Thailand Miss ASEAN Cup Title As Indonesia Wins Penalty Shootout
Thailand lost the ASEAN Cup final to Indonesia 6-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, finishing with ten men following a red card. Coach Anthony Hudson said he was proud of his players' effort and vowed to strengthen the team for upcoming challenges.
Anthony Hudson, head coach of the Thailand men's national team, expressed pride in his "Warriors" even though they fell short in the ASEAN Cup final. The match on October 5 ended 2-2 after extra time, and Indonesia prevailed 6-4 in the penalty shootout. Thailand was reduced to ten men in the 80th minute when Nicolas Mickelsen was sent off for a second yellow card. After the game Hudson said, "First, congratulations to Indonesia; they played well and are on the right path. They have good, strong players. I feel sad, but I must say I am proud of the players for everything they gave in this match – their spirit, their response, and the fact that we never blamed anyone even after going down to ten men. Penalties are like a lottery, but I am proud, especially of Saran whenever he gets a chance to play he does excellently." He also congratulated John Heerdman, noting their previous encounters, and commented on the rapid development of ASEAN football, citing Indonesia's many dual‑heritage players and wishing them luck. Hudson admitted feeling sad about the loss, said he would take a short break before focusing on preparation for the Asian Cup, and stressed the need to keep the core group from this tournament while integrating promising young talent. He highlighted the importance of players like Sarach Yooyen, who always give their all for the nation, and lamented injuries and the loss of Jonathan Khemdee. Hudson concluded that the squad's togetherness in the dressing room was meaningful and that he aims to build a stronger team through internal competition and continued development.
