A woman known as 'Nong Nam' has admitted she misled a subdistrict administrator identified as 'Khun Tae' after a two-month acquaintance, convincing him to transfer approximately 500,000 baht in dowry and other payments. The woman later revealed she had been legally married to a naval officer just one month before meeting Khun Tae, though she claimed they had separated. When confronted on a local television programme about the missing funds, she stated she had spent the money on living expenses and purchases made during their relationship and insisted on repaying only half.

After the broadcast, Nong Nam agreed to repay 350,000 baht, with her parents initially offering 100,000 baht in cash plus gold when she failed to appear at a scheduled hotel meeting on August 19. Her parents requested three additional days to sell cattle and gather the remaining funds, citing their daughter's severe stress. Khun Tae rejected the offer and filed a police complaint. Nong Nam stated she does not know where to find the full amount, as the money has already been spent, and said Khun Tae is welcome to pursue legal action against her.

Government Spokesman Challenges Critics to Present Evidence on TH-AI Passport

Deputy Government Spokesman Lalida Perischvivatch challenged opposition critics to produce concrete evidence supporting allegations that the Ministry of Digital Economy orchestrated information operations to promote the TH-AI Passport project. Responding to MP Raksachon Srinok's accusations, Lalida argued that suspicion and fact are not the same, and that claims involving state agencies must meet clear evidentiary standards. The government remains open to scrutiny but insists that all parties be held to the same investigative standards.

Government Spokesman Challenges Critics to Present Evidence on TH-AI Passport
38 min ago Khaosod

Deputy Government Spokesman Lalida Perischvivatch responded to accusations by opposition MP Raksachon Srinok regarding the TH-AI Passport project on August 20, 2025. Srinok had raised concerns about online social media accounts showing support for the AiPASS initiative, suggesting they could be information operations linked to the Ministry of Digital Economy for Society. Lalida stated that while raising questions about government operations is a legitimate right, suspicion must be distinguished from fact, and any accusations involving state agencies require clear evidence.

Lalida explained that while newly created accounts with no posts or coordinated comments can warrant further investigation, such observations alone are insufficient to conclude the accounts are information operations or to accuse a government ministry of orchestrating them. She emphasized that those making such accusations must prove who owns the accounts, who ordered or hired them, which budget or resources were used, and provide direct evidence linking the accounts to state agencies.

Lalida challenged critics to produce documented proof—including orders, employment contracts, budget disbursements, coordination channels, or any evidence directly linking the accounts to commanding officers—if they believe the ministry was truly involved. She stressed that without such evidence, what exists is suspicion, not fact, and conclusions should not leap from observation to accusation.

Lalida criticized what she called a double standard in scrutiny. She noted that opposition critics demand the government present evidence before accusing anyone, yet apply a different standard when making accusations themselves. "Drawing conclusions beyond available evidence is not rigorous oversight, but applying two standards: demanding proof from the government while accepting screenshots as conclusions when accusing the state," she said.

The spokesman confirmed that the government welcomes full scrutiny of the TH-AI Passport program, including its operations, budget use, and public outcomes. However, she insisted that scrutiny must follow the same standards for all parties, particularly when allegations involve government authority or resources.

Lalida stated that the government is not afraid of investigation and acknowledged the opposition's duty to oversee the government, just as the government has a duty to answer questions. But good oversight, she argued, should not begin by assuming guilt and forcing others to prove innocence. "If you truly believe information operations exist, investigate thoroughly to the commanding officer, employer, and funding source, then present the evidence to society. At that point, the government will be ready to take responsibility for the facts. But until then, call it what it is: suspicion, not fact," she concluded.

A 15-year-old student was hospitalized after overdosing on antidepressant medication, revealing she had been sexually abused for seven years by a 71-year-old man, her grandmother's brother, who worked as a groundskeeper at a school. The girl became distressed at school and confided in her teacher, who immediately took her to the hospital. Medical staff noted her symptoms of dizziness, confusion, and weakness, and upon questioning, she disclosed the abuse that had begun when she was 8 years old and intensified recently when the suspect moved into her home full-time.

Don Muang Police arrested the 71-year-old suspect and are pursuing charges. The Paveena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women intervened to locate the girl's mother, who had been separated from her family and was unemployed. The foundation has provided financial assistance and taken both mother and daughter into their care, planning to support the girl's continued education and medical treatment while helping the mother find employment.

As the girl's mental condition improved during hospitalization, she wrote an account of the abuse on paper to provide to police as an initial statement. The foundation coordinated with her mother to file a formal complaint, and the mother confirmed her intention to pursue the case fully. Police have remanded the suspect in custody pending court proceedings and opposed bail, with a multidisciplinary assessment interview scheduled for later.

Deputy Prime Minister Yuthasak Wangsuladee, appointed as incident commander by the Prime Minister, announced the unified command center approach to manage flooding in Nan province on August 20, 2569. He emphasized streamlined budget approval processes for affected areas and direct reporting channels to accelerate relief delivery to flood victims. The command center has assessed conditions hourly since 9 a.m., coordinating personnel and resources across all affected zones with input from all provincial sectors, local government organizations, and multiple ministries.

Relief measures are divided into two clear payment systems: emergency welfare funds from provincial reserves for clothing, bedding, and kitchen supplies reported through village administration, and special flood relief compensation currently being surveyed for submission to the disaster prevention agency. Yuthasak praised the coordinated effort involving current and former parliament members and local organizations, noting that past year lessons were applied to close identified gaps this year.

Governor Chainarong Wongying outlined a two-zone operational strategy: the upper districts of Pua and Tha Wang Pha are prioritized for cleanup and restoration, with water levels already receding and recovery expected within two days including centralized kitchen services. The central and southern districts of Phu Phiang, Muang, and Wieng Sa face rising water volumes and have been placed on alert with evacuation shelters and advance warnings to residents. The command center has established a 24-hour hotline at 054-716-174 for complaints, food requests, and emergency assistance.

Pradpraan Appointed New Sports Authority Chief

The Sports Authority of Thailand has selected Pradpraan Samamnit as its new director to replace Dr. Kongsakd Yodmany when his term ends on September 30. Senior sports officials praised her appointment as highly suitable given her extensive experience and seniority within the organization. The incoming director will inherit several ongoing challenges, including resolving budget allocation procedures for sports federations, which officials confirmed can be adjusted flexibly based on sports performance.

The Sports Authority of Thailand board held its fifth meeting of 2025 on August 19 and voted to appoint Pradpraan Samamnit, a deputy director overseeing professional and boxing sports, as the new director to replace Dr. Kongsakd Yodmany, whose term expires September 30. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will recommend her to the cabinet in early September.

Pimol Srivikrom, chairman of the Thai Olympic Committee, expressed strong congratulations, calling Pradpraan a highly suitable choice. He noted her long tenure as deputy director, comprehensive knowledge of all Sports Authority operations, and experience leading multiple departments. "I have worked with her and know she is skilled and capable. The Sports Authority's mission is demanding, so we must provide support and stand ready to cooperate fully from the Olympic Committee side," he said.

Budget allocation for sports federations remains a significant issue. The National Sports Development Fund has issued allocation criteria for different federation grades. Pimol stated he has discussed this with Deputy Prime Minister Somsakd Thongsri, who oversees sports policy, and Sports Minister Surasak Pancharerngvagul. Both confirmed the guidelines are provisional estimates with flexibility to exceed if circumstances warrant.

Outgoing director Dr. Kongsakd Yodmany congratulated Pradpraan, highlighting her seniority as the longest-serving deputy director with diverse experience across professional sports, boxing, strategy, information technology, and sports promotion. "I must ask her to continue several important matters, especially revising regulations related to National Sports Development Fund budgeting, coordination between the Sports Authority and the fund office, and public-private partnerships for stadium development," he said. He stressed that budget criteria for sports federations are provisional estimates under review, incorporating performance metrics from Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and Olympic potential assessments. "These figures are not final and allow for flexibility," he concluded.

Thai Savings Bank Adds 50 Billion Baht for EV Loans, Solar Schemes

Thai Savings Bank has increased its electric vehicle loan programme to 100 billion baht after the initial 50 billion baht tranche was fully allocated. The bank and Government Housing Bank are also launching low-interest solar panel installation loans, with over 1,000 customers already approved in the past month and government subsidies covering installation costs. Installation payback periods are estimated at around seven years for qualifying homes, after which solar panels generate income for their 20–25 year lifespan.

Thai Savings Bank Adds 50 Billion Baht for EV Loans, Solar Schemes
50 min ago Khaosod

Thai Savings Bank director Songpol Cheevapaññarojn announced strong uptake of the government's energy transition initiatives. The bank's first tranche of 50 billion baht in electric vehicle loans has been fully disbursed, prompting the bank to approve an additional 50 billion baht to meet ongoing demand. "EV loan demand has been excellent," Songpol said. "The initial 50 billion baht allocation is exhausted, and we've added another 50 billion baht. If that is fully utilized, we can consider further increases." The Thai Savings Bank and Government Housing Bank will lead solar panel installation financing. Over 1,000 customers have requested solar installation loans in the past month. Under the new solar programme, the government will cover installation subsidies while banks provide low-interest credit. "The exact interest rate hasn't been finalized, but it will definitely be affordable," Songpol said. He noted that solar installation is an investment requiring careful evaluation. The most suitable candidates are homes using at least 50 percent of their electricity during daylight hours with roofs facing the right direction and free from building shadows. "Equipment prices have fallen significantly. For qualifying households, payback should take about seven years, while solar panels last 20–25 years, making the remaining period essentially income generation and expense reduction." In the first eight months of the year, the Thai Savings Bank reported continuous profitability and loan growth across all segments. Soft loans with a 1 trillion baht ceiling have seen 500 billion baht approved and disbursed. The EV loan programme's first phase of 50 billion baht was so popular that the bank authorized an additional 50 billion baht. Supply chain and clean energy financing expanded significantly from the previous year, with over a thousand requests for energy transition credit. The bank's non-performing loan ratio remains below 4 percent and continues declining, reflecting improved repayment behaviour among small customers. The bank's net interest margin stands at 1.7–1.9 percent, the lowest among all commercial banks in the system, as it has cut lending rates to assist borrowers and raised deposit rates to support savers.

Artist Takes Legal Action Against Copycat Coco Shop

Pithaya, owner of the legendary coco drink shop, is taking legal action against a rival shop accused of copying her brand's design, colors, fonts, and menu. She clarified the dispute is not about preventing others from selling coco drinks, but about intellectual property infringement and brand identity theft. The incident has sparked broader awareness about intellectual property rights in southern Thailand.

Artist Takes Legal Action Against Copycat Coco Shop
56 min ago Khaosod

Pithaya, owner of the legendary coco drink shop, spoke out after another shop allegedly copied her brand's color scheme, fonts, menu, and overall design, confusing customers. She clarified that the dispute is not about preventing others from selling coco drinks—anyone can do that—but about the intentional violation of intellectual property rights and the unauthorized use of her brand identity. She revealed she has consulted with lawyers and taken legal action, expressing heartfelt disappointment that the brand she and her team built has been diminished. When asked about criticism from southern influencers, she requested to let society judge and declined further comment.

Pithaya explained that her coco shop started as a student business at Kasetsart University, evolving over time into the legendary brand it is today. This was her first time participating in an agricultural fair in the southern region at Songkhla Nakarin University. She emphasized that the copying is evident from the outset—the colors, fonts, and overall design clearly show intentional replication. She distinguished between selling coco drinks, which anyone can do, and copying the creative concept that makes people recognize it as her shop. The core issue, she stressed, is intellectual property violation and brand identity theft.

Pithaya acknowledged seeing many people replicate her ideas but chose not to pursue legal action, preferring to focus on her own brand. However, this incident deeply upset her, especially when misinformed comments spread on social media. She expressed gratitude to customers and the community for their understanding of the issue. She noted that this situation has raised awareness about intellectual property rights, describing it as a sensitive matter that deserves legal protection. She emphasized that the primary concern is not legal action itself, but the emotional and moral value of her creation being diluted.

She stressed that her shop is not just her individual effort—she employs students to provide them with income, and has never cut their wages or kept all profits for herself. Since the agricultural fair days until now, she has reinvested all shop earnings into development rather than personal gain. The main hurt, she explained, is that something she created and nurtured has been easily devalued through what amounts to intellectual property infringement.

The Chiang Mai University Science Park (STeP) is driving policy innovation to elevate agricultural and food value chains in the Northern Economic Corridor (NEC) toward integration into global value chains. The park held a workshop on August 20, 2026, at its northern facility in Chiang Mai, bringing together government agencies, private businesses, educational institutions, and local entrepreneurs to analyse problems, design solutions, and establish workable policy measures.

General Manager Nueng Pichat Intrawut opened the meeting and explained the project's objectives. Director Associate Professor Pitivatana Wattanchai later closed the proceedings and outlined next steps, aiming to build consensus on implementation direction and incorporate stakeholder input into the policy design process.

The workshop used participatory methods to reflect real-world conditions and constraints in the region. Presenters shared research findings on the agricultural and food value chain situation in the NEC, along with gap analysis results comparing agricultural demand from industry against local production capacity. Participants from all sectors reviewed and validated these findings based on their perspectives and experience.

Working groups conducted root cause analysis using Causal Layered Analysis tools and designed transformation approaches and action plans. Discussions focused on problem-solving, prioritising urgent factors, and crafting policies suited to local context. After group presentations and feedback, participants refined recommendations to ensure alignment with actual conditions before finalising priority measures.
