Thailand's U-23 Coach Faces Floods While Team Falls to China
Thailand's U-23 football team lost 0-3 to China in the Asian Games quarterfinals, with coach Wuttachai acknowledging China's superior development while dealing with flooding at his home near Bangkok.
Thailand's men's football team lost to China 0-3 in the quarterfinals of the 20th Asian Games in Japan. After the match, Coach Wuttachai Damrongdongtrakul said that reaching the last eight was a respectable achievement. From the start, the team aimed to collect three points against two weaker opponents before facing Japan. Although most Chinese players are only 21 years old, they play primarily in Europe and the Japanese league, which is why Wuttachai wanted his Thai players to face quality opposition and learn what they needed to improve—whether in ball speed or game understanding. He noted that Thailand faced China four times this year, and while they had competed evenly before, this time China showed clear improvement. They had kept their squad together longer, played more regularly, and brought in senior players to bolster their squad, making them noticeably stronger. Although the players recognized China's strengths, they could not stop them, and Wuttachai acknowledged that Thailand could not match China's tactical approach. He expressed regret, hoping his younger players would perform better than he had during his own playing career, but admitted that China's development is now far superior to what it was in the past. Wuttachai's contract with the Thai Football Association expires in October, so he will need to meet with administrators to review his performance and report on the team's development through each camp and tournament, what was achieved, and what needs to be added to raise the team's level. He confirmed his readiness to serve the nation and is willing to continue, but the decision rests with the administrators. On a personal note, Wuttachai revealed that his home in the Rangsit, Khlong 4 area has been flooded, with water rising to knee level since the previous night. He instructed his family to move valuables to the second floor and relocate to Ratchaburi province. Despite the difficulty, he and his family are encouraging each other—his family supported him in fulfilling his duties coaching the team, and he will return home to recharge with them once this tournament concludes.
