Border Residents Fear Third Conflict as Thailand-Cambodia Clashes Mark One Year
22 Jul Khaosod

As July 24 approaches, marking one year since the Thai-Cambodian border fighting erupted, residents of Surin province say the traumatic memories of the violence remain unforgettable. Cambodian leaders Hun Sen and Hun Manet attacked Thai communities, homes, and an oil facility with BM-21 rockets, killing multiple people across several areas. The violence has created lasting fear among border residents, who worry Cambodia may use the anniversary to trigger a third round of conflict, even though some have become desensitized after enduring two previous rounds.

Border communities remain tense, with the Chong Jom trade market in Kabin Buri district, Surin province, now eerily quiet. Thai shops continue operating, but lack the usual crowds and tourists. Residents pray the government will restore their confidence and prevent further war, or at least ensure any future conflict is the last.

Muay, 45, a lottery vendor at the border market, explained that locals must continue daily life despite their fears. "If fighting breaks out, we evacuate," she said. "During the second round, we received help from volunteers that eased our expenses, though we still went into debt. We just hope for peace and to reclaim Thai territory for our children's future." Elderly residents particularly fear a third conflict, but most are waiting for government reassurance before changing their routines.

Three Rescued After Pickup Truck Flips in Muddy Road

Three people trapped in an overturned pickup truck near Nong Han were rescued by quick-thinking local residents who dug them free from the mud-filled cab on a Udon Thani road. All three passengers sustained only minor injuries.

Three Rescued After Pickup Truck Flips in Muddy Road
22 Jul Khaosod

Emergency services in Udon Thani responded to a pickup truck rollover on the Nong Han–Ban Sabang road near Ban Rai Phatthana on July 22. When rescuers arrived, they found a white Isuzu D-Max on its side with the cab sunk deep into mud. Local residents, however, had already extracted the three passengers—a 59-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman, and a 1-year-old child—with help from Good Samaritans before emergency crews arrived.

The driver had been traveling from Ban Thon Nak Phleng toward Nong Han District when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and lost control, veering off the road. Fortunately, the mud was shallow and nearby residents responded immediately. One local hero, Pan, 58, heard the vehicle's horn and rallied neighbors to dig mud away from the cab and windows to free the trapped occupants. His quick thinking and coordination with villagers earned praise from rescue workers and community members as the key to saving all three lives.

The child's mother, Anisa, arrived at the scene shaken but relieved to learn her family was safe. She revealed that her son had narrowly avoided being hit by a car that morning before the afternoon accident. Another first responder, Thongsin Hanyathan, also a local resident, was driving past when he spotted the flipped truck and heard the horn. He immediately stopped, helped pry open the door, and prioritized extracting the crying child first, then assisted the elderly passengers. Rescue personnel provided first aid, washing away mud from their faces and eyes, before transporting all three to Nong Han Hospital with minor injuries.
