Beloved Backpacker 'Aunt Backpack' Dies After Retirement
Retired public health official Kanchana Pantutecha, known as "Auntie Backpack" for her solo travel adventures across Southeast Asia and Europe after retirement, has passed away on September 3, 2025.
The Facebook page 'Aunt Backpack' posted a message on September 3, 2026, announcing the peaceful death of the account's owner. The message thanked all followers and friends for their admiration and support, with funeral arrangements to be announced later.
Aunt Paw Kanchana Panthutecha, known as 'Aunt Backpack', was a retired civil servant who previously worked at the Department of Disease Control under the Ministry of Public Health. She retired in 2014 and dedicated herself to traveling and finding happiness in her post-retirement years. She shared her experiences at the Health Care 2024 health fair, Thailand's premier health exhibition, in a special talk titled 'Aunt Backpack: A Traveler Seeking Happiness After Retirement'.
During her transition to retirement, she began taking daily outings to youth centers and libraries before being inspired by a backpacking guidebook to travel solo. Her early trips were within Thailand, but she later expanded to neighboring countries including Myanmar and Vietnam, before traveling extensively throughout Europe, collecting positive experiences along the way.
Her backpacking style emphasized affordability and authentic local experiences. She traveled by public transport, stayed in hostels, and occasionally cooked her own meals, allowing her to travel on a modest budget while experiencing genuine local culture rather than tourist packages.
