Thai U-23 Coach Eyes Deep Asian Games Run
Thailand's U-23 team aims for a deep run at the Asian Games starting September 15 in Japan, relying on teamwork and experience gained from Japanese coaching influence rather than individual superstars.
Thailand's U-23 national team coach Thawatchai Damrongtangcool said that Thailand has benefited from working with multiple high-quality Japanese coaches in the past, which has helped develop Thai players. Speaking ahead of the 20th Asian Games men's football tournament on September 15 at Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, the Thai team sits in Group A with Japan (hosts), Kyrgyzstan, and Hong Kong, with the top two advancing to the quarterfinals.
Coach Thawatchai stated that while Thailand lacks superstars, the team focuses on collective effort and teamwork, mirroring Japan's style. He noted that Thailand has previously learned from skilled Japanese coaches working in both clubs and the national team, resulting in Thai players gaining experience abroad and enriching domestic football.
The coach praised the hosts for their warm welcome, strict security protocols, quality accommodation, varied and delicious food, and nearby training facilities. He expressed confidence ahead of Thailand's opening match against Kyrgyzstan, noting the team has faced them during FIFA international dates. Many Thai players have faced Japan multiple times in youth competitions, bringing valuable experience to the squad.
