Woman Dies After Botched Cesarean in Mae Hong Son Hospital
3 Aug Khaosod

On August 3, 2026, a 34-year-old widower from Mae Hong Son traveled with his father to file a complaint with Paveena Hongsukul, founder of the Paveena Hongsukul Foundation for Children and Women, regarding his wife's death following childbirth. His wife, 35 years old and carrying their third child at 38 weeks gestation with a scheduled delivery date of July 17, 2026, began experiencing vaginal bleeding on July 9. She was admitted to a provincial hospital but was transferred to the regional hospital for cesarean delivery, which took place on July 10 between 4 and 7 p.m. The baby, a healthy boy weighing 3.5 kilograms, was delivered safely. However, the mother suffered severe postpartum hemorrhage, losing approximately two liters of blood.

The husband reported that the female surgeon told him the scalpel had accidentally damaged the bladder and torn the uterus during surgery, though she claimed the damage was minor and had been sewn closed. Despite blood transfusions given daily following the cesarean, the mother's condition continued to deteriorate. She required a breathing tube and remained hospitalized in the ICU. The family underwent four surgeries in total, including procedures at other hospitals to attempt to stop the bleeding using balloon insertion to plug the bleeding site, but the hemorrhaging could not be controlled. The wife died on July 19, 2026, with the death certificate citing "blood loss from postpartum hemorrhage" as the cause.

After the incident, the deputy director of the second provincial hospital acknowledged a surgical error but provided no clear support or compensation plan. The family sought assistance from Paveena Foundation, requesting that the hospital take responsibility and provide compensation to the family that had suffered this loss. The man noted that his wife had registered for prenatal care at the first provincial hospital using Thailand's gold card benefit starting around four to five months of pregnancy. The doctor had informed them that her first two children were delivered naturally, but the third child could not be delivered vaginally due to a low-lying uterus.

State Hospitals Bear 87% of Patients but Receive Only 64% of Gold Card Funding

State hospitals treat 87% of gold card patients but receive only 64% of funding, creating a severe budget shortfall as private providers get four times more per capita, prompting a review of allocation criteria.

State Hospitals Bear 87% of Patients but Receive Only 64% of Gold Card Funding
3 Aug Khaosod

On August 3, Dr. Suphachoke Wetchaphun, head of the Public Health Ministry's inspection unit, disclosed a critical imbalance in gold card funding distribution. State hospitals currently face revenue shortfalls compared to expenses due to rising costs for medications, medical supplies, and non-tenured staff salaries. In fiscal year 2568, hospitals received 246.9 billion baht from non-budgetary sources, with 107.7 billion baht (43.6%) coming from the 30-baht gold card scheme.

Dr. Suphachoke noted that the National Health Security Office allocated 168.3 billion baht in fiscal 2568 for 47.15 million gold card holders, averaging 3,856 baht per person. However, state hospitals caring for 41.13 million beneficiaries (87% of the total) received only 107.7 billion baht (64% of total funding), translating to 2,618 baht per person. Meanwhile, other providers—private hospitals, university hospitals, and local health organizations—serve only 13% of patients but receive 60.6 billion baht (36% of funds), averaging 10,063 baht per person, four times higher.

Further analysis reveals that from 2565 to the present, per-capita basic service funding increased by only 26%, while targeted health activity budgets climbed 71%. Dr. Somruk Choksomboon, Public Health Permanent Secretary, proposed reviewing allocation criteria to align funding with actual service burdens and populations served, particularly for specialized programs like HIV treatment funds, ensuring equitable care quality nationwide.

Thailand Seeks Public Input on Retirement Fund Law Updates
3 Aug Khaosod

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is accepting public input to evaluate the performance of the Provident Fund Act, B.E. 2530, and related regulations as part of its mandatory five-year review. The consultation aims to update the law to align with current conditions, enhance the fund's role as a savings and investment tool, and ensure employees accumulate sufficient retirement savings. Under the 2019 Law Assessment and Drafting Procedures Act, state agencies must conduct legal effectiveness assessments at least every five years from the date a law takes effect. The SEC previously conducted such an assessment in 2021 and proposed amendments in 2023, but now faces a fresh five-year review deadline in 2025. The agency is seeking input from stakeholders and the general public on challenges and obstacles related to the Provident Fund Act, with the goal of improving the law and strengthening the fund's efficiency as a retirement savings mechanism. Interested parties can submit comments on the SEC website (https://www.sec.or.th/TH/Pages/PB_Detail.aspx?SECID=1194) or the national law portal (https://law.go.th/listeningDetail?survey_id=Nzc5NkRHQV9MQVdfRlJPTlRFTkQ=), or by email to thitimam@sec.or.th or pajaree@sec.or.th by October 2, 2025.

Police Chief Orders Urgent Probe of Officer Linked to Drug Trafficking
3 Aug Khaosod

National Police Spokesperson Deputy Police General Trairong Phiwphan revealed on August 3, 2026, that Police General Kittiwat Panthoetchai, the national police chief, has ordered an urgent investigation following allegations made in a television program. The wife of one suspect in the murder case of two Russian siblings stated that the suspect had obtained drugs from a relative who is a police officer at Huai Yai Station in Chachoengsao, claiming the officer said he would sell all his inventory to buy gold jewelry for his wife. Chachoengsao police have denied involvement in any such matter.

In response, the national police chief has ordered the immediate investigation of the facts reported in media to determine whether the allegations have merit. If substantiated, decisive legal action—both disciplinary and criminal—will be pursued without delay. Officers have been instructed to seize the accused officer's mobile phone for expedited forensic examination to gather evidence. If evidence is found, the case will proceed through legal channels, and any other officers implicated will face equally decisive action. The police chief has confirmed that the Royal Thai Police will not shield such officers under any circumstances.

Simultaneously, the national police chief has directed Region 2 Provincial Police to investigate all allegations made in the television program, including detailed interviews with victims who provided information. The police are also examining the statute of limitations on the alleged drug trafficking offenses, which remain within the prosecution window. Investigators are gathering evidence and will pursue charges against any individuals implicated, without exception. The National Police Office is also reviewing the pardon process and prisoner transfer procedures with the Department of Corrections to identify weaknesses and prevent similar issues in the future. The police chief has reaffirmed that any officer found to be involved in misconduct will face strict disciplinary and criminal proceedings in line with the national police chief's policy.

Wife Files Suit Against Husband and Mistress Over Birthday Betrayal

A Udon Thani woman is suing her husband and his mistress after he skipped their daughter's 4th birthday party on August 1 to meet the nurse at a hotel, despite repeated calls from the child.

Wife Files Suit Against Husband and Mistress Over Birthday Betrayal
3 Aug Khaosod

A wife from Udon Thani has opened up about her decision to move forward with legal action against her husband and his mistress. The 41-year-old woman hired a private detective to monitor her 36-year-old husband, a civil servant, after discovering he was secretly meeting a young nurse from Nong Khai—a relationship that had apparently been ongoing since their school days.

The breaking point came on August 1, 2025, when her daughter turned 4 years old. Instead of attending the birthday celebration, the husband lied to his family about having urgent work obligations and instead took the young nurse to a hotel. When their daughter called him repeatedly, he continued to lie about his whereabouts. The wife had previously confronted the nurse's parents in hopes of resolving the situation, but to no avail.

On August 3, 2025, the wife stated that she has exhausted all chances for reconciliation and is now determined to pursue legal action against both her husband and the nurse. She expressed deep pain over the fact that he prioritized the affair over his daughter's special day, showing no interest in spending time with their child. Attempts to reach the husband for his response were unsuccessful.

Interior Minister Phlepeer Suwannachavee presided over the opening of the nationwide electronic land office system on August 3, 2025, at the Bangkok Land Office's Chatuchak branch, upgrading 17 Bangkok land office locations to full electronic systems. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Permanent Secretary Phassakorn Bunlaksam, Deputy Land Department Director Trairat Tephborirak, and Bangkok Metropolitan Electricity Authority Governor Dichavat Chanthri, along with senior government officials.

Suwannachavee stated that the government prioritizes using technology to solve problems and create tangible benefits across all government processes by reducing unnecessary steps, linking data between agencies, and designing services based on citizen needs. He emphasized that Interior Ministry agencies should operate as a one-stop service where citizens do not need to travel far, submit duplicate documents, or contact multiple agencies for the same service.

The Land Department has developed its electronic office system to cover all 77 provinces and 462 offices nationwide. The Bangkok land office and its 17 branches now operate as fully electronic facilities where officials, applicants, parties to contracts, and witnesses can sign electronically. Suwannachavee praised department staff for their development efforts and outlined future goals: improving service speed from 30 minutes to 15 minutes per transaction, achieving full e-document capability, and enabling complete online transactions with legal validity for property buying, selling, transferring, and document signing.

Five Suspects Charged in Local Exam Cheating Scam

Five suspects have been charged in a local government exam cheating scam, with the former director-general of the Department of Local Administration among eight others still to appear before investigators this week.

Five Suspects Charged in Local Exam Cheating Scam
3 Aug Khaosod

On August 3, Pol. Lt. Gen. Natthasakdi Chaowasuwan, commander of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), announced progress in a local government exam fraud investigation after his office issued summonses to thirteen suspects to hear charges. Five suspects have already appeared to be informed of the allegations, while the remaining eight, including Theerutm Suphavibulyaphon, former director-general of the Department of Local Administration (DLA), have requested postponements. Theerutm is expected to appear this week, while the other seven are expected to appear in early next week as they arrange legal representation. Of the five suspects who have already appeared, one is from Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) and four are civil servants found at a residence on the day of the incident, including Rueangdech Sirikij, director of SWU's Office of Educational and Psychological Testing. Rueangdech, who previously testified as a witness, maintained his original statement when appearing as a suspect. Evidence now clearly shows officials were involved in the wrongdoing, with charges varying among suspects—some face joint liability charges while others are accused of being accomplices. Once investigators complete gathering evidence and statements, the case will be submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for review to determine whether the CIB or NACC itself will proceed further. The case is expected to be submitted to the NACC by August 12.

Rabbit Farming Thrives as Trang Breeder Supplies Southern Thailand

A Trang farmer has built a thriving rabbit farm producing over 100 rabbits monthly for meat and decorative markets across southern Thailand, generating 15,000–18,000 baht in monthly income with minimal local competition.

Rabbit Farming Thrives as Trang Breeder Supplies Southern Thailand
3 Aug Khaosod

A 52-year-old farmer in Trang province has successfully converted his livestock shed into a rabbit farm, raising meat rabbits and decorative rabbits to meet demand from customers throughout southern Thailand. After initial attempts at goat and guinea pig farming proved unsuccessful, farmer Nawi Chankrachang of Na Phud Subdistrict, Mueang Trang District, switched to raising New Zealand White and Angora rabbit breeds starting in 2022. These breeds are prolific, easy to raise, grow quickly, and produce attractive offspring.

The farm currently produces over 100 rabbits monthly. Meat rabbits reach market weight of 2.5 kilograms or more in 3–4 months and sell for 200–350 baht each—double the price of pork. Each doe produces 7–8 kits per pregnancy cycle, occurring roughly every 30 days. The rabbits are fed standard pellets supplemented with fresh banana leaves, grass, rice bran, and chemical-free kitchen garden vegetables, with daily exercise outside their enclosures to reduce stress.

Middlemen purchase meat rabbits weighing over 2 kilograms directly from the farm at a rate of 50–100 per month and ship them to Pattani province. Decorative rabbits are sold to customers throughout Trang and neighboring provinces for restaurants, cafés, petting zoos, and hotels, priced at 200–450 baht each. Demand for decorative rabbits now exceeds supply, requiring advance orders of several months.

The farm generates supplementary income of 15,000–18,000 baht monthly. Nawi notes that rabbit farming is an overlooked but viable profession with virtually no local competition—only he and one other breeder in Na Phud Subdistrict produce meat rabbits at scale, each supplying at least 150 per month. Currently about 30 young rabbits have recently weaned and are ready for sale, with nearly 70 more meat-breed rabbits growing. Nawi describes it as a good alternative occupation requiring minimal management and time, and regularly hosts farmers and students visiting to learn the trade.

Senate Committee Tours BWG Industrial Waste Site in Saraburi
3 Aug Khaosod

A Senate committee headed by Pol. Lt. Col. Sukij Thangtong visited a Better World Green (BWG) industrial waste facility in Saraburi province on August 3, 2025, to verify the company's waste management systems and address public concerns. Committee members, including deputy chair Nit Ariyawongsakul, toured the landfill site in Huay Haeng subdistrict, Kaeng Koi district, and recommended that BWG increase proactive communication with the public and community to improve understanding of the waste disposal business.

BWG representatives confirmed that the company uses an engineered landfill system with multiple safety features, including compacted soil barriers, base liners, leachate collection systems, and wastewater treatment facilities—not a simple dig-and-bury method as some have mistakenly believed. The system is designed to prevent any treated water from leaving the facility. The company also maintains monitoring wells around the site to continuously test groundwater and surface water quality for contamination.

Waste is separated into hazardous and non-hazardous categories, with hazardous waste undergoing treatment to reduce its dangerous properties before entering the landfill. BWG has filed an appeal against a recent Department of Industrial Works order, arguing that the detection of substances in the internal leachate collection and treatment system does not constitute proof of pollution discharge into public waterways without clear evidence of a direct link.

The Huay Haeng area and Klong Takhe are part of a larger watershed serving multiple activities including residential communities, agriculture, livestock, and industrial operations. The company contends that any pollution source investigation should examine the entire watershed system.
