CKPower Launches 5 MW Solar Project in Second Half
CKPower launched a 5 MW solar project with Bangkok Mass Transit System in September and expects strong second-half output from favorable water levels at its hydroelectric plants and the return of a cogeneration facility to full capacity.
CKPower, managed by Thanawat Treewisuthivet and among the region's largest renewable energy producers with a low carbon footprint, is advancing operations in the second half of 2025. The company has commenced commercial operation of a 5 megawatt solar power project in partnership with Bangkok Mass Transit System (BEM), effective September, to expand its renewable energy capacity and support clean energy adoption in Thailand's transport and infrastructure sectors.
Water conditions have been favorable through the first six months of 2025. Flow through the Sayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant ran 17.7% above the prior-year period, resulting in an 11.2% increase in electricity sales. CKPower expects supportive water levels to continue through the end of the year, particularly in the fourth quarter, with anticipated high discharge from upstream areas in China through November and possible additional releases in December.
The company monitors water conditions using its Hydrometeorological Monitoring and Forecasting System to optimize production planning. Nam Ngum 2 Hydroelectric Power Plant's usable reservoir stood at 32.53% capacity at end-July 2025, with room to absorb additional inflows during the monsoon season expected to bolster second-half output. Bangpakong Cogeneration (BIC), which completed maintenance in the first quarter, has returned to full production capacity and will support electricity generation in the second half.
Thanawat stated: "In the second half, CKPower benefits from multiple drivers: new solar capacity with BEM, continued supportive water conditions at Sayaburi, rising water levels at Nam Ngum 2, and BIC's return to normal operations. We will maximize the efficiency of our current assets while gradually expanding renewable capacity to sustain business growth and strengthen our long-term energy portfolio."
