Doctor Warns Solo Travelers of Silent Carbon Monoxide Danger
A doctor's viral TikTok warning highlights carbon monoxide poisoning risks for solo travelers, citing a 2023 incident where 12 guests died in a Georgian resort after a poorly placed generator filled their rooms with toxic gas.
On July 31, Dr. Benz Masterpiece posted a warning on TikTok (@dr.benz_masterpiece) about the often-overlooked danger of carbon monoxide poisoning affecting solo backpackers, especially those traveling in Europe. He referenced a tragic incident in Georgia on December 14, 2023, when 12 guests died simultaneously in separate rooms at a resort without any signs of injury. The guests had to use a portable generator for heat after losing power in cold weather, but the equipment was placed inside the building, causing toxic gas to accumulate. When staff checked in the morning, all 12 appeared to be peacefully asleep. Such incidents are surprisingly common, the doctor noted, citing U.S. research documenting 3,405 recorded cases. The most common sources of fatal carbon monoxide are heating devices and water heaters in hotels. The warning has become so well-known among solo backpackers worldwide that many now carry portable carbon monoxide detectors and use them in every accommodation. Dr. Benz recommends placing the detector on the bedside table before sleeping each night so it can alert occupants to any dangerous levels.
