Sutin Challenges Thaikor Over Vague Claims on Secret Coalition Deal

Pheu Thai MP Sutin dismissed rival Thaikor's claims of a secret coalition plot to oust the PM as baseless, noting the government is stable and such negotiations wouldn't require meetings in Monaco.

Sutin Challenges Thaikor Over Vague Claims on Secret Coalition Deal
30 Jul Khaosod

Sutin Klangsamrarn, a Pheu Thai party list MP, on July 30, 2025, responded to claims by Thaikor Phollasuwann that a secret "red-green deal" political movement was underway involving discussions in Monaco to gather support for replacing the prime minister. Sutin argued that the coalition government is currently functioning well and no party has shown signs of attempting to topple it, dismissing the allegations as implausible. He pointed out that high-level political negotiations of the kind alleged would not require arranging meetings in Monaco when such talks could easily occur in Bangkok, and noted that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has already stepped back from active political management. Sutin criticized Thaikor for repeatedly making unverified claims, stating that without concrete evidence and detailed explanation, such vague statements only sow confusion and undermine public confidence in politics, which harms the country's progress. He urged Thaikor to present clear evidence or risk losing credibility entirely.

Mae Sai Residents Fear Flooding and Water Safety Linked to Mining

July 30, 2026 — Dr. Suebsakul Kitnugkul, a lecturer and researcher at the School of Social Innovation at Mae Fah Luang University, led a team investigating flooding impacts and water contamination in the Tham Pha Chom and Sai Lom Joi communities of Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province.

Dr. Suebsakul identified two major concerns from residents: increasingly severe and frequent flooding, and loss of confidence in drinking water safety. Residents reported that since 2021, Mae Sai has experienced flooding nearly every year or every other year—a stark contrast to the past when such events were rare. Floodwaters carry large quantities of mud and sediment into communities.

Residents believe mining operations less than 10 kilometers upstream are the root cause, leading to soil erosion and increased sediment in the river. They argue that flooding cannot be solved without simultaneously addressing the environmental damage from mining upstream. Regarding drinking water, although residents rely on municipal water supplies, they remain concerned about safety since the source waters are contaminated by mining activities. The water authority has attempted to switch to raw water from the Mekong River, but pollution tests by the Department of Pollution Control still detect toxins, heavy metals, and sediment in multiple areas—a "jumping from the frying pan into the fire" solution, residents say.

Dr. Suebsakul concluded that contamination in the Kok, Sai, Ruak, and Mekong rivers must be elevated to national priority status. He urged the government to use an upcoming visit by Myanmar's leader on August 6–7 to seriously discuss mining impacts and accelerate upstream remediation before effects expand further and threaten future food security.

Thai Police Clarify Georgia Investigation Framework in Death Case

Thai police clarified that Georgia's investigation into the death of "Hloon Solo" Baworntat Pengsuk using Article 115 of the penal code is a legal framework for gathering evidence, not a conclusion about the cause of death or criminal guilt

Thai Police Clarify Georgia Investigation Framework in Death Case
30 Jul Khaosod

Thai national police spokesperson Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairongkit Phiuphan clarified on July 30, 2569 the death case of Baworntat Pengsuk, known as "Hloon Solo," in Georgia, following reports that Georgian authorities are investigating under Article 115 of the penal code. The police spokesperson stated that Article 115 is a provision related to causing a person to commit or attempt suicide as a result of threats, cruel treatment, or actions affecting the victim's honor and dignity. However, conducting an investigation under this provision does not constitute a conclusion that the death resulted from suicide or that any person committed a crime—it is merely a legal framework used to gather evidence and examine facts comprehensively. Currently, the National Police Office has coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request information and verification from Georgian authorities, particularly regarding official findings and the confirmed cause of death. The Foreign Ministry is the primary agency coordinating with Georgian authorities through diplomatic channels. Coordination through INTERPOL has not yet yielded additional information. The National Police Office will closely follow developments and formally inform the public as soon as confirmation is received from Georgian authorities.

Social Media Fuels Thailand's Diplomatic Tensions With Cambodia and China

Toxic social media rhetoric is straining Thailand's diplomatic relations with Cambodia and China, with netizens in both countries driving government responses to disputes rather than formal diplomacy alone.

Social Media Fuels Thailand's Diplomatic Tensions With Cambodia and China
30 Jul Khaosod

Diplomacy is no longer confined to diplomats and politicians. Increasingly, and for better or worse, people-to-people relations shape ties between two nations. It is not just face-to-face contact, but the use of social media that shapes the trajectory of relations between two nations.

Two examples are apparent in Thailand: relations with Cambodia and China.

The toxic tensions between Thailand and Cambodia are at least a year old, if not longer. They have left both governments needing to ensure that they are not seen as too soft on the other country following two brief undeclared wars last year. This, unfortunately, means that any normalisation of relations between Thailand and Cambodia is partly dictated by angry netizens in both countries.

As it stands, many social media users in both countries have been hurling hate speech—and even dehumanising speech—at one another on a daily basis.

Another diplomatic dispute this week saw the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok come under heavy criticism by nationalist Thai social media users for issuing a statement that, rightly or wrongly, Thai netizens interpreted as unfair and arrogant.

This came after a physical altercation between a Chinese woman and a female security guard at a Bangkok fan meet sparked an online uproar in both Thailand and China. The Chinese Embassy in Thailand called on the Thai authorities to investigate, but failed to acknowledge that the Chinese woman had first assaulted a Thai security guard, following her lengthy refusal to accept that she had jumped the queue. This was quickly followed by Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow ordering a probe, further fuelling rage among Thais who perceive the Chinese Embassy as behaving as if it can tell the Thai government whatever it likes while the Thai government complies subserviently.

The Chinese Embassy's statement never acknowledged that the Chinese woman in the orange shirt had jumped the queue and then kicked a Thai security guard. Nor did it include any apology or expression of regret over the woman's behaviour.

Instead, the embassy reached a swift conclusion on this case, in stark contrast to its stalling over issues such as the toxic pollution in the Kok River, the "fake Thai children" controversy, and the many "grey Chinese" cases that have become almost daily news. Furthermore, the Chinese ambassador previously urged Thais to stop using the term "grey Chinese".

Many Thais are already concerned that China may be attempting to turn Thailand into a de facto tributary state in which Beijing can directly interfere in matters it cares about. Recent examples include alleged attempts to pressure Thai media into censoring masks depicting President Xi Jinping worn by Thai protesters over the Kok River contamination, as well as efforts to pressure Thai organisers of a Taiwan film festival to remove the name of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture from promotional materials, without going through Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Thai King and Queen Change Buddha Image's Seasonal Regalia
30 Jul Khaosod

On July 30, 2025, at 5:12 p.m., the King and Queen led a formal procession to the ordination hall of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Grand Palace to ceremonially change the Emerald Buddha's summer regalia to its rainy-season attire, accompanied by Princess Sirivannavari, Princess Tipangkornratchamichoti, and Princess Sineenart. The King ascended to the shrine, paid respects with a garland, removed the summer crown from the Buddha image, and carefully replaced the ceremonial items—including the conch, incense, and white cloth—before placing the rainy-season crown on the image's head. The Queen and the King then made further offerings and merit-making rites at various altars within the temple. Holy water blessed by the Emerald Buddha was later distributed to members of the royal family and other attendees. The King and Queen subsequently departed for Phiman Rattaya Hall to conduct a 50-day merit-making ceremony (Panya Samvara) for the late Princess Pacharakitiyabha.
