Skeletal Remains Found in Foreclosed House in Chiang Mai
Skeletal remains discovered on a bed in an abandoned Chiang Mai house are believed to belong to a 93-year-old woman missing for five to six years. Authorities are conducting an autopsy to confirm the identity and cause of death.
A prospective buyer inspecting a foreclosed house in Chiang Mai received a shocking discovery when opening a mosquito net over the bed. The skeletal remains lay on the mattress. Neighbors explained the house had been abandoned for 5-6 years, revealing why suspicion never arose.
Mae Ping Police reported that on September 15 at 5 p.m., they were notified of human skeletal remains inside an abandoned two-story wooden house numbered 96 near a community market in Sanphisai subdistrict, Muang district, Chiang Mai. Officers, the village headman, and a forensic doctor from Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital responded. The house had been vacant for years and previously housed a shop. Inside lay scattered belongings of the original owner.
On the ground floor, officers found wooden chairs and a bed with a mosquito net. When opened, a skeleton was visible on the bed. Authorities collected evidence and sent the remains for detailed autopsy to confirm identity and establish cause of death, then planned to notify relatives.
Neighbors identified the house as belonging to Sriwan (surname withheld), who lived there with her son, nicknamed Tee. Neighbors last saw both around 5-6 years ago. Subsequently, the bank seized the property, and word circulated that Sriwan had moved to live with her son and relatives in central Chiang Mai, so neighbors felt no reason to suspect anything amiss. Police discovered Sriwan's son, her former housemate, is currently imprisoned in Tak province. Sriwan was 93 years old at the time.
Authorities tentatively believe the skeleton may be Sriwan, but await autopsy results and identity verification for formal confirmation. If confirmed, it would mean Sriwan may have died alone inside the house over the past 5-6 years.
Neighbors said they never suspected anyone had died inside, nor detected any unusual odors indicating a body. Only 2-3 days prior did a foul stench begin emanating from the house, but its source remained unidentified. When a prospective buyer recently visited to inspect the property before purchase, the skeleton was discovered, shocking the neighborhood.
