Spirit Medium Denies Fraud After Woman Files Police Complaint
A woman filed a police complaint after paying 9,000 baht for a ritual at a Phatthalung spirit medium’s shrine, alleging she saw suspicious items in a video of the ceremony. The medium, Mr. Songphum, denied any fraud, explaining the fee covered three steps of a traditional cleansing ritual and that the woman supplied her own egg. He urged believers to use judgment and noted the shrine is licensed by local health authorities.
The medium explained the three-step procedure costing 2,999 baht each. First step: performing black magic to separate a husband by placing photos of the woman and her husband, writing names on the photos and on a wax figurine, tying them with sacred thread facing away from each other, and writing both names on a lotus leaf with the words ‘separated forever’. Second step: cracking a chicken egg to remove the black magic, which is where the controversy arose after the egg was found to contain hair. Third step: receiving the master’s blessing by wearing a traditional headdress to pay respect to the teacher. The medium said the woman brought her own egg and requested the cleansing ritual, even though the shrine claimed she came for love magic and to curse her ex‑boyfriend. He stressed he never deceived anyone, adding that the shrine holds a proper license for practicing folk medicine from Phatthalung Provincial Public Health Office.
