Thai Windsurfers Shift to Land Training as Typhoon Disrupts Asian Games Prep
Thai windsurfers shifted to land-based training after a typhoon disrupted water practice at Japan's Asian Games venue, with four athletes preparing to compete in Nagoya starting September 23.
The Thai national windsurfing team preparing for the 20th Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya, Japan, consists of four athletes: William McMillan (IQFoil men's open), Siriporn Kaewduangngam (IQFoil women's open), Vachirawit Tanuap (IQFoil men's under-19), and Chantakarn Charoensuk (IQFoil women's under-19), supported by coaches Sakda Skolphaeng and Nathpong Potinpratarn, and sports scientist Somphop Sakdi.
Pattana Bunsawat, secretary-general of the Thai Windsurfing Association, reported that a typhoon struck the training and competition venue over the past two to three days, prompting organizers to suspend sea activities on September 20-21, 2025. Coaches have shifted athletes to land-based fitness training to maintain conditioning, with plans to resume water practice once weather permits.
The Thai team is scheduled to check into their accommodation on September 23, 2025, staying at a hotel near the competition venue. At the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, held in Ningbo, Thailand's windsurfing contingent won three medals: gold from Siriporn Kaewduangngam (RSX women)—her third Asian Games medal following bronze finishes in 2014 and 2018—silver from Nathpong Potinpratarn (RSX men), and bronze from Athicha Homraruean (IQFoil women's open).
