Thais Love Fabric Softener, P&G Bets 100M Baht on Downy Luxury
Thais use more fabric softener than almost anywhere globally, consuming 70 milliliters per wash—nearly double the international average—prompting P&G to invest 100 million baht launching Downy Lux, a concentrated formula targeting busy work
P&G's Downy fabric softener brand has disclosed that Thais rank in the world's top three for fabric softener usage and is aggressively pursuing market expansion with a 100 million baht investment. The company has appointed actress Ling Ling Kong as its new brand ambassador and unveiled Downy Lux, a concentrated formula featuring a sunny-fresh scent to capture additional market share and maintain its leadership position.
Pennyada Phuchitvattananon, senior marketing manager for Downy, revealed that the fabric softener market is growing at a steady average rate of 7 percent annually, with the market value expected to reach 19 billion baht by the end of 2026. Despite economic slowdown and reduced purchasing power, the market has remained resilient as fabric softener is considered an essential household product.
Thai consumer usage of fabric softener stands at 86 percent, placing the country in the world's top three for the past three consecutive years and ranking first across Southeast Asia—exceeding the Philippines' 84 percent and Vietnam's 58 percent. Thais have developed a strong preference for fragrance, which affects their perception of personal image and confidence, leading to significantly higher usage rates. Thai consumers average 70 milliliters per wash, the highest globally compared to 30–50 milliliters in other countries. Consumer behavior has also shifted from buying small 20-milliliter sachets to larger refill packs of 100 and 470 milliliters, with 450-milliliter sizes currently the best sellers.
"The fabric softener market is intensely competitive, with 120 formulas now available," said Pimchanok Chunkomlaphan, marketing director of the Downy and Ariel fabric care product group and Ambi Pur home care products. "Changing lifestyles, including increasing urbanization, condominium living, and modern work schedules, have created new consumer needs. Our latest consumer research, particularly among our core target of working women with limited time who wash clothes at night, revealed a common problem: clothes develop a musty, damp smell when they don't dry in sunlight. Downy Lux was developed specifically to address this concern."
Downy Lux is a concentrated fabric softener formula that achieved immediate success upon launch, capturing 2 percent market share within just three months. The company is now deploying a 100 million baht marketing campaign for the new Downy Lux sunny-fresh formula and has introduced actress Ling Ling Kong as the brand's new ambassador, embodying the image of modern working women who work hard, have limited time for household tasks, yet remain confident.
Marketing activities include the distribution of one million free trial-size samples nationwide, allowing consumers to experience the product's quality firsthand. The company targets Downy Lux to achieve 5 percent market share by the third quarter of 2027, which would boost Downy's overall market share to over 35 percent by year-end.
