Chiang Mai Hotpot Diner Finds Cockroach in Broth

A Chiang Mai diner discovered a cockroach in their hotpot broth, but the restaurant's offer of a 10% discount sparked backlash on social media over inadequate accountability and poor crisis management.

Chiang Mai Hotpot Diner Finds Cockroach in Broth
6 Aug Khaosod

A Facebook user in the Chiang Mai province group posted an account of finding a cockroach in the broth at a hotpot restaurant in Chiang Mai, triggering criticism over the establishment's food safety standards and crisis response. After discovering the insect in the soup pot, the customer informed staff, who apologized and offered a 10% discount on the meal. However, the customer argued that the core issue was not the discount amount but the lack of genuine accountability and meaningful communication from management, which would have been more important in rebuilding customer trust. The customer compared this incident to an experience at another restaurant where management fully refunded the bill and handled the situation more responsibly, suggesting that the hotpot restaurant's response fell short of consumer expectations. Following the post's spread on social media, numerous users commented expressing concerns about the restaurant's cleanliness standards and criticizing the 10% discount as inadequate for such a serious hygiene breach, calling instead for more comprehensive remedies and clearer communication in such cases. Meanwhile, some users attempted to identify the restaurant, though the original poster has not revealed the name or location of the establishment. To date, no statement has been issued by the restaurant mentioned in the complaint.

The body of Phaanuphong Muenthean, known as "Aum," a 26-year-old crew member who died when the cargo ship Muyurinary was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, arrived at his hometown in Ban Sai district, Sikhiu subdistrict, Surin province. Family members, relatives, community leaders, and villagers gathered to receive his body amid an atmosphere of grief and mourning. When rescue personnel brought his coffin to the front of his home, family and relatives wept with sorrow before his father lit incense and made an offering at the entrance. The coffin was then brought inside for a Buddhist ceremony requesting forgiveness and water blessing in place of the traditional bathing ritual.

Anuwat Phimphra, the village headman and a relative of Aum, revealed with a trembling voice that although devastated by what happened, the family was grateful he could return home. The family will hold a merit-making ceremony and his funeral on Sunday. Anuwat disclosed that Aum had aspired to join the Royal Thai Navy to serve his country, but that dream was cut short by this tragedy. He noted with great sorrow that Aum's body arrived home on the same day as fellow victim Sorachai Solo, as both died abroad in tragic circumstances. Their return home was a heartbreaking one, with no possibility of bringing them back to life.

A Norwegian man has been homeless in Nonthaburi for two years after thieves stole his passport, leaving him unable to return to Norway despite assistance from temple staff and the embassy.

Norwegian Man Homeless in Nonthaburi for Two Years
6 Aug Khaosod

A Norwegian man named Odd Stian Hesseberg, 44, has been living homeless in Nonthaburi Province for over two years after thieves stole his bag containing his passport and documents. He originally traveled to Thailand to find a female friend in Nakhon Sawan but was unable to contact her, and subsequently found himself unable to return home without identity papers.

According to temple staff, Hesseberg has been sleeping at Klong Kraeng Temple for about a year. Three months ago, the abbot arranged for a taxi to take him to the Norwegian Embassy to help facilitate his return home, but he returned to the temple and resumed his homeless lifestyle. Staff report he spends much of his time scavenging for food and asking locals for money, which he reportedly uses to buy 40-degree alcohol daily. When authorities attempt to locate him, he flees, making it difficult to assist him properly.

Temple staff and local residents wish to help him return to Norway, as his situation has become a burden on the community. The exact reasons for his continued homelessness despite attempts to help remain unclear, though some speculate he may have experienced relationship problems or other personal trauma. Without a passport and unable to communicate in Thai, Hesseberg remains trapped in his current situation.

Rescue workers from the Sawang Boonchai Foundation in Samut Songkhram Province mobilized twelve personnel and seven rescue vehicles on August 6, 2025, to transport the body of a 34-year-old woman weighing 250 kilograms from Somdej Phra Phutthaloetla Hospital to Wat Lad Peng temple, a distance of ten kilometers, for religious funeral rites.

Temple abbot Phra Kru Phisalsomutkij assigned assistant abbot Phra Kru Puladphon to prepare the facilities respectfully for the cremation ceremony. The temple had been contacted by village leaders from two communities requesting assistance, as the deceased's considerable weight made it difficult to find suitable venues and crematories. Wat Lad Peng responded by offering its facilities and services free of charge.

According to Thaworn Siang-On, an emergency medical technician with the Sawang Boonchai Foundation, the initial call reported a woman with breathing difficulty at a two-story wooden house. Upon arrival, rescuers found her face-down and weighing 250 kilograms, requiring an ambulance and six to seven personnel working carefully to move her downstairs to the hospital, where she later died. The subsequent transport to the temple required mobilizing twelve rescue workers and volunteers, though all team members remained committed to serving the community regardless of the difficulty.

Body of 29-Year-Old Found in Bangpakong River After Six-Hour Search

Rescue divers recovered the body of a 29-year-old man from the Bangpakong River in Chachoengsao after a six-hour search operation at 9 meters depth, with witnesses suggesting he may have jumped from a bridge.

Body of 29-Year-Old Found in Bangpakong River After Six-Hour Search
6 Aug Khaosod

Chachoengsao — After a six-hour search operation, rescue workers recovered the body of 29-year-old Thana (a pseudonym) who drowned in the Bangpakong River at a depth of 9 meters. His wife wept as she said her final goodbye, telling him they were finally going home together.

On August 6, Deputy Inspector Chonmanaj Riyapa from Muang Chachoengsao Police Station, accompanied by a forensic pathologist from Buddhasothorn Hospital, examined the area beneath the Baramee Sothorn Bridge. Rescue units had been searching continuously since around 11:30 a.m., using three motorboats equipped with sonar, drone teams surveying the water surface and riverbanks, and divers searching the incident area despite strong currents that made the operation extremely difficult.

Sonar eventually detected a suspicious object about 30 meters downstream from the bridge. Two divers descended to a depth of 9 meters and confirmed it was the missing person's body. Officers tied a rope around the deceased's ankle and pulled the body from the riverbed, placing it in a body bag before bringing it to shore for investigation and autopsy.

The victim's relatives revealed that Thana had recently moved from Songkhla Province to stay with his wife in Nakhon Nayok for three months. Three days earlier he had ridden his motorcycle to Chonburi to visit them and seemed cheerful, only mentioning homesickness and wanting to return to Songkhla. His relatives promised to arrange transport home.

This morning, however, he rode out from their house, leaving laundry in the washing machine and all his belongings behind. His wife, who had traveled from Nakhon Nayok, said he often expressed wanting to return home but she did not know why he made this decision, as he was normally a cheerful person.

When rescue workers placed the body in the rescue truck, his wife asked to open the tailgate and tearfully said her goodbye: "We're going home now. I'll make merit for you." A rescue volunteer named Siripong Sonchalerm, whose actions were captured on video, attempted CPR and explained that when he arrived at the scene, he tried to talk the man down while waiting for support, but the man did not respond and remained silent. When the man climbed over the concrete railing toward the steel railing, the volunteer tried to grab him and managed to hold his hand, but the man wrenched free and jumped into the river, leaving the volunteer deeply regretful.

The body has been temporarily placed at Buddhasothorn Hospital awaiting the victim's parents, who are traveling from Songkhla Province. Rescue units will then transport the body back to Songkhla for funeral rites.

Police Rescue 18-Year-Old Scam Victim Before Losing More Millions

Police rescued an 18-year-old in Hat Yai who had already lost 2 million baht to scammers posing as authorities, preventing criminals from extracting an additional 5 million baht before they fled.

Police Rescue 18-Year-Old Scam Victim Before Losing More Millions
6 Aug Khaosod

The Technology Crime Suppression Division, Region 9 Police, responded to a report from the father of an 18-year-old victim on August 6, stating that his son had been tricked by a call center gang into transferring 2 million baht and had become unreachable. Deputy Commander Wara Wechcchaphinan and Investigation Chief Maruit Ruengchintana ordered Deputy Investigation Commander Chakrawut Bunruang to locate and rescue the victim.

Police tracked the victim's location to Thian Chao Utit Road in Hat Yai, Songkhla. Finding his motorcycle near an apartment building, officers searched nearby units until they discovered him alone in a room, actively video-calling with the scammers. The moment police appeared on the phone screen, the criminals immediately hung up and deleted their Line account.

The victim explained that he had received a call from fraudsters claiming he was involved in a SIM card case and faced legal trouble. They demanded 2 million baht as "proof of innocence." He was told the money was for overseas education and convinced his parents to transfer the funds, which he then sent to the criminals in four installments of 500,000 baht each. The scammers subsequently ordered him to rent a room, cut contact with family and friends, and attempted to extract an additional 5 million baht.

Police arrived in time to prevent further losses. The victim has been safely located at the apartment near Central Plaza Hat Yai and is now being interviewed by investigators to file a formal complaint. Officers are expanding their investigation to pursue other members of the call center gang.
