Thai Hotels Shift Focus to Revenue Quality Over Occupancy

Thai hotels are shifting strategy from chasing occupancy rates to maximizing revenue quality, as rising costs and competition pressure operators to focus on pricing and ancillary services. Bangkok's occupancy remains strong at 76.2%, but Ph

Thai Hotels Shift Focus to Revenue Quality Over Occupancy
5d ago Khaosod

Knight Frank Thailand says the Thai hotel market is moving away from competing on occupancy numbers toward prioritizing revenue quality as operators face new competition, higher operating costs, and changing traveler behavior. Occupancy rates alone are no longer enough to drive revenue and profit, according to Carlos Martinez, research director and consultant at Knight Frank Thailand.

In the first half of 2026, Thailand welcomed 15.87 million foreign tourists, down 4.9% year-on-year, but hotel performance varies by location. Bangkok benefited from MICE business, medical tourism, domestic travel, shopping, and international events, pushing average occupancy to 76.2%. However, Bangkok's average daily rate (ADR) fell 2.1%, causing RevPAR to drop 0.6%. By contrast, Phuket saw occupancy decline 3.2% but ADR rose 5.3%, driving RevPAR growth of 1.1%, showing that pricing strategy matters more than volume.

"Hotels with high occupancy may not generate better returns if they cannot maintain room rates, manage costs, or create revenue from other services efficiently," Martinez said. Increased competition from new hotels and easier online price comparisons are pressuring properties, especially upscale operators unable to differentiate by brand or experience. Operators also face pressure from rising minimum wages, energy costs, online distribution fees, and customer acquisition costs.

Hotels must adopt integrated revenue management covering pricing, sales channels, food and beverage, events, wellness services, and non-room revenue. For the second half of 2026, Knight Frank expects continued demand from business travel, MICE, international tourism, and major events, though international flight capacity, tourist source markets, and new hotel openings will be more influential than visitor numbers alone.

Politician Urges PM to Clarify Gun Control Measures

Opposition MP Rangsimant Rom called on the PM to clarify gun control policy and require mental health assessments for gun owners, following recent mass shootings in Thailand where civilian firearms ownership ranks among the world's highest.

Politician Urges PM to Clarify Gun Control Measures
5d ago Khaosod

Rangsimant Rom, an opposition list MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, called on Prime Minister Anuthon Chanyawiriyakul to provide clear gun control measures and conduct mental health assessments of gun owners. Speaking at Parliament on August 13, 2025, following recent mass shooting incidents—most recently in Nakhon Ratchasima province—Rom said he believes everyone is concerned, given that Thailand ranks among the world's highest in civilian firearms per capita.

Rom acknowledged that gun-related regulations have been problematic since firearm shops opened, and the recent tragic incidents underscore the need for urgent action. He stressed that measures must ensure public safety, especially in schools and public spaces, so people no longer live in fear. To date, he said, the government has offered only vague reassurances, with the Prime Minister and Interior Minister simply telling people not to carry weapons—which Rom argued misses the real point.

When solving the gun problem, Rom said the state must first clarify its policy: does it want citizens to own firearms or not? Even though illegal guns exist, legally owned firearms have been used in shocking incidents, so authorities must examine the loopholes in vetting procedures for gun owners. He questioned whether background checks are rigorous enough and called for improvements to the screening process.

Rom proposed that if the state wants to reduce firearms, it should drastically cut the number of legal guns and clearly identify who truly needs them—even police officers should be included in this scrutiny. He noted that police currently lack state-issued service weapons and must buy their own, making oversight difficult. Government officials, police, and soldiers have faced stress and substance abuse issues in the past; without proper controls, tragedies will keep recurring, he warned.

When asked about the Prime Minister's response, Rom said society has already formed its judgment, but the key question remains: what is today's problem? If it is too many firearms, the PM must spell out which groups are allowed to own them. If civilians cannot own guns, how will the state ensure their safety and protect their property? If the government cannot solve those problems, people will resort to self-defense, creating an endless cycle. Any exemptions for civil servants, police, and soldiers must have clear conditions.

Rom stressed that mental health screening of gun owners cannot be overlooked. Although owners may have been healthy when licensed, their mental state may have deteriorated since. Without ongoing psychological checks, incidents like these will continue. When asked if the criticism targets politicians with large personal gun collections, Rom said the issue involves politicians, police, soldiers, and administrators alike, all of whom own firearms. The real question is whether firearms are truly necessary and, if ownership is allowed, how the government can then ensure public safety.

On August 13, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, a former Election Commission member, posted on Facebook questioning the commission's handling of allegations that its investigators received 860,000 baht from a local politician in Amnat Charoen province between April and July 2024. The Election Commission acknowledged the money transfer but denied any connection to a separate parliamentary election fraud case. Somchai demanded clarification on several points, including the outcome of the provincial investigation, the composition and decision of the sub-committee that reviewed the case, and the positions taken by the investigation deputy secretary and election commission secretary before the commission voted to dismiss the complaint. He also questioned whether criminal fraud charges have been pursued against those involved. Somchai warned that if the commission does not provide clear answers, the case could result in criminal fraud charges being filed against the election commission itself for misconduct and breach of duty.

Siam Commercial Bank Launches Smart Wealth Strategy

Siam Commercial Bank launched its One Smart Wealth strategy, offering tailored financial solutions and investment guidance to help clients navigate market volatility and achieve long-term wealth goals across generations.

Siam Commercial Bank Launches Smart Wealth Strategy
5d ago Khaosod

Siam Commercial Bank's wealth management division partnered with SCBAM, InnovestX and global investment partners to host a seminar titled "SCB Wealth Investment Outlook: The New Market Regime – Turning Uncertainty into Opportunity", offering economic and investment perspectives alongside guidance for managing volatility in today's markets under the One Smart Wealth strategy, which connects investments to customers' life objectives.

Peramassiri Monolmai, Head of Wealth Business at Siam Commercial Bank, said SCB Wealth aims to be a trusted financial partner, protecting and transferring wealth across generations. One Smart Wealth combines capabilities across the SCBX group and international partners to deliver tailored financial solutions—from deposits and loans to investments, insurance, estate planning, tax advice and inheritance transfer—drawing on expertise from SCB's Chief Investment Officer, Economics and Investment Committee, investment consultants and family offices.

SCB Wealth introduced the VAULT Framework for five-dimensional asset management: Value Income for steady cash flow, Accumulation for long-term growth, Umbrella for risk protection, Liquidity for emergency access, and Tactical for short-term opportunities aligned with market conditions. This approach elevates portfolio management beyond return-chasing alone to wealth management linked to life goals.

Sarachai Sunettha, Deputy Head of Wealth Business and CFA charterholder, noted that in the first half of 2025, global markets were driven by AI infrastructure investment from hyperscalers and Middle Eastern tensions. While AI remains a major growth driver long-term, upstream AI stocks have risen sharply and partially priced in positive expectations, creating correction risk if earnings disappoint. He recommended diversifying into mid and downstream AI businesses with growth potential at lower valuations, and adding income-generating assets like Thai REITs, high-dividend Thai stocks, foreign bonds and structured notes to portfolios.

BlackRock recommended three key investment themes: AI Scarcity—AI remains important but high valuations require careful security selection and concentrated risk management; Beyond Labels—assets across categories may share common risk factors or drivers, so diversification should analyze fundamental factors and asset-specific risks; and Durable Income—steady, sustainable income coupled with diversification is core to building flexible, resilient portfolios.

At approximately 2:00 a.m. on August 13, 2025, the Chiang Rai Narcotics Suppression Unit, working with a Tak provincial task force and Border Patrol Police, arrested two suspects and seized about 300 kilograms of methamphetamine.

The operation began after officers received a tip from the public about a large trafficking network smuggling illegal substances into central Thailand. Officers tracked the network and discovered a drug transport operation using four vehicles: a green Honda City with Phayao license plate (KF 6691), a gray Toyota Yaris with Chiang Rai plate (KD 5400), a black Toyota Revo with Chiang Mai plate (YM 9282), and a Toyota Fortuner with Chiang Rai plate (KL 2626), along with a black Honda Wave 125 motorcycle (2 KK 1394, Chiang Rai). Each vehicle had different roles, such as surveillance and drug transport.

Officers tracked the convoy and intercepted them in Ban San Trai Ngam, Moo 5, Dong Mahawan Subdistrict, Wieng Chiang Rung District, Chiang Rai Province. They arrested two male suspects found in the main cargo vehicle and seized nine bags of methamphetamine weighing approximately 300 kilograms. The occupants of the other vehicles fled under cover of darkness.

The arrested suspects and seized drugs have been handed to the Chiang Rai Narcotics Suppression Unit for legal proceedings. Authorities are expanding the investigation to identify other network members and accomplices.

Thai Authorities Seize 126 Reptiles Hidden in Airport Mail
5d ago Khaosod

Bangkok — Suvarnabhumi Airport officials have seized more than 120 live reptiles, including ball pythons, hidden in two postal parcels falsely declared as dried fruit snacks and food and bound for the Philippines.

The seizure was made by officers from the Suvarnabhumi Airport Wildlife Checkpoint under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, working with the Customs Department's investigation and suppression unit and the Suvarnabhumi Postal Centre.

The operation followed a risk assessment targeting the illegal export of prohibited items through the Suvarnabhumi Postal Centre and the outbound cargo inspection facility in the Free Zone at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan.

During X-ray screening of two international registered postal parcels, officers spotted objects resembling living creatures and carried out a detailed inspection.

The parcels were sent from Surat Thani province and were falsely declared as "dried fruit snacks and food", with the destination listed as the Philippines. When opened, officers found live reptiles packed in cloth bags and transparent plastic containers.

The haul consisted of four sulcata tortoises, 16 iguanas, 88 ball pythons and ornamental snakes, 16 tegus, spiny-tailed lizards and bearded dragons, and two leopard geckos.

The two parcels weighed more than 18 kilogrammes in total.

Komkrit Pinsai, head of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Wildlife Checkpoint, said the illegal international shipment of wildlife by post was not only a serious offence but also caused suffering to the animals and posed a risk of spreading infectious diseases.

Authorities have stepped up cooperation among relevant agencies to strengthen screening measures, including analysing shipping patterns and using detection technology, to prevent Thailand from being used as a transit route for the illegal wildlife trade, he said.

The seized animals were confiscated and the case was filed under Section 23 of the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act 2019 for exporting regulated wildlife without permission; Section 242 in conjunction with Sections 166 and 167 of the Customs Act 2017; and Section 31 of the Animal Epidemics Act 2015.

The case has been handed to investigators at Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station, who will gather evidence and track down the sender and other people involved for legal action.

All the live animals have been handed over to the Wildlife Health Management Group under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation for further care.

A Thai country singer was left stunned when a coconut frond crashed through her car window while parked near a coconut plantation on August 13, 2026. The black sedan, registered as 1484 Yasothon, had its rear window pierced by the entire frond, which remained embedded inside. The driver, Bon Saengthong, explained that she had chosen what she believed to be the safest parking spot with the fewest coconut trees nearby, carefully checking before parking, but the freak accident still occurred—marking the second such incident for her. Following the accident, she visited a temple to receive a blessing and ritual water pouring from a monk to ward off further misfortune. Her fans responded with concern in the comments, with some joking that the car's license plate might bring luck, while others offered sympathetic support for her string of bad fortune.

Village Chief Orders Two Boys to Do Squats After Fake Gun Scare

A subdistrict chief in Nonthaburi Province confiscated replica firearms from two boys aged 14-15 near a school and ordered them to do 20 squats as punishment after they were found carrying the realistic-looking fake guns out of mischief.

Village Chief Orders Two Boys to Do Squats After Fake Gun Scare
5d ago Khaosod

At 12:30 p.m. on August 13, Pannadhorn Temnak, the subdistrict chief of Bang Kurud, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province, disclosed that the previous evening, while conducting a security patrol per provincial orders regarding drugs and firearms, he received a report from health station staff about two boys aged approximately 14-15 carrying weapons near a school fence at the entrance to Wat Tem Rak Samakkhi lane.

Upon arrival, the chief found the two boys walking with weapons in hand. When ordered to stop for inspection, he discovered the firearms were plastic replicas designed to look realistic—an 11mm replica gun with magazine and a plastic Colt Double Eagle-style gun. The confiscated weapons alarmed residents because of poor lighting, making it impossible to distinguish real from fake.

When questioned, the boys admitted they were walking with the fake guns out of mischief and peer pressure, intending to buy plastic pellets for target practice. During the encounter, one boy tried to discard a hidden knife and attempted to flee before the chief stopped him. The boys were trembling with fear throughout the journey to their home, where both broke down in tears.

The chief reported that he initially planned to order 30 squats each but reduced it to 20 after seeing the boys' distress. He warned their guardians not to let them leave home at night and confiscated the replica guns to prevent further incidents. The chief added that he and village officials have intensified patrols and are conducting daily backpack inspections at three schools: Klai Soan Suksit School, Wat Tem Rak School, and Bang Kurud School. The confiscated weapons have been reported to the district office.

Education Scholar Urges Overhaul of Ministry Structure

An education scholar urges the Thai Ministry of Education to eliminate redundant provincial and regional offices that duplicate roles and waste budgets without improving student learning outcomes.

Education Scholar Urges Overhaul of Ministry Structure
5d ago Khaosod

An education scholar has called for the Ministry of Education to eliminate redundant provincial and regional education offices, arguing they duplicate roles, waste budgets, and create territorial conflicts without improving education quality. He has urged political leaders and decision-makers to undertake structural reform and reorganization to redirect resources toward student learning and school development.

Sompong Jittaradet, an education academic, commented on the cabinet's plan to abolish 11 support functions across the civil service. He said the operations of provincial education offices and regional education offices significantly overlap with education area offices and ministry inspectorates, and that these structures have failed to deliver meaningful benefits to national education quality in a cost-effective way, nor have they met their original objectives.

Sompong noted that while provincial and regional education offices were originally created to improve personnel management and streamline organizational structure, in practice they have only increased the number of civil servants and expanded staff positions. They have also created territorial conflicts, particularly competition for power between provincial offices and area offices, leaving regional agencies working without coordination.

He argued the structures are not cost-effective, functioning mainly as channels for career advancement, with most funding consumed by salaries and positions rather than benefiting students or schools. He described them as redundant bureaucratic fat within the education system serving only a small group.

He acknowledged that provincial and regional offices do provide some value in monitoring and implementing central policies and initiatives such as the Thailand Zero Dropout programme and tracking education innovation zones. However, compared to their staffing levels and budgets, they deliver insufficient value and fail to justify their expenditure.

Sompong said political leaders have long avoided addressing this issue. He called on political leaders and decision-makers to show courage in reforming and restructuring these offices, redirecting budget and resources toward genuine improvements in student and school quality.

He advised the Ministry of Education to seek consensus on structural and operational grounds, especially as it prepares for broader civil service reform aimed at reducing civil servant numbers and improving work efficiency. Without internal agreement, he warned, education decentralization efforts will stall further. He emphasized the urgent need to reform ministry structures and management systems to maximize education system quality and performance.
