Thailand Launches Half-Interest Loan Program to Aid Economy
Thailand's government launches a half-interest loan program through village funds nationwide to ease household debt and boost grassroots economic relief, coordinating with local administrators to reach communities.
The Village and Urban Community Fund is launching the "Thai Help Thai: Capital Boost, Half-Interest" programme through village headmen and broadcast networks to address grassroots economic pressures.
Suksumrued Wanthaniyakul, Prime Minister's Office Minister, explained that the government's Quick Big Win emergency policy seeks to ease household costs and resolve debt problems. The Village and Urban Community Fund Committee has approved the "Thai Help Thai" initiative, which will increase capital for village and urban community funds to boost liquidity and reduce borrowing costs for members, helping ease grassroots economic hardship and informal debt.
To reach communities nationwide, the National Village and Urban Community Fund Office is coordinating with the Interior Ministry and District Administration Department to promote the programme. District officers, as heads of local support committees, will push village and community funds to apply for budget support and will publicise the initiative through monthly administrative meetings and village assemblies, as well as via community broadcast systems.
"This is a key government policy to tackle grassroots household hardship," Suksumrued said. "We thank the District Administration Department for supporting the fund's work through local government channels. We expect this will boost applications significantly. The fund office has prepared data and staff at provincial coordination centres and branch offices nationwide to help implement the programme."
