Trump Threatens Iran Infrastructure for Hormuz Strait Attacks

President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that the United States will destroy Iranian bridges or power plants every time Iran fires on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters reporting on July 23. The threat follows warnings from the Houthi group, an Iran-aligned armed faction in Yemen, that it will block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical southern Red Sea energy corridor between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Seven tankers have already rerouted through the Red Sea to avoid the strait since Tuesday's Houthi threat to blockade Saudi Arabian oil exports, adding fresh risk to global oil supply amid escalating regional tensions.
Iranian military sources reportedly vow to retaliate against Trump's threats by destroying infrastructure across Middle Eastern nations. Iran's near-total control of the Hormuz Strait, combined with Houthi threats near Bab el-Mandeb, has triggered global inflation concerns and new shipping risks, pushing crude prices to six-week highs above $95 per barrel before settling around $93.
In recent days, U.S. airstrikes have expanded from southern Iran to western and central regions, while Iran has struck critical freshwater and power plants in Kuwait this week and also targeted U.S. military installations in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Brigadier General Amir Hatami, commander of Iran's ground forces, stated that Iran is reinforcing military capabilities to counter treaty violations. Iranian media quoted Hassan Kachkavi, spokesman for Iran's parliament national security and foreign policy committee, saying Trump is caught in an impossible situation.
Iranian health ministry officials disclosed 53 civilian deaths and 592 injuries since late June, while the U.S. military insists it has not targeted civilians. The conflict has resulted in 18 American military deaths and over 450 wounded. President Trump attended a ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday honoring four American service members killed in recent Iranian attacks—three in Jordan and one in Iraq. Trump stated it was among the hardest duties of his presidency.
