Head-On EV Crash in Heavy Rain Kills Loan Business Owner
A head-on collision between two electric vehicles in heavy rain on the Mueang-Kamalasai highway in Kalasin province killed a 58-year-old quick-loan business owner from Roi Et. Two women in the other vehicle were injured and hospitalized. Police are investigating the cause, hindered by the lack of eyewitnesses due to the downpour.
At 2:40 PM on November 3, 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Pimchanok Phromthasarn, Deputy Superintendent of Investigation at Mueang Kalasin Police Station, received a report of a head-on collision between two cars on the Mueang-Kamalasai highway, just before the Rong Pla Doet Bridge in Ban Dong Sawang, Huai Pho Subdistrict, Mueang District, Kalasin Province. She inspected the scene along with rescue teams from the Huai Pho Subdistrict Administrative Organization, the Sawang Kalasin Rescue Foundation, and medical staff from Kalasin Hospital.
Heavy rain was falling and the road was wet and slippery. Two electric sedans, both bearing Roi Et license plates, had collided head-on and were severely mangled, with vehicle parts scattered across the road. The first vehicle was a BYD, license plate Kor Mor 8323 Roi Et; the second was a GWM, license plate 882 Roi Et.
Initial examination found the driver of the BYD trapped inside the wreckage. Rescuers used hydraulic cutters to extricate the body, but he was already deceased. He was later identified as 58-year-old Chaiwat, owner of a quick-loan business. Meanwhile, two female passengers in the GWM sustained injuries. Rescue workers provided first aid and rushed them to the hospital for urgent treatment; their conditions are initially reported as stable, and their identities are being verified.
According to staff at the deceased's company, Chaiwat had traveled from Roi Et and was driving toward Kalasin town center to sign loan documents for a client when the crash occurred.
However, investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Heavy rain at the time meant there were no eyewitnesses, only the sound of the impact was heard. Police must await forensic evidence, interview both injured parties, gather testimony from any nearby witnesses or passersby, and review dashcam footage before concluding the cause and filing any charges. Once the autopsy is complete, the body will be released to relatives for religious rites.
