared the ongoing exam corruption scandal to a compelling film whose ending remains uncertain—particularly whether those truly responsible will face justice.

Phakamon expressed deep concern that the investigation appears to be narrowing its scope to protect high-level figures, which could become the defining scandal that brings down the current government. She pointed out that local corruption in civil service exams occurs every year, with people paying bribes to secure positions. Those making payments are often influential local politicians seeking to "buy" specific exam scores to prevent answer changes or displacements of higher bidders.

She criticized the selective nature of the investigation, noting that only five officials from the Interior Ministry face serious disciplinary action and only three have been formally charged so far. Most troublingly, no government agency has yet requested a financial audit. She called on Interior Minister Anutin (the first Anutin) to contact Prime Minister Anutin (the second Anutin) to order the investigation, expressing frustration that when both figures share the same name and position, obstacles seem to multiply rather than disappear.

Meanwhile, opposition MP Wisut Tantinanthan discussed combating corruption through the Procurement Act 3.0, which aims to establish transparent government procurement rules and eliminate conflicts of interest. He identified problems in premium contractor schemes that create opportunities for cartels and government-to-government procurement without competitive bidding.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang gave Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin a formal reception in a warm atmosphere before they held full-scale talks to strengthen Thailand-China cooperation across all dimensions. On July 20, 2025, at 10:45 a.m. Beijing time at the North Hall on the first floor of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin participated in the formal reception ceremony and inspection of the honor guard during his official state visit to China. Upon arrival, the PM walked up the stairs past the honor guard, where Chinese Premier Li Qiang personally welcomed him with warm greetings, reflecting the friendship, trust, and strong relationship between the two nations. The two leaders then took a joint photograph before standing for both national anthems and participating in the honor guard inspection, which was conducted with dignity and elegance, emphasizing the mutual respect and importance of their partnership as close neighbors and key regional cooperators. During this visit, the two prime ministers held full-scale talks to advance cooperation in various areas of mutual benefit, witnessed the signing of agreements between Thailand and China, and attended a lunch reception hosted by the Chinese premier.

On July 20, 2025, the Samut Prakan Provincial Court handed down a verdict in the case of Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, who refused to participate in mandatory military conscription on April 5, 2024. The court determined that prosecution evidence was credible in proving the defendant failed to report for military service. The court rejected his constitutional defense based on religious beliefs, ruling that the Military Service Act does not violate the Constitution and that such beliefs do not constitute a legal exemption. Netiwit was found guilty under sections 27 and 45 of the Military Service Act. The court sentenced him to six months imprisonment but suspended the sentence for one year, given that he has no prior criminal record. No reporting requirement was imposed.

Beijing, 20 July 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) signed Letters of Intent with China Tourism Group, Utour Group, China Comfort Travel Group, Amap and TCP Group on 19 July, establishing cooperation across tour operations, smart travel, digital services, brand marketing and in-destination experiences. The signing took place during Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul’s official visit to China from 16 to 20 July.

The agreements represent a practical outcome of the Thailand–China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, which is expanding bilateral engagement in economic development, investment, digital technology, innovation and people-to-people exchange. They aim to strengthen traveller confidence, improve the visitor journey and support sustainable growth in Thailand’s quality tourism market.

Building on the stable implementation of mutual visa exemption, the initiative reinforces TAT’s long-term commitment to China as a key international market. Tourism continues to support cultural understanding, economic activity and enduring ties between the Thai and Chinese people.

Collaboration with Utour Group covers digital promotion of the Amazing Thailand brand, specialised products for leisure, wellness, honeymoons, weddings, study visits and cultural festivals, and wider distribution through travel agents, retail outlets, online travel agencies and social media.

TAT and China Comfort Travel Group will focus on destination promotion, new products, group travel, business events and special-interest segments. Additional areas include service and safety standards, tourism intelligence, industry training and access through the group’s nationwide network in China.

The Amap partnership will advance smart tourism through the Street Discovery Ranking, destination promotion and Thai–Chinese travel information services. These initiatives will improve convenience for Chinese independent travellers and strengthen TAT’s reach among quality visitor segments.

Under the Energetic Thailand concept, TAT and TCP Group will develop experiences linked to sport, music, health and lifestyle. TCP’s brand and communications network will support destination awareness, business events, workforce development and wider economic value for Thailand.
