Reform Advocates Sue to Restore Social Insurance Board Elections

Thai Social Insurance reform advocates sued to force elections scheduled for September 27, 2025, after the election commission indefinitely postponed balloting despite 70 percent of procedures being complete.

Reform Advocates Sue to Restore Social Insurance Board Elections
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, 2025, the Thai Social Insurance Reform Team, led by Sathsathum Thammabusadee, filed suit at the Central Administrative Court to annul the postponement of Social Insurance Board elections and to order the elections proceed as originally scheduled on September 27, 2025, with voting open to all eligible members without mandatory advance registration.

Thammabusadee argued that the administrative court's ruling only suspended the advance registration requirement, not the entire election process. However, the Social Insurance Election Commission has stalled all proceedings, which he characterizes as acting beyond the court's mandate and misusing the court order as a pretext to obstruct insurance reform.

He suggested that the indefinite postponement may reflect political strategy by power networks within the Labor Ministry attempting to delay restoration of members' authority. The previous board's term expired in February, yet delays have left the fund adrift for over five months without active leadership—an abnormal state, as balloting should have occurred in May and a new board should already be in place. Despite 70 percent of election procedures already completed, only the ballot casting remains, yet the commission continues to exceed its authority.

The reform team called on Labor Minister Julapan Amornwivat to proceed with elections as scheduled if he genuinely intends to reform the insurance system as promised, and to prevent the old power faction from distorting information. They emphasized that the Social Insurance Office possesses sufficient budget, personnel, and readiness to conduct the September 27 election as planned, thereby restoring democratic process to the fund and reassuring over 10 million members.

Police Officer Accused Of Coercing Sex Videos, Selling To Underground Groups

A Songkhla police officer is accused of coercing more than 20 women into filming explicit videos sold to underground groups, with victims alleging he had backing from superiors and threatened them to withdraw complaints.

Police Officer Accused Of Coercing Sex Videos, Selling To Underground Groups
5 Aug Khaosod

On August 5, 2569, a group of female victims brought evidence to seek help from Colonel Dr. Thanakrit Chitaririyarat, chairman of the Thanakrit Law Group, after alleging a police officer from the investigation unit in Songkhla province threatened and forced them to film explicit videos sold to underground groups. The victims claim the officer had backing from his superiors, with more than 20 people affected.

One victim, identified as Ms. A, an ex-girlfriend of the officer, revealed she was forced into a two-year relationship after being secretly filmed. Throughout their time together, she was filmed during intimate moments, which she tried to delete. When she accessed the officer's phone, she discovered he frequently filmed women. On May 31, the officer was involved in a car accident where approximately 10 mobile phones and various drugs including methamphetamine and crystal methamphetamine spilled out. Ms. A managed to retrieve one phone, which contained explicit videos of numerous women, with the youngest victim being only 4 years old. She then traced all the victims in the footage before filing a report on June 2.

According to Ms. A, the police station opened an investigation on June 4 and reassigned the officer to Songkhla Provincial Police for only three days before he returned to his original position. She claims he has threatened victims to withdraw their complaints, warning he would take action against their homes, and he continues performing his duties normally.

Coordinator Chanthath Rinnapakonn revealed that in one case involving a 14-year-old victim, the officer allegedly raided her home during a drug investigation into her brother. Finding nothing illegal, he allegedly threatened the victim that unless she consented to sexual abuse and filming, both her brother and mother would face charges.

Colonel Dr. Thanakrit Chitaririyarat stated that all victims have filed reports, but the case has made no progress. The phone retrieved contains multiple secret chat groups with numerous explicit videos offered for sale at varying prices. He plans to take the victims to the Technology Crime Investigation Bureau for prosecution and to the Justice Ministry for witness protection. He has also petitioned the National Police Commander to issue an order dismissing the officer from service, as any investigation or transfer would not address the gravity of the crimes.

Lightning strike kills footballer during tournament in NarathiwatLegacyA footballer was killed and eight others injured after lightning struck during the Golok FA Cup 2026 semi-final at the Santipap Stadium in Su-ngai Golok district, Narathiwat, yesterday, August 4. The incident occurred during injury time as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds swept across the area. Lightning struck the pitch while the match was still in progress. One of the players, 24 year old Sofwan Awae, suffered critical injuries and later died. Eight other players were also injured in the incident. Photo via FC Yala Sofwan was a former Pattani FC player who had recently signed with FC Yala. Following news of his death, FC Yala shared a message on social media expressing sympathy to his family. The club wrote: “إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ We extend our condolences to the family of our new FC Yala player, Sofwan Awae.” Football fans and social media users also expressed their condolences following the tragedy. The Golok FA Cup 2026 is a local football tournament featuring teams from Thailand’s southern border provinces as well as clubs from Malaysia.

In a similar incident, a lightning strike killed a caddy working during a rainstorm at a Bangkok golf course, as players continued their game despite the weather. The tragedy raised concerns over player and staff safety at golf courses during storms. Many social media users questioned why play had continued in such dangerous conditions, pointing to a culture of pressure that often prevents caddies from making safety calls. In another incident, a Thai woman was struck by lightning while hiking on Doi Pui Luang mountain in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, causing her to lose consciousness and sustain burns across her body. She was successfully taken to a hospital for treatment. The story Lightning strike kills footballer during tournament in Narathiwat as seen on Thaiger News.

Thai FM Urges Chinese Envoy to Ease Airport Tensions
5 Aug Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Siwarak Phuangketu spoke on August 5, 2569 at Government House about the disruption at Suvarnabhumi Airport after more than 20 Chinese tourists were denied boarding, with reports of alleged discriminatory behavior by Thai airport staff. He said the primary responsibility lies with the Ministry of Transport, but emphasized the need to welcome visitors and provide smooth procedures while adhering to immigration rules.

When asked whether understanding must be built between Chinese tourists and officials, particularly to help tourists understand Thai systems and regulations, Siwarak noted this is the responsibility of the Chinese ambassador in Thailand, as similar incidents have occurred among Thai citizens before.

He said he had previously told the Chinese ambassador that this is a sensitive matter requiring clarification—not simply defending Chinese interests, but fostering mutual understanding. Since the ambassador serves in Thailand, his primary duty is to promote bilateral relations and goodwill between peoples. The foreign minister stressed that the ambassador's statements must reflect this diplomatic responsibility without amplifying tensions, just as Thai ambassadors in China must maintain positive relations.

Wildlife Sanctuary Closes After Ranger Killed by Tiger

A ranger was killed by an Indochinese tiger at Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani Province, prompting the facility to close temporarily while officials review camera-trap footage to identify the animal responsible.

Wildlife Sanctuary Closes After Ranger Killed by Tiger
5 Aug Khaosod

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani Province has closed temporarily following the fatal attack on ranger Sakhrin Wichachart near Thabselao Stream. Evidence including drag marks, bite wounds on the corpse, and fresh tiger paw prints found nearby suggests an Indochinese tiger was responsible, though officials have not yet confirmed which individual tiger was involved. A research team from Khao Nang Ram Wildlife Research Station is reviewing camera-trap footage to track the tiger's behavior.

Wildlife officials note that tigers typically do not approach work areas or attack people. When tigers venture near communities, they are often elderly or injured animals unable to hunt naturally. However, detailed investigation is ongoing.

The sanctuary has implemented five protective measures: temporary closure to tourism; warnings to staff to avoid high-risk areas with increased vigilance around offices and ranger posts; installation of additional lighting in vulnerable zones; community engagement and public awareness campaigns; and formal reporting to supervisors for further support.

According to recent surveys, Indochinese tigers are distributed across 26 protected areas in Thailand within five forest complexes. Camera-trap data identifies 210 individual tigers. The Western Forest Complex holds the majority, with Huai Kha Khaeng alone accounting for 100 tigers, followed by Thung Yai Naresuan with 15 tigers on the western side and 25 on the eastern side.

Police Quick Thinking Saves Man in Severe Allergic Reaction

An out-of-province driver in severe allergic shock stopped at a police station seeking help on August 5, and officers' quick assessment and call for emergency responders likely saved his life before he could drive further.

Police Quick Thinking Saves Man in Severe Allergic Reaction
5 Aug Khaosod

A food allergy is no trivial matter. A man experiencing an allergic reaction stopped at a police station thinking medical help was available, and alert officers quickly called emergency responders, saving him from anaphylaxis.

On August 5, 2025, a Facebook user named Pratak Tiemsai posted an account describing how allergies can be unpredictable and serious. While on duty, an out-of-province driver suddenly arrived complaining of full-body rashes, red skin, and cold hands, unfamiliar with the area. Seeing the police station sign, he stopped thinking a doctor was available.

The officer informed him there was no doctor on site and recommended nearby private and government hospitals, but the man had no health insurance and his medical rights were registered in another province.

When asked further, he explained that the allergic reaction started about two hours after eating. He had already taken two CPM 2mg tablets plus calamine lotion without improvement. Initial assessment showed widespread swollen red rashes, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, and dizziness.

The officers suspected anaphylaxis rather than a simple allergic reaction and immediately called for emergency medical assistance.

When rescue personnel arrived, they measured oxygen saturation at 93-94%, blood pressure at 88-61, and heart rate at 145. After applying oxygen via cannula at 3 liters per minute and elevating his legs, oxygen improved to 97%, blood pressure rose to 145-88, and heart rate decreased to 110.

Meanwhile, an advanced life support unit was called. Upon arrival, they administered antihistamine medication and intravenous fluids, monitored vital signs, and improved oxygen levels to 98-99% before transferring him to hospital. The post credited quick thinking by the officers who asked detailed questions rather than allowing him to drive himself, and thanked the rescue team and Erawaan rescue center.

Mechanic Nearly Took Own Life in Five-Body Murder Case
5 Aug Khaosod

CHONBURI — A motorcycle mechanic who became a key witness in the investigation into the alleged five-body murder case involving suspect "Pong" said he nearly took his own life after facing intense pressure and public suspicion that he had helped the accused.

Speaking publicly for the first time on August 4, 2026, the 43-year-old mechanic, known as "Neng", said he was the person heard in an audio clip providing police with information about a motorcycle linked to two missing Russian siblings. Neng said he saw another suspect, Thong, dismantling a motorcycle near an old cemetery in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung district, on July 26, 2026. When Russian residents later posted missing-person notices featuring the siblings and their motorcycle, he recognised the vehicle immediately and contacted Huai Yai police.

He insisted he had acted in good faith and had cooperated fully with investigators from the beginning. Neng said Thong had worked for him making charcoal, while Pong had stayed at his property for nearly two months after being released from prison in June. He claimed Pong had appeared to behave normally and had helped with household chores, but later learned that Pong allegedly carried a handgun regularly and used the same weapon in the murders of the Russian siblings and a Thai family of three.

The mechanic said Pong and Thong had also stolen his red Honda Scoopy motorcycle, which was allegedly used during the crimes and later during their escape. Neng said the emotional toll had been overwhelming. He described himself as having "raised a cobra" by giving Pong shelter and said he had been unable to eat or sleep because of the investigation and rumours circulating in the community.

"I almost put a gun to my temple and ended my life," he said, adding that a phone call and the arrival of police officers at his house stopped him from pulling the trigger. He denied any involvement in the killings and said he wanted to clear his name, stressing that he was the one who provided police with crucial information that helped advance the investigation.

Neng also defended Huai Yai police, saying officers had worked tirelessly and successfully solved the case. He said Pong deserved the harshest possible punishment for the alleged murders. Authorities have not accused Neng of involvement in the killings, and the investigation remains ongoing.
