Thailand and US Launch Study on Small Nuclear Reactors
Thailand and the US have signed an agreement to study the feasibility of small modular nuclear reactors in Thailand, as Bangkok seeks to diversify energy sources and support its clean energy transition.
BANGKOK — Thailand and the United States have agreed to conduct a preliminary feasibility study on small modular reactor (SMR) power plants in Thailand as Bangkok explores options to strengthen energy security and support its clean energy transition.
The agreement was signed on 14 September between the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) at Gastech 2026.
Energy Minister Akanat Promphan witnessed the signing, alongside US Deputy Secretary of Energy James Danly, Permanent Secretary for Energy Prasert Sinsukprasert and US Ambassador to Thailand Sean K. O'Neill.
USTDA Acting Director Thomas R. Hardy and EGAT Governor Narin Phonvichai signed the agreement.
Hardy said the partnership would promote advanced nuclear technology and strengthen energy security across the Indo-Pacific by working with trusted partners.
Narin said the study would help EGAT assess potential sites, costs and regulatory requirements for SMR technology in Thailand.
He said SMRs could eventually form part of Thailand's long-term power mix, helping strengthen grid stability and support economic and industrial growth as electricity demand rises.
The cooperation marks another step in Thailand's efforts to develop a more secure and diversified energy supply while pursuing its carbon neutrality goal.
