Thailand Opens Royal Barge Procession Rehearsals to Public

Thailand is opening rehearsals for the Royal Barge Procession 2026 to the public, with 52 ceremonial barges and 2,200 navy personnel preparing for a royal ceremony honoring Queen Suthida's birthday on November 6 along Bangkok's Chao Phraya

4d ago TAT Newsroom

Visitors and members of the public are invited to witness the Royal Barge Procession 2026 and its rehearsals along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. From the first rehearsal on 17 August through to the Royal Kathin Ceremony on 6 November, these occasions offer a rare opportunity to observe one of Thailand’s most historic royal traditions.

The Royal Barge Procession will take place on 6 November 2026 for the Royal Kathin Ceremony at Wat Arun Ratchawararam, as part of the celebrations on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana’s fourth-cycle, or 48th, birthday anniversary on 3 June 2026. During the ceremony, His Majesty the King will present Kathin robes to Buddhist monks in Her Majesty’s honour.

Centuries old and reserved for major royal and religious occasions, the Royal Barge Procession remains a living expression of Thailand’s royal heritage. The tradition brings together ceremonial protocol, naval skill and intricate craftsmanship preserved across generations, and continues to hold an important place in the Kingdom’s royal ceremonial heritage.

The Royal Kathin Ceremony is an annual Buddhist merit-making tradition following the end of Buddhist Lent, when robes and other offerings are presented to monks. When performed by the monarch, it becomes a Royal Kathin Ceremony, bringing together Thailand’s royal and Buddhist traditions in one of the Kingdom’s most significant ceremonial observances.

For the 2026 Royal Barge Procession, 52 royal barges will be manned by 2,200 Royal Thai Navy personnel and arranged in five columns and three lines, forming a procession approximately 1,280 metres long and 90 metres wide. The fleet includes four principal royal barges: Suphannahong, or Golden Swan; Anantanakkharat, or Multi-headed Naga; Narai Song Suban King Rama IX; and Anekkachatphutchong, or Innumerable Naga Figures.

The royal barges will depart from Wasukri Pier and proceed along the Chao Phraya River, passing Phra Sumen Fort, Somdet Phra Pinklao Bridge, Siriraj Hospital, the Grand Palace and the Royal Thai Navy Auditorium before arriving at Wat Arun Ratchawararam. The procession follows the traditional route established during the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.

In preparation for the Royal Kathin Ceremony on 6 November, the Royal Thai Navy will conduct 12 rehearsals from August to October, comprising 10 minor rehearsals and two full-dress rehearsals. Each rehearsal is expected to begin at approximately 14.30 Hrs.

The 10 minor rehearsals are scheduled for 17, 20 and 27 August; 3, 8, 17 and 23 September; and 2, 8 and 15 October. The two full-dress rehearsals will take place on Wednesday, 21 October and Wednesday, 28 October.

Members of the public and visitors can observe the rehearsals from viewing areas along both banks of the Chao Phraya River between Krung Thon Bridge and Wat Arun Ratchawararam. The same stretch of riverfront will also offer opportunities to witness the Royal Barge Procession on 6 November, giving visitors a choice of dates from August to November to observe this living piece of Thai royal heritage.

Honda Invests 12 Billion Baht for Two New Models

Honda is investing 12 billion baht to produce two new vehicle models in Thailand, with the first launching by year-end and the second in 2025. The automaker aims to reach full production capacity of 150,000 units annually by 2025.

Honda Invests 12 Billion Baht for Two New Models
4d ago Khaosod

Koji Iwanami, president and CEO of Honda Automobile (Thailand), announced that following consultations with six Japanese automakers and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Honda is calling on the Thai government to lower import tariffs on Japanese vehicles to improve fair competition and give Thai customers more choices. Honda is also requesting extended timelines for current hybrid models that may not meet new regulatory standards, though the company is preparing components to comply with requirements for new models, which cannot all be ready immediately among the four out of six models produced in Thailand.

For the expansion, Honda has allocated 12 billion baht to set up production lines for two new vehicle models, with the first launching and going on sale by year-end and the second following in 2025. This makes Thailand the only country outside Japan where Honda produces eight vehicle models in total, demonstrating the country's importance and growth potential.

Currently, Honda's Thai plant produces 110,000 vehicles annually from a full capacity of 150,000 units operating two shifts, serving domestic demand of 76,000 units and exports of 35,000 units. The company aims to reach full capacity by 2025.

Honda's latest model, the Super-ONE, a compact electric vehicle imported from Japan tuned for performance close to fuel-powered cars, launches at 990,000 baht with only 30 units available this year. Interested buyers can reserve online at www.honda.co.th/e-quotation on Monday, August 17, 2025, from 10:00 to 17:00 only.

Squash Chief Urges Government to Rethink Sports Fund Policy

Thailand's squash association chief warns that a planned 1.3 billion baht sports fund allocation for 2027 falls short of the 2 billion baht needed for elite athlete development, risking Thailand's competitive standing in regional and global

Squash Chief Urges Government to Rethink Sports Fund Policy
4d ago Khaosod

Chalitrat Chantrubeksasa, president of the Thailand Squash Association, has publicly voiced concerns on behalf of the national sports associations regarding budget allocation from the National Sports Development Fund. Speaking in representation of the sports associations, he disclosed that budgets owed to them from 2022 and 2023 remain unpaid because the Thailand Sports Authority and the fund diverted those amounts to other initiatives, including the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, resulting in losses to the associations. For 2027, the fund plans to allocate only 1.3 billion baht to excellence-level sports activities with no further increases, whereas excellence-level sports programs typically require approximately 2 billion baht collectively from all sports associations. This consolidated budget covers athlete development, coaching staff salaries, national and international competition hosting, sending athletes abroad for skill development, and accumulating world ranking points for participation in major regional and global competitions.

Chantrubeksasa stated that he has previously objected to what he views as insufficient funding, and noted a concerning new distribution method based on each association's capacity, divided into four tiers with the highest receiving no more than 35 million baht, followed by 14 million, 8 million, and 2 million baht, with developing associations receiving only 2 million baht in 2027. He believes major sports associations will find this allocation inadequate for developing elite athletes, particularly in sports requiring world ranking points for qualification to the Asian Games, Olympic Games, and other international competitions. Chantrubeksasa reported that during a fund screening committee meeting, fund manager Tanukhiat Chanchu indicated this policy came from the office of Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, the government's sports overseer, and that Thailand Sports Authority Governor Kong Sak Yodmani agreed to discuss the matter further with the fund. "I regard this as government policy," Chantrubeksasa said, "and I believe it will inevitably cause Thailand's sports to decline. I respectfully urge the Deputy Prime Minister to reconsider and revise this policy. If the government proceeds with it, you will bear responsibility for the consequences that follow."

New Book Explores Thai Temples as Modern Tourist Attractions

A new book examines how Thai temples have evolved into tourist attractions resembling amusement parks, tracing this shift from temple architecture before the 1997 economic crisis to the spiritual entertainment parks that emerged afterward.

New Book Explores Thai Temples as Modern Tourist Attractions
4d ago Khaosod

The book "Buddhailand: Kingdom of Faith and Modern Thai Temples" is written by Pinyaphan Patchanalavanya, published by Matichon Publishing House, and costs 330 baht. The book examines how Thai temples have become tourist attractions resembling amusement parks. It addresses this phenomenon through three main discussion topics: diverse Buddhist concepts and religious site construction; giant architectural structures and Buddhailand's formation before the 1997 economic crisis; and Thai-style spiritual entertainment parks after the 1997 crisis.

Nationally, the 1997 economic crisis marks a critical turning point that brought government tourism support policies and the development of roads accessing off-main-route areas. This made temples and Buddhailand-style religious sites more accessible by private vehicles, aligning with contemporary cultural changes influenced by popular culture conveyed through various media such as dramas, films, and cartoons from both Thailand and abroad. Different areas within temples resemble different zones of an amusement park. Temples reputed to bring good fortune attract crowds of people hoping for success in work and romance, filling these sites with visitors.

Across the country, the geographical locations of temples and religious sites vary. Sacred objects and structures are often linked to specific regions: Luang Por Srivichai in the North, Naga in the Northeast, Somdet Phra Phutthacharoen (Luang Por Sodh) in the Central region, and Jatukham Rammathep, Luang Por Tuat, and Ai Khai in the South. However, some sacred objects have expanded in popularity across regions, such as Somdet Phra Phutthacharoen, Luang Por Tuat, Ai Khai, and Naga. Certain sacred objects enjoy widespread popularity with no geographical limits, such as Guan Yin and Thao Wessuwan, which became extremely popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic and life stress from the pandemic marked a major turning point that brought significant changes to Buddhailand-style temples and religious sites.

Readers can find answers in this edition of Buddhailand.

Other book recommendations include "Religion: A History of Faith Among Humanity," translated by Sunantha Wannasin Bel from Richard Holloway's work, published by Bookscape, which presents world religious history vividly and reflects how religion overlaps with social, political, and cultural dimensions. The book costs 365 baht. Also recommended is "Jataka Tales: 50 Stories Teaching Children to Be Good People," compiled by MIS Editorial Team, which curates 50 jataka tales with moral lessons suitable for children.

Wat Nikom Pratip in Trang has released new amulet coins honoring Venerable Abbot Luang Por Thaan Hwan, a respected meditation master whose blessed objects are carried by military officers serving in Thailand's southern border provinces.

Trang Temple Releases New Amulet Coin of Venerable Abbot
4d ago Khaosod

Luang Por Thaan Hwan, abbot of Wat Nikom Pratip (Wat Khok Lod) in Muang District, Trang Province, and adviser to the Trang provincial sangha, is a renowned meditation master of Trang. He has been regularly invited to participate in consecration ceremonies for amulets and sacred objects, including portrait coins and ritual amulet coins. He is known for his strict adherence to monastic discipline, simple practice, and dignified conduct, earning the deep faith of military officers from the Fourth Army Region who carry his blessed objects while serving in the southern border provinces.

On November 14, 2022, he received the monastic rank of Phra Racha Khana. When he reached 72 years of age on October 31, 1999, his disciples commissioned 10,000 portrait coins and held a grand consecration ceremony attended by senior monks from the region. Most recently, in 2007 on his 80th birthday, disciples created a second series of amulet coins—round in shape with a full portrait on the front, a dot above, and the name "Phra Kru Adulkun Athan (Hwan)" below. The reverse features circular script with text reading "In Commemoration of the 80th Birthday, 2007" and "Wat Nikom Pratip (Wat Khok Lod), Trang Province." The coins were distributed to disciples and devotees who attended the merit-making ceremony. Though newly released, these amuints are already highly sought after.

Kasikornbank Raises Foreign Tourist Target to 31.3 Million

Kasikornbank raised its 2025 foreign tourist forecast to 31.3 million visitors with 1.54 trillion baht in revenue, though still expecting a 4.9% decline from 2024 due to Middle East tensions and regional competition.

Kasikornbank Raises Foreign Tourist Target to 31.3 Million
4d ago Khaosod

Kasikornbank Research Center has raised its forecast for foreign tourists visiting Thailand in 2025 to 31.3 million people, with tourism revenue expected to reach 1.54 trillion baht. The research center indicates a slight improvement in the trend of international arrivals in the remaining months of 2025, provided Middle East tensions do not escalate to disrupt international travel and airspace remains open. Recovery in European and Middle Eastern tourist markets is expected to drive growth in the fourth quarter, traditionally a peak season for European travelers.

Data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports shows that from January 1 to August 8, 2025, foreign tourist arrivals totaled 19.15 million, down 2.9% compared to the same period last year. Key headwinds include Middle East tensions, intensifying international tourism competition, and economic challenges in several countries affecting foreign travel plans.

However, Kasikornbank Research Center has upgraded its 2025 forecast to 31.36 million foreign tourists—a 4.9% decline from 2024—compared to its earlier estimate of just 30 million in April. This reflects better late-year recovery prospects than previously anticipated. Key support comes from European and Middle Eastern tourists, provided Middle East tensions do not escalate. Additionally, airfares on many routes are declining from conflict-driven peaks, though still above prior-year averages, while airlines are running promotions to stimulate travel.

Other factors expected to boost late-year tourism include global conferences and events in Thailand, such as the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings 2026 and the Tomorrowland Thailand music festival, along with year-end holiday promotions.

However, the market faces multiple risks. Kasikornbank Research Center notes that the foreign tourist market remains fragile, particularly due to intensifying tourism competition and changing tourist behavior. Regional competitors like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia continue to attract growing numbers of foreign tourists. Thailand's key declining markets include South Korea, Malaysia, India, and Indonesia. Indonesian tourist arrivals in the first seven months of 2025 fell 23.2% year-on-year, partly due to rupiah depreciation—approximately 7% weaker against the baht as of August 5, 2025.

The South Korean market faces pressure from economic and stock market headwinds, with South Korean outbound travel declining 5.9% in June and July, preventing full recovery in arrivals to Thailand. Additionally, advance flight bookings to Thailand for August through November 2025, as of July 31, declined 2.1% from projections on July 16, reflecting market uncertainty. Most flight reductions are in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly from India, Indonesia, and South Korea.

Foreign tourist revenue in 2025 is forecast at approximately 1.54 trillion baht, down 3.1% from the prior year, while average spending per person per trip is estimated at around 49,000 baht, up 2% from 2024. Overall spending patterns remain relatively stable.

Bank of Thailand Pushes Baht-Yuan Direct Trade Settlements

Six Chinese banks have added the Thai baht to their yuan settlement systems, expanding local currency trading options for Thai businesses amid efforts to reduce reliance on major currencies in regional trade.

Bank of Thailand Pushes Baht-Yuan Direct Trade Settlements
4d ago Khaosod

The Bank of Thailand says at least six Chinese commercial banks have added the Thai baht among roughly 12 foreign currencies to their systems for direct clearing and settlement with the yuan, giving businesses more tools to hedge currency risk. The central bank has long promoted local currency use in international trade and investment—a priority across the region due to bilateral trade flows and rising volatility in major currencies, especially from geopolitical tensions. The bank supports businesses by enabling local-currency transactions through various frameworks: bilateral currency-swap agreements with China and mechanisms set up jointly with Malaysia and Indonesia to encourage local-currency trade and investment.

However, a Swift report on global and international payment currencies in June 2025 shows that local currency settlement for goods and services remains low compared to major currencies, partly because many businesses still have trading partners across multiple countries and need major currencies. In Thailand's case, even though over 62 percent of trade is with Asian partners, only 17 percent of the total trade value is settled in local currencies. Thailand-China trade sees combined baht and yuan use in roughly 18 percent of bilateral trade value.
