Tropical Storm Looms as Heavy Rain Batters Thailand Through Sept 13
Heavy rain is battering Thailand through September 13 as a tropical storm develops over the South China Sea, with the Southern region facing the most severe downpours and flash flood risks.
The Meteorology Department issued its eighth warning on September 10, 2025, concerning severe to extremely heavy rain across Thailand through September 13. On September 10, the Northern, Northeastern, Central, and Eastern regions, along with Bangkok and its vicinity, and the Southern region are experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in some areas due to a high-pressure system and cold air mass spreading over the upper North and upper Northeastern regions. A monsoon trough is being steered southward toward a strong low-pressure system over the central South China Sea, combined with moderate southwest monsoon winds covering the Andaman Sea, Southern, Central, Eastern regions, and the Gulf of Thailand.
From September 11 to 13, the Southern region will see increased rainfall with heavy to extremely heavy downpours in some areas, while the North and Northeastern regions will experience decreasing rain. The Central region, Bangkok and vicinity, and Eastern region may see heavy rain in places. A strong low-pressure system over the central South China Sea is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone and move toward northern Vietnam's coast by September 13 to 14.
The public is urged to prepare for dangers from heavy rainfall, accumulated water, flash floods, and runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and foothill zones near waterways. Avoid travel through flood-prone routes, especially in low areas.
