Police in Songkhla's Muang District responded on August 10 at 8:35 p.m. to a report of an armed dispute at a home. Officers discovered the body of 53-year-old Mr. Winai, whose body was covered in blood with multiple stab wounds and gunshot injuries scattered across it.

The suspect, 29-year-old Mr. Peeraphon, fled the scene. Investigation revealed that Peeraphon's mother, a beautician, had been dating Winai for some time. Winai had warned Peeraphon about his drug addiction and invited Peeraphon's mother to stay at his house, which angered the young man, who feared his mother would neglect her own home and family.

On August 9, Peeraphon confronted Winai about taking his mother away and leaving him unable to care for his home and children. Relatives noticed Peeraphon carrying a knife but thought nothing of it. When Winai arrived at the house on August 10, the two argued again. When Winai turned away, Peeraphon drew a sharp-pointed knife and stabbed him repeatedly, then slashed his throat almost severing it. Peeraphon then grabbed Winai's .38 revolver and fired three to four shots before fleeing. Relatives stated that Winai carried the gun because he had a premonition something bad would happen.

Police are actively searching for Peeraphon, who is believed to still be hiding in the area. CCTV footage from a neighboring house captured the incident, showing both men wrestling before falling to the ground, followed by Peeraphon stabbing the fallen Winai more than 10 times while Peeraphon's mother screamed.

Thailand Hosts International Big Data Conference in Surat Thani
11 Aug Khaosod

The Big Data Institute (BDI), a public organization under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, is organizing the 7th International Conference on Big Data Analytics and Practices (IBDAP 2026) from August 7–9, 2026, in Surat Thani province. The conference serves as a forum for researchers, academics, experts, and professionals from diverse countries to share knowledge, technological advances, research, and practical experiences in applying big data and artificial intelligence to address challenges and develop the nation.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Theerani Achlakaul, director of BDI, welcomed participants and explained that IBDAP aims to build understanding of big data and AI potential through real-world use cases and technological progress, while creating a platform for Thailand and other nations to exchange experiences and knowledge. This year, 57 research papers from 13 countries have been selected for presentation, reflecting growing interest in big data and AI technologies at the international level.

BDI operates under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society with a mission to integrate and link data from various government agencies to develop high-value datasets that support policy design in both the public and private sectors. The institute also provides data analytics and intelligence services to help organizations use big data effectively for decision-making and policymaking.

A key BDI initiative this year is the Data Integration and Intelligence (D2) platform, designed to handle sectoral, geographic, and central data systems to address data silos. BDI aims to develop D2 into a national data backbone supporting future policy design, currently integrating data across multiple sectors including health, tourism, environment, agriculture, and commerce.

Simultaneously, BDI is advancing its Sovereign AI Program to build AI capabilities that Thailand can develop and control through collaboration between government, private sector, and educational institutions. A major output is Thai LLM (Large Language Model), which aggregates data from media, television stations, the National Library, and government agencies to prepare a large language model for the Thai language.

BDI also plans to expand its Sovereign AI initiative to cover regional dialects and accents, images, videos, and OCR-derived data to create both sovereign data and sovereign models. These will serve as critical infrastructure enabling the private sector and startups to develop and deploy AI products and services at reduced cost.

IBDAP 2026 presents advances in big data analytics and smart computing, covering key topics including big data, machine learning, data analytics, data governance, AI applications, big data infrastructure, and data security, with practical applications across various sectors.

10 Aug Khaosod

At 3:15 a.m. on August 10, a minivan struck a wild elephant crossing Highway 344 (Ban Bueng–Kaeng route) near the Pa Yub Subdistrict Administrative Office in Kaeng District, Rayong Province. Rescue officials found the van with a crushed front end, shattered windshield, and collapsed roof and hood from the violent impact with the large elephant. The driver, a curry and rice vendor heading out for morning sales, suffered head and facial lacerations and was transported to hospital.

According to the driver's son, Thanadol, his mother saw a large object crossing the road but in the darkness initially mistook it for a tree shadow. By the time she realized it was an elephant, she could not brake in time. The collision was so forceful that the van's frame struck the elephant hard, producing a loud cry that revealed what had happened. The injured elephant trumpeted and escaped across a canal into the forest toward a water reservoir.

Wildlife officials and related agencies have mobilized teams to track the elephant, assess its injuries, and provide ongoing care.

Teacher Dies After Exam Fraud Cost Him Job Opportunity
10 Aug Khaosod

A TikTok user @jet20xx, a friend of a local teacher named Ratchapol Chaloengkhun, has spoken out about how exam fraud may have cost his friend's life. Ratchapol placed 6th in the initial civil service exam results announced on February 19, 2025, for an assistant teacher position in social studies at the Chonburi examination center. The first round of appointments only called candidates ranked up to 5th, forcing Ratchapol to seek employment as a temporary teacher at a school farther from his home. On February 23, 2025, he died in a traffic accident while commuting to work, never knowing that after cheaters were disqualified and the rankings were recalculated on July 27, 2025, his name had risen to 1st place.

The friend expressed his grief on social media, stating that without the fraud, Ratchapol would likely still be alive. He noted that Ratchapol was the family's main financial support, his mother was ill, and he had been working toward sending his younger brother through university. The friend described the tragedy as the "greatest misfortune in the civil service exam system," adding that Ratchapol never had the chance to learn of his success before his death.
