Thai Sugarcane Powers Global Sustainability Drive
51 min ago Khaosod

While sugarcane is traditionally associated with household sugar, the crop now plays a far wider role in modern Thai life. From cosmetics and health supplements to eco-friendly packaging and vehicle fuel, sugarcane has become embedded in daily routines in ways many people do not realize.

As a leader in agricultural sustainability, Mitr Phol Group uses innovation to unlock the potential of Thai sugarcane and create value under the "Sugarcane Energizes the World" initiative, elevating the crop from Thai soil into a global energy driver across three dimensions: clean energy for the environment and stable prosperity.

Sugarcane's journey begins as "land oil," a renewable energy resource Thailand can generate naturally by converting bagasse into high-quality ethanol for gasohol blends that reduce road pollution. Mitr Phol is now Asia's largest ethanol producer with 500 million liters annual capacity, offsetting 350 million liters of refined oil imports yearly and preparing to expand into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and future pharmaceutical and cosmetic raw materials.

The group's 22 biomass power plants generate over 700 megawatts annually, delivering clean electricity to industry and households across Thailand. This reduces fossil fuel imports by over 3 billion units and generates 1 million tons of carbon credits and 1 million renewable energy certificates yearly, a key lever toward Thailand's Net Zero 2050 target.

Sugarcane innovations address lifestyle and wellness across multiple dimensions. From pure sugars and syrups to health-conscious alternatives for businesses and consumers, the crop feeds into personal care products including prebiotic fiber for digestive health and skin care formulations from natural sugarcane extracts. In eco-living, sugarcane and cassava fibers become biodegradable packaging that decomposes naturally within six months, turning waste into soil nutrients.

Behind these innovations, Mitr Phol prioritizes "shared social growth," creating jobs across industry while distributing income back to local communities to drive the Thai economy. This security has become a force multiplying community prosperity across household economics, education, and environmental stewardship.

A dramatic scene unfolded on August 19, 2025, when a bronze-gray pickup truck attempted to drive through a raging floodwater current that had cut off a road in the Bang Thung Chai area of Pua District, Nan Province, only to be swept away by the force of the water in front of local residents. The flooding in Nan Province has created a critical crisis as severe flash floods and wild floodwaters have surged following 24 hours of heavy rainfall. Rescue and emergency response units from multiple sectors have mobilized to help evacuate residents from affected areas.

The provincial authorities declared Pua District a disaster zone affecting 12 subdistricts and 107 villages. Lower watershed areas, including Mueang Nan District, remain under the highest alert level, with floodwaters expected to reach the area within approximately 7–8 hours. DSI to Summon People's Party MP Over Foreign Share-Holding Claims
1h ago Khaosod

The Department of Special Investigation is investigating allegations that a People's Party member of parliament held shares on behalf of a foreign national. The agency plans to summon the individual to provide information, submit documents, and clarify whether they engaged in illegal nominee shareholding in Phuket. On August 19, 2025, Brigadier Warrant Officer Voranun Srilum, head of the Consumer Protection Division and DSI spokesman, revealed that financial writer Manthanee Tantisuk had shared media clips referring to the People's Party MP whom DSI planned to summon for factual clarification. The investigation stems from allegations that a People's Party member may have violated nominee shareholding laws in connection with a company registered in Phuket. DSI will summon all related parties to provide facts and documents clarifying whether the individual held shares for a foreigner; case details cannot be disclosed at this stage. Srilum explained that the DSI process has two phases: first, investigation of complaints or allegations potentially constituting special offences; the DSI does not wait for formal complaints but must follow criteria set by the Special Cases Investigation Act of 2004 before accepting a case as a special matter. Currently in the investigation phase, if findings show the case meets legal criteria, it will be accepted as a special case for further investigation. If criminal elements are found but criteria are not met, DSI will refer the matter to relevant agencies such as police or the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

Mother Defends Jailed Son in Temple Desecration Case

A mother visited a temple in Songkhla to defend her imprisoned son against accusations he desecrated a Buddha statue, asserting he remains in custody and could not have committed the August incident.

Mother Defends Jailed Son in Temple Desecration Case
1h ago Khaosod

A mother has visited the temple to demand justice and clarify facts, firmly denying that her son committed the sacrilege. An incident at Saraket Temple in Muang district, Songkhla, involved someone placing underwear on a Buddha statue, urinating on a principal Buddha image in the main chapel, and destroying religious items including altars and flower arrangements. Investigators believe the perpetrator is a recently released convict seeking to announce his return and exact revenge on a monk who had reported him to police, resulting in his arrest.

On August 19, Monk Aortchai from Saraket Temple revealed that the temple has not filed charges against anyone because the abbot chose to treat the matter as forgiveness. The temple lacks CCTV footage, making it impossible to identify the perpetrator. Monks and villagers cleaned the area, though odors remain, necessitating temporary closure of the affected section.

On the same day, the mother of the suspect visited the temple to seek justice and refute accusations, firmly asserting her son remains imprisoned and under court detention orders, having not been released. She stated she recently visited him in prison, making it impossible for him to have committed the act. She declared that if her son is genuinely guilty, she accepts legal proceedings and punishment, but emphasized that spreading false information has damaged her family's reputation, and she is prepared to pursue legal action against those spreading falsehoods.

The family is willing to provide information, cooperate with police and district officials, and submit documentation proving the son remains in custody to establish the truth and restore justice.

Doctor Warns: Avoid These 4 Things Within 30 Minutes of Waking

A deputy director at Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital warns against consuming caffeine, exercising heavily, or measuring blood pressure with a full bladder within 30 minutes of waking, as these can cause dangerous blood pressure spikes.

Doctor Warns: Avoid These 4 Things Within 30 Minutes of Waking
1h ago Khaosod

Dr. Jetsada Bunyavongvorachit, Deputy Director of Primary Care Services at Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, has shared health advice on his Facebook page about behaviors to avoid to prevent dangerous blood pressure spikes in the morning. He suggests being mindful of four things during the first 30 minutes after waking.

The morning is when your body transitions from sleep mode to wakefulness. Your nervous system becomes more active, your heart rate increases slightly, and blood pressure naturally rises from nighttime levels. For people with high blood pressure or those trying to get accurate readings, Dr. Jetsada warns against rushing to consume multiple stimulants at once.

1. Don't brew strong coffee immediately, especially before measuring blood pressure. Caffeine can temporarily increase heart rate and blood pressure in some people, particularly those sensitive to it. If you drink coffee before measuring, your reading may be higher than your actual resting blood pressure. If you measure blood pressure every morning, the recommended sequence is: wake up → use bathroom → rest for a few minutes → measure blood pressure → then drink coffee. Guidelines suggest avoiding caffeine for at least 30 minutes before measurement.

2. Don't measure blood pressure while you still have a full bladder. A full bladder can interfere with blood pressure readings. The proper approach is to use the bathroom first, then return to sit and rest before measuring.

3. Don't exert yourself heavily immediately upon waking, especially if you plan to measure blood pressure afterward. While regular morning exercise is beneficial for long-term blood pressure control, physical activity temporarily increases heart rate and blood pressure. It is recommended to avoid vigorous exercise for about 30 minutes before measuring blood pressure.

Bangkok Probes 3,200 Suspicious Pink ID Cards Issued in Dindaeng
1h ago Khaosod

Bangkok's deputy governor Adisorn Gamjitsugsri convened an emergency meeting on August 19th at City Hall to address the rollout of a crackdown on fraud in the registration of non-Thai nationals seeking identity cards. The Dindaeng district office has flagged an abnormally high number of address transfers into single residential units, in some cases exceeding 16 people per address, with 3,228 questionable registrations identified between 2017 and 2024. Officials have ordered all 50 districts to conduct immediate audits and submit complete and accurate data by September 1st for referral to the Ministry of Interior, with particular focus on pink ID cards bearing numbers starting with 7. Dindaeng district director Panisara Netrathorn said the office will enforce anti-fraud measures under the Population Registration Act, including inspections of residential buildings and notifications to landlords. Cases involving irregular address transfers where residents do not actually live at the registered address violate public health regulations and constitute fraud under Section 50 of the Registration Act of 1991, and will result in cancellation of registrations, criminal prosecution of offenders, and disciplinary action against any complicit officials. The district office has also instructed registration officials to review computer system reports daily and escalate any irregularities to the district director for immediate investigation and enforcement action.

Drafted Soldier Steals Traffic Police Motorcycle From Lodging

A drafted soldier stole a white traffic police motorcycle from a lodging house in Trat on August 19, apparently homesick and wanting to return home before fleeing in the vehicle.

Drafted Soldier Steals Traffic Police Motorcycle From Lodging
1h ago Khaosod

A drafted soldier stole a white traffic police motorcycle bearing the Trat insignia that was parked in front of a lodging house, abandoned it elsewhere, and walked back into town, apparently missing home. At 10:53 a.m. on August 19, 2025, Techitr Kulakanistatrakorn, commander of Mueang Trat Police Station, and Boonchai Suttivaree, deputy commander, received a report of the stolen police motorcycle parked in front of the traffic office building at Mueang Trat station. They immediately mobilized forces to track down the suspect with support from volunteer rescue workers. Officers located the white police motorcycle with Trat registration parked in front of a grocery store on Rai Pa-Dan Chumphol Road, Noen Sai subdistrict, Mueang, Trat. Police Lieutenant Somchoke Thiphyasat, head of the patrol unit at Mueang Trat station, apprehended the suspect at a three-way intersection on Sukhumvit Road in Wang Krajae subdistrict, Mueang, Trat. The suspect was a man wearing a green shirt with the name Surathat written on the front and the Navy insignia on the back. He was taken to point out where he abandoned the motorcycle and brought in for questioning at Mueang Trat Police Station for further legal proceedings. Preliminary investigation revealed the suspect was a drafted soldier who likely became homesick and fled, wanting to return home before committing the motorcycle theft. A local resident named Pitak, 52, who witnessed the incident while working nearby, said he saw the suspect ride up at high speed, abandon the motorcycle, and hurry back toward town. At first he thought it was an escaped prisoner and contacted rescue workers to inquire, but no escape had been reported, so he could only wonder why the man had fled. Another resident, a 50-year-old woman living across from where the motorcycle was abandoned, said she was cooking rice at her front door when she saw the suspect arrive and flee. She waved for help but remained unsuspicious, only puzzled why a soldier was riding a police motorcycle. A 44-year-old man named Somyot who gave the suspect a ride said he happened to be at a repair shop when the suspect asked for help getting to the Trat Provincial Transport Station. He agreed to drop the suspect at a three-way intersection in Wang Krajae subdistrict and only later learned the man had stolen a police motorcycle. The suspect had told him he was deceived into coming to work on fruit farms in Noen Sai. Police Lieutenant Nanthiphat Poolsawat, commander of the traffic unit at Mueang Trat station and owner of the motorcycle, said he had parked it in front of his office with the key left in the ignition after completing duties and stepping inside briefly to prepare for the next task. When he came back out, the motorcycle was gone. He initially thought a senior colleague had borrowed it but found no one knew anything about it until learning it had been stolen.
