Ram, a Malaysian YouTuber and travel companion of the late Hilum Solo, attended the funeral ceremony. Chulalongkorn University's rector praised Hilum as a role model for youth development, emphasizing that the university's rural scholarship program represents more than financial support—it embodies life capital, demonstrated by Hilum's grandmother's dedication to raising him well.

On August 9, the second night of Buddhist chanting was held at a home in Somdet District, Kalasin province, for Hilum Solo (Bavortat Pengsuk), a renowned backpacking YouTuber. Prof. Dr. Wileash Phurivaj, rector of Chulalongkorn University, presided over the ceremony, accompanied by university officials, the Chulalongkorn Rural Center, alumni associations, Ram (Hilum's Malaysian friend and travel partner), and fellow YouTubers. The rector paid respects and offered condolences to Hilum's grandmother, praising him as a youth exemplar for personal development.

Prof. Dr. Wileash stated that while Chulalongkorn University supports dedicated students through its rural scholarship, the true gift extended to Hilum was life capital itself. He noted that Hilum embodied this spirit, inspiring thousands of young Thais to pursue their dreams and serving as a positive role model. The university recognizes that development transcends financial aid—it builds human capital. He also expressed gratitude to Hilum's grandmother for raising him with integrity and compassion, making him an exemplary figure for society.

The final night of chanting will be held on August 10, led by Kalasin's governor and other provincial officials. The funeral rites are scheduled for the afternoon of August 11 at Rangsee Chatchawal Temple in Somdet District, Kalasin, with thousands of mourners expected to pay their respects.

Man Collapses After Drinking Beer and Eating Durian

A 55-year-old man collapsed in Ayutthaya after drinking beer all day and eating durian, with doctors unable to confirm if the combination triggered his symptoms or his pre-existing brain cancer was responsible.

9 Aug Khaosod

On August 9, rescuers responded to a report of a 55-year-old man losing consciousness at a residential community near Wat Phananchoeang in Khlong Suan Plu subdistrict, Ayutthaya province. The man, identified as Mr. Anuphop, had been drinking beer since morning before eating durian in the evening, after which he showed abnormal symptoms, vomited, and became unresponsive to stimulation. Relatives immediately contacted rescue officials from Ayutthaya United Heart Foundation, who coordinated an ambulance to transport him urgently to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital. Beer bottles and durian remnants were found in the house.

Mr. Nakhrop, 50, the patient's younger brother, recounted that his brother had traveled from Bangkok and they drank beer together from morning until around 4 p.m., when the patient wanted durian and consumed about half of one. He then appeared drowsy and went to lie down, becoming unresponsive when called. Nakhrop stated he consumed the same beer and durian without symptoms.

Mrs. Orsa, 71, the patient's mother, explained that her son had come to visit her in Ayutthaya after a family disagreement about buying durian, as his siblings had previously forbidden him from eating it. She said he initially seemed normal while drinking with his brother, commenting that the durian was delicious, before gradually tilting backward, foaming at the mouth, and losing consciousness. She later learned her son had a pre-existing condition related to brain cancer.

As of the latest report, the patient remains unconscious under intensive care. Medical authorities have not yet determined whether the symptoms resulted directly from the combination of durian and alcohol, or if his underlying brain cancer condition was a contributing factor.

Teens Fire Gun in Village, Hit Bystander
9 Aug Khaosod

On August 9, at approximately 4 p.m., about 10 teenagers recklessly fired guns along a road in Nong Wua So village, Nong Wua So District, Udon Thani Province. A stray bullet struck a local resident, Thongda, 63, in the neck as he sat outside his home. His family rushed him to Nong Wua So Hospital, and he has since returned home to recover.

Initial investigation revealed that the youth involved, aged 13–15 and from outside the village, were attempting to shoot at a rival group but missed and hit the bystander instead. They fled the scene on motorcycles. District Officer Itthiphon Suyalai and Nong Wua So Police Station officers tracked down 10 suspects and recovered a homemade firearm.

During questioning, the teenagers admitted they opened fire over a dispute involving a woman. Although the injured man has decided not to press charges, police noted that firearms offenses remain serious legal matters, especially when minors are involved. Authorities are coordinating with parents and a multidisciplinary team to determine each suspect's specific involvement before applying the Child and Youth Protection Act.

Government Launches Crackdown on Illegal Hotels and Businesses in Bangkok
9 Aug Khaosod

The government is cracking down hard on illegal business networks and nominee schemes, according to Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Pheriswiwattana speaking on August 9. Interior Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary General Piersuwannachai led a special task force from the Department of Local Administration and partner agencies in launching Operation Integrated Huai Khwang to inspect hotels and businesses in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district following public complaints. The investigation will examine shareholding structures, financial trails, land ownership, and allegations of state officials demanding benefits.

The integrated operation involves the Department of Local Administration, Immigration Bureau, Department of Business Development, Department of Employment, and Special Cases Investigation Department (DSI). Preliminary checks found some establishments operating without proper licenses, unauthorized building modifications, and evidence of Thai nationals being used as nominee shareholders for foreign investors. Inspectors also identified safety concerns including faulty fire escapes, emergency exits, and fire suppression systems. Labor inspections uncovered illegal foreign workers and workers in jobs reserved by law for Thai nationals.

Lalida emphasized that the government takes seriously allegations of state officials accepting bribes. During the operation, business owners attempted to offer benefits to officials in exchange for not facing prosecution and named officials from certain agencies. Evidence has been collected and will be investigated for disciplinary and criminal action. The Interior Ministry will also coordinate with the Land Department to check property ownership, trace financial flows linked to online gambling QR codes, and examine payments processed outside Thailand's banking system.

The operation is not limited to Huai Khwang or Bangkok, Lalida said, with the Interior Ministry preparing to expand inspections nationwide using three approaches: gathering intelligence from the public and local representatives, monitoring online platforms linked to illegal businesses, and tracing financial trails to identify true beneficiaries. The government confirmed that enforcement will target all parties involved regardless of whether they are foreign investors, nominee shareholders, legal or accounting service providers, or state officials, applying the full force of the law to prevent illegal businesses from exploiting legitimate Thai entrepreneurs.

Police Officer Defends Himself After Journalist Injured in Confrontation

A police deputy inspector in Khon Kaen claims he only grabbed and threw journalist Triteep during a confrontation at the station after the reporter challenged him to fight, leaving Triteep with a head injury requiring 12 stitches.

Police Officer Defends Himself After Journalist Injured in Confrontation
9 Aug Khaosod

On August 9, a police deputy inspector named Worrawit (surname withheld), a deputy chief of the investigation unit at Ban Plai Police Station in Khon Kaen province, has given his account of an altercation with local journalist Triteep, known as "Mo," that occurred at the station's investigation room. According to Worrawit, he and his team had returned from fieldwork that afternoon and were eating and discussing cases when Triteep arrived around 6 to 7 p.m., sat nearby without being acknowledged, and remained silent for about 20 minutes before Worrawit casually asked why Triteep looked so thin and where he had been. Triteep allegedly took offense, responding defensively that if Worrawit suspected drug use, he could submit to a urine test—but only if Worrawit also did. When an armed officer present told Triteep to leave, Worrawit thought the matter was settled, but Triteep soon returned and challenged him to a one-on-one fight.

Worrawit stated that when Triteep approached him with a fighting posture, he stood and ran toward him, but insisted he did not punch—only grabbed, swung, and threw Triteep without looking back. He later learned that Triteep's head had hit the ground hard enough to require ambulance transport and 12 stitches to his right eyebrow. Worrawit denied carrying a weapon during the incident and maintained that his initial question was merely an observation, not an accusation of drug use. He called for a proper investigation that would include both parties and all witnesses, and specifically questioned the purpose of Triteep's visit to the station that day, noting it was supposedly a holiday for village headmen duties. Worrawit denied Triteep's claims of being choked, emphasized that his group had not touched or spoken to Triteep before that single question, and vowed to fight the case with facts and evidence rather than simply accept allegations.
