Thai Woman Cleared in Ice Drug Case Returns Home
A Thai woman detained at Fukuoka Airport in July with methamphetamine hidden in a coffee packet has been cleared of drug trafficking charges and returned home after Japanese prosecutors found insufficient evidence against her.
A 28-year-old woman hired to carry goods for Thai residents living in Japan was detained at Fukuoka Airport on July 11 after customs officials discovered ice crystals hidden inside a coffee packet in her luggage. She was traveling with her 28-year-old boyfriend and another friend who worked as couriers for overseas Thais. Japanese prosecutors subsequently issued an order not to prosecute her for drug trafficking, concluding there was insufficient evidence linking her to the offense. The woman arrived back at Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 1 at 4 p.m. and immediately met with Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) officials to give an additional statement. Senior police commanders oversaw the questioning, which covered her interrogation in Japan and cooperation with Japanese authorities, as well as details about the intended recipient of the package. Her family members were present at the NSB to offer support.
