Six Stages of Liver Disease: Symptoms and Prevention
25 Jul Khaosod

Health educators explain the six levels of liver disease severity and what you should know to start caring for your liver. Common causes include chronic alcohol consumption, obesity or insulin resistance, and hepatitis B and C viruses.

Level 1 – Healthy Liver: Liver cells are organized in neat hexagonal zones with good blood flow and no abnormalities.

Level 2 – Fatty Liver (Hepatic Steatosis): Alcohol, obesity, or insulin resistance triggers fat buildup in liver cells faster than it can be exported. No symptoms appear, but blood tests may show slightly elevated liver enzymes as cells begin to sustain damage.

Level 3 – Fatty Liver Inflammation (Steatohepatitis): Accumulated fat, particularly fatty acids, disrupts cellular sensors and triggers inflammation. White blood cells are recruited and widespread liver inflammation develops. Symptoms include abdominal pain, yellowing of skin and eyes, and significantly elevated liver enzymes.

Level 4 – Liver Fibrosis: Chronic damage from fat and alcohol destroys the normal hexagonal structure, replacing it with abnormally grown tissue (regenerative nodules) interspersed with scar tissue that distorts blood vessels. Liver enzymes may only slightly elevate and symptoms may be absent.

Level 5 – Cirrhosis: Prolonged damage fills the entire liver with abnormal tissue and widespread scarring, destroying the normal structure and severely impairing blood flow. Symptoms include yellowing of skin and eyes, abdominal swelling, spider rashes, and red palms; almost all liver blood markers become abnormal.

Level 6 – Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma): Chronically damaged liver cells suffer DNA mutations and lose control over cell division. Hepatitis virus-induced damage triggers immune cells (NK cells and CD8+ T cells) to attack the liver, which may progress similarly through levels 4-5-6 if untreated.

Protect your liver by reducing alcohol, controlling diet, losing weight, and exercising regularly. If infected with hepatitis B or C, get regular check-ups.

Land Agency Says Only 3 Khao Kradong Cases, Cannot Revoke All Titles

The Department of Land says it can only revoke titles in three court-decided cases and cannot invalidate all deeds for the disputed Khao Kradong land in Buriram, claiming each plot's ownership must be separately litigated.

Land Agency Says Only 3 Khao Kradong Cases, Cannot Revoke All Titles
25 Jul Khaosod

The Department of Land issued a statement on July 25, 2569, responding to reports that Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Democratic Party leader and list-system MP, called for a review of the Khao Kradong land dispute. The party is preparing to petition the Interior Minister, arguing the government has not complied with an administrative court ruling that found the disputed land belongs to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), and vowing to monitor the situation closely.

The Khao Kradong land dispute in Semet and Isaan subdistricts, Mueang Buriram district, Buriram province, has attracted sustained public and media attention, with various viewpoints raised about the Department of Land's handling. The Department has repeatedly clarified the facts, legal points, procedures, and outcomes, and says it has strictly followed all applicable laws, court verdicts and orders, and relevant administrative review processes while protecting both state and public rights and ensuring fairness to all stakeholders. However, because misleading information continues to circulate about the facts, the Department's jurisdiction, and its actions, the agency released a detailed summary:

1. Regarding cases in which the Department of Land and its director are bound by Supreme Court, Court of Appeals Region 3, and Central Administrative Court rulings that the disputed land belongs to the SRT:

1.1 Three civil cases—Supreme Court verdicts 842–876/2560, 8027/2561, and Court of Appeals Region 3 verdict 1112/2563—involve disputes over rights under the Civil and Commercial Code between plaintiffs and defendants. The Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Region 3 verdicts are binding only on the specific plots that villagers and the SRT litigated in those three cases alone. The Department of Land has fully implemented these verdicts, but cannot revoke title deeds for other plots because, although the verdicts show ownership under Section 145 Paragraph 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure and bind outsiders, they are only an initial presumption. Ordinary persons outside the case may defend their rights in civil litigation, so people must be given the chance to litigate and prove their superior rights. These verdicts cannot bind outsiders without new litigation against the relevant parties under Section 145 Paragraph 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure. The Supreme and Appeals courts did not rule on the entire 5,083-rai area, so claiming the verdict confirms ownership of all the land exceeds the verdict's scope. The SRT cannot apply the results of the three cases to other plots because each plot's acquisition history differs; villagers as owners must have a chance to defend their rights. The SRT's claim that the Department must revoke title deeds for the entire disputed area is therefore legally unfounded.

25 Jul Khaosod

At 12:57 a.m. on July 25, Nakhon Ratchasima rescue units responded to a shooting incident on Soi Thao Surath 15 in Muang District, where a group of teenagers on motorcycles armed with swords were being chased and shot at by occupants of a white sedan wielding a homemade shotgun. A 17-year-old passenger on one of the motorcycles was struck by seven rounds of gunfire to the back and fell onto the road near a wastewater treatment facility. Emergency responders attempted to revive him with chest compressions, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation began when the white sedan pursued the motorcycle group, which had been making noise throughout the night. The shooter fired at point-blank range once they caught up with the riders. Friends of the victim fled on their motorcycles, while the sedan also escaped. One of the victim's friends returned to the scene and called his parents to inform them of his death.

When the boy's parents arrived and saw their son's body, his mother collapsed to her knees in tears, crying that she had warned him not to leave home and questioning why he had to die this way. Police are investigating the incident as an urgent matter linked to a social media dispute among teenagers living in the city. Authorities are pursuing multiple suspects for assault and murder charges.

Politician Calls for Land Bridge Project Cancellation

A Democratic Party MP calls for cancellation of the Land Bridge project linking the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, after a government committee found it economically unfeasible and a fiscal burden, proposing instead to invest in southern

Politician Calls for Land Bridge Project Cancellation
25 Jul Khaosod

On July 25, Chaiachana Detchdecho, a Democratic Party list MP and deputy southern regional chief, responded after Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithadprasap announced the findings of a committee studying the Land Bridge project—a transport infrastructure initiative to link shipping between the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. The committee determined the project has low feasibility, risks burdening the national budget, and carries considerable risk.

Chaiachana thanked the committee for its comprehensive analysis and for reflecting the reality that the Land Bridge is an uneconomical investment for the country. He called on the government and cabinet to seriously consider the committee's findings when deliberating the matter in cabinet meetings.

"When the study clearly shows the project carries high risk and poor economic returns, the government should listen to expert voices and public opinion, and should not proceed with a project that may burden the nation's budget in the future," Chaiachana said.

He proposed redirecting the Land Bridge budget to develop southern rail infrastructure by accelerating rail connections to major southern ports—Padang Besar, Kantang, and Ranong—and expanding rail links to ports nationwide to boost logistics capacity, reduce transport costs, and strengthen national competitiveness.

Chaiachana also proposed developing Thungsong District in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a regional cargo distribution and inland container depot hub, similar to Ladkrabang, to efficiently link rail, road, and maritime transport.

"Future large government projects must be based on careful analysis, economic value, and public input," Chaiachana said. "We must thank the committee for listening to the people and urge the government to do the same, because every baht is public tax money that must deliver maximum benefit."

On July 24, Col. Withaya Sarinya, commander of Ranger Group 45, reported that a junior ranger officer at Company 4511's base in Samao village, Bongo subdistrict, Rangae district, Narathiwat, took his own life in his quarters. Officers found the 49-year-old deputy company commander with a gunshot wound beneath his chin. A 5.56-millimeter rifle and one spent cartridge casing were found near his body.

Investigators determined the death resulted from severe, long-term depression unrelated to stress from recent militant attacks that killed five ranger soldiers. The officer had served with Ranger Group 45 for over 20 years, starting as a volunteer and rising to commissioned rank. A native of Surat Thani, he had married a woman from Yala and fathered two children. He had been receiving continuous treatment for depression for more than ten years.

The officer's remains are held at Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital. Relatives plan to collect his body on Sunday, July 26, 2025, to conduct funeral rites according to custom in Yala Province.
