Thai Telecom Regulator Moves to Remove Committee Chair
Thailand's telecom regulator filed to remove NBTC Chairman Sorin Bunyaiphaichaya after he lost a legal challenge to his removal but continued attempting to work, disrupting other commissioners.
The selection committee of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission announced on September 28 that it received a request from NBTC commissioners asking the committee to petition the Central Administrative Court for temporary protective measures while cases remain pending. On September 25, the court dismissed Clinical Professor Sorin Bunyaiphaichaya's lawsuit challenging the committee's determination that he was unqualified to hold office under the broadcasting and telecommunications law. However, he has continued to signal his intention to perform duties at NBTC meetings and offices, obstructing other commissioners' work. The selection committee decided to implement administrative enforcement measures to suspend him from his position and filed a petition with the Central Administrative Court requesting the court order his removal as NBTC chairman, citing the need to protect the public interest and allow remaining commissioners to continue their functions without disruption.
