A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, was felt across several southern Thai provinces, including Krabi, where cracks were found in several concrete houses built on hillsides. Authorities are investigating whether the cracks were caused by the earthquake, with no damage officially reported so far.

On 16 August, Krabi Provincial Public Relations Office chief Pathompong Kaewbandit said the Meteorological Department had reported an earthquake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 17:54 on 15 August.

The 6.8-magnitude quake was reportedly felt by residents in Songkhla, Trang, Krabi, Phuket and Satun provinces. The tremor did not meet the criteria for a Cell Broadcast alert, officials said.

In Krabi, the shaking was felt mainly in high-rise buildings, including Krabi Hospital and hotels in Ao Nang and Nong Thale subdistricts in Mueang Krabi district. No damage had been reported at the time of the statement.

Somsak Teppabut, village headman of Moo 3, Koh Kwang-Laem Pong in Nong Thale subdistrict, said he had begun inspecting homes in the area. Several concrete houses built on elevated ground in Laem Pong were found to have cracks in multiple locations. Officials are now examining the buildings to determine whether the cracks were caused by the latest earthquake.

Meanwhile, Thirasak Thongmat, head of the Krabi Office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said the National Disaster Warning Center had ordered authorities to closely monitor earthquake activity around the clock.

Provincial authorities are coordinating with local administrative organizations and relevant agencies to inspect areas and high-rise buildings where residents reported feeling the tremors, while ensuring public safety and reassuring residents.

On August 16, Chumphon Provincial Police responded to a collision at the Don Thai Ngam red-light intersection on New Cut Road, Moo 6, Bang Mak Subdistrict, Mueang Chumphon District. A pickup truck driven by Sak, 52, from Phato District was heading toward Chumphon town to take his wife Na, 44, and two female relatives to visit a patient at Chumphon Hospital. At the intersection, his truck collided with a Honda sedan driven by Phinyo, 46, from Mueang Chumphon, who was returning home with his family of three. The impact caused both vehicles to sustain severe damage. Na died at the scene, while four others—two women and two men—were injured and transported to hospital. The pickup truck's rear axle was dislodged from the impact.

Initial police investigation found that both drivers gave conflicting accounts of the accident, making it difficult to determine which party was at fault. Officers are collecting evidence and conducting witness interviews to establish the true cause. Investigators attempted to review security camera footage from Bang Mak Subdistrict Municipality to aid the investigation but found that two cameras in the area had been damaged by lightning and were non-operational.

Police are continuing their inquiry to determine whether either driver violated the traffic signal or acted negligently. The investigation will be forwarded for prosecution once evidence and witness statements are fully compiled.

Opposition May Debate Senate Freeze, But Must Present Evidence

Opposition may raise the Senate freeze in a no-confidence motion, but must present concrete evidence linking it to the current government rather than making vague political accusations, says a Democratic Party coalition coordinator.

Opposition May Debate Senate Freeze, But Must Present Evidence
2d ago Khaosod

Kraiwir Prishnanantakul, Democratic Party MP for Ang Thong and chairman of the government coalition coordination committee, said that while the opposition has the right to debate the Senate freeze issue in a no-confidence motion, any discussion must be clearly linked to the government and supported by concrete evidence rather than mere political allegations. He noted that although the freeze occurred before the current government took office, the incumbent administration must still address the problem, but the matter remains under review by the Election Commission, an independent body the government cannot interfere with.

"I believe if the opposition raises this issue, it is their right to do so, but they must present evidence and show how it relates to the government," Kraiwir said. "This is not a platform for vague accusations or political attacks. It requires substantive points linking to the prime minister or cabinet members, with facts not mere claims. If evidence exists, the government has a duty to clarify and respond clearly."

Regarding other topics the opposition plans to raise, Kraiwir said he agrees they should be fully investigated with evidence presented and questions answered. However, he emphasized that such scrutiny should be constructive and evidence-based, not a platform for floating charges. He stressed that the government welcomes accountability but that the most critical bills are those affecting ordinary citizens' costs—the government should focus on reducing public expenses and demonstrating tangible results for the people, not just responding to opposition questions.

Agriculture Department Urges Farmers to Use Microbes Instead of Burning Straw

Thailand's Department of Agricultural Extension is promoting microbial decomposition of rice straw as an alternative to burning, a method that reduces air pollution while improving soil fertility and cutting production costs within 5-7 days

Agriculture Department Urges Farmers to Use Microbes Instead of Burning Straw
2d ago Khaosod

The Department of Agricultural Extension is recommending that farmers stop burning rice straw and use microorganisms to decompose straw and stubble within 5-7 days, returning nutrients to the soil while reducing PM2.5 pollution, improving soil health, and lowering production costs. Many farmers across Thailand are shifting from "burn everything" to "return nutrients to soil" using microbial starter cultures that can decompose rice straw and stubble within 5-7 days before preparing fields for the next crop, offering another method to manage agricultural waste while reducing burning and restoring soil fertility.

Suparee Manmai, a senior agricultural scientist at the Department of Agricultural Extension's Production Factors Development Research Division, said the microbial decomposition method is an important alternative for managing agricultural waste because it not only reduces burning and PM2.5 problems but also increases soil organic matter, improves soil fertility and water retention, and lowers long-term production costs. The application method uses approximately 1-1.5 kilograms of microbial starter per hectare, scattered across the field after harvest; for heavy straw, mix with 5 kilograms of compost or urea fertilizer per hectare, or 3 kilograms for moderate straw, then allow microbes to work for 5-7 days before field preparation.

The Department of Agricultural Extension has rolled out a project to expand the use of microbial starter cultures for decomposing organic matter to reduce burning in agricultural areas nationwide. Results from field applications show clear benefits: Kraitong Luntaiyoh, head of a participatory organic agriculture learning center in Nakhon Sawan province and a model farmer, reported switching from burning straw to using microbial decomposition, opening his land as a learning center for other farmers. After trials in the 2568 rice season, straw and stubble decomposed as intended, soil became more crumbly with better moisture, and subsequent corn and sugarcane crops grew better with higher yields than traditional burning methods relying on chemical fertilizers, prompting many local farmers to stop burning and adopt microbes instead.

Manas Thupmekhahh, a farmer in Uthai Thani province who adopted the microbial method, found improved soil fertility, reduced fertilizer and pesticide costs, and increased yields from 600-700 kilograms per hectare to 800-1,000 kilograms per hectare. Similarly, farmers in Kamphaeng Phet who switched from burning stubble to microbial decomposition reported stronger rice plants, especially in root systems and tillering, with model farmer Rossukan Onuuthai developing her field as a demonstration plot to build confidence and expand results to other farmers. Another farmer, Wasana Srianyoo, applied the microbial culture to 20 hectares and found better plant growth, reduced insecticide spraying, lower fertilizer use, fewer weeds, and stronger rice plants compared to untreated fields.

Luxury Car Erupts in Flames After Overnight Charging

A luxury sedan caught fire while charging overnight in Pathum Thani Province on August 16, with firefighters containing the blaze to the vehicle's cabin within an hour. The owner suspects a hybrid battery malfunction, though no warning sign

Luxury Car Erupts in Flames After Overnight Charging
2d ago Khaosod

On August 16, the Khlong Sam Subdistrict Administration Organization's disaster prevention unit responded to a car fire at a two-story townhouse in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani Province. Two fire trucks and Subdistrict Chief Dr. Wirasakdi Hadda were dispatched to the scene.

The white sedan caught fire rapidly inside the cabin while parked in the townhouse parking area. Firefighters sprayed water to control the flames and prevent them from spreading to the house and surrounding areas, successfully containing the fire within approximately one hour. The driver's cabin area sustained complete fire damage.

Owner Phavatgul, 36, explained that he arrived home around 10 p.m. the previous evening and left the charging cable plugged in before going to bed. Around 8 a.m., a security guard rang the doorbell to alert him. When he came down and saw smoke rising from the vehicle, he quickly unplugged the charger and opened the car door. Heavy smoke then billowed out, as seen in video footage. He suspects the hybrid battery overheated and caught fire, but the exact cause remains unclear—whether from battery degradation or a system malfunction. Notably, no warning signal or error message appeared on the dashboard before the incident.

The owner considers himself fortunate that the fire did not spread severely; the damage is confined to the vehicle itself. The car is a used model purchased for approximately one million baht, which he has owned for about two years; accounting for the previous owner's use, the vehicle is estimated to be around four years old. He has already notified his insurance company, which has tier-one coverage and has made contact. He has not yet been able to reach the service center to investigate the cause and assess damage, as the incident occurred on a Sunday. Though hesitant about using the vehicle again, he will await the repair shop's assessment to determine if repairs and further use are possible.

The owner has maintained the car regularly, brought it in for annual inspections, and followed scheduled maintenance checks. He understood the vehicle should display error messages on the dashboard if hybrid system or related failures were detected, yet no warning appeared before the charging incident. The exact cause therefore remains uncertain.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — Two Buddhist monks were injured after their pickup truck was hit by another vehicle as they made a U-turn while returning to their temple after collecting alms in Pak Chong district.

Police were alerted at 09:00 to the crash on Mittraphap Road, between kilometres 45 and 46, on the inbound side toward Nakhon Ratchasima, in front of the Klang Dong Highway Maintenance Unit. Police, traffic officers, highway police and rescue teams from several local agencies rushed to the scene.

At the U-turn, officers found a white Nissan pickup bearing a sticker identifying a forest temple on its front windshield. The vehicle had been struck on its right side, veered off the road and crashed into a wooded area. Its Carryboy canopy had been torn off and was found on the road.

Two monks were found injured on the ground after being thrown from the vehicle. They were identified as Luang Pho Subin, 64, the driver, and Phra Phongphiphat, 47, who had been sitting in the rear canopy.

A short distance away, a white Toyota Vigo pickup fitted with a steel cage had crashed into a concrete median barrier, with one of its wheels lodged on the edge of the road. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Arthit Takan, and a male teenage passenger were also injured. Rescue workers provided first aid before taking the injured to Pak Chong Nana Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Khao Yai.

A preliminary police investigation found that Subin had driven the pickup from a forest temple early in the morning with Phongphiphat. They parked the vehicle and went out to collect alms. After finishing, the monks got back into the pickup to return to the temple. Phongphiphat was sitting in the rear Carryboy compartment.

As Subin began making a U-turn, the Toyota Vigo travelling behind them crashed heavily into the side of their vehicle. Both pickups lost control and were thrown in different directions, causing the two monks to be ejected from their truck.

Police said all injured parties were taken for medical treatment. Pol. Maj. Attaphon Thuekphranow, an investigating officer at Klang Dong Police Station, said officers had photographed the scene and arranged for both vehicles to be towed to the station for inspection.

Police will question both drivers once their injuries have improved and proceed with legal action based on the findings.

Temple Founder Defends Document, Criticizes Land Dispute Opponent

The man who drafted the petition to establish Wat Pa Anulyaram visited and encouraged the abbot, while criticizing a woman involved in the land dispute as unprofessional, speaking like a criminal, and seeking only to win. On August 16, 2025, at Wat Pa Anulyaram on Kalpapruks Road in Khon Kaen Municipality, Chaiyong Gongsri, 68, a former head of educational services at the Faculty of Medicine at Khon Kaen University, visited and encouraged Phra Kru Adunsaan Nithet, the abbot of Wat Pa Anulyaram. He was accompanied by monks and lay supporters from across the region who came to show support and closely follow updates on the temple land dispute. Chaiyong explained that in 1989 he began working at the university and purchased land in the Nong Waeng Tra Chu community to build a residence. After completing construction in 1992, he moved in, and by 1993 the community began expanding with more people settling in the area. At the site where Wat Pa Anulyaram now stands, there was only thick forest with no convenient road access. At that time, Intri, who served as the temple registrar, consulted with him about how to establish the temple. Chaiyong said he advised drafting the necessary documents to submit to relevant authorities in the proper sequence, typing the letter at his workplace and delivering it to the registrar to present for official temple establishment according to Department of Religion regulations. After considerable time, in April 1998, he learned that the Ministry of Education had announced the temple's establishment, as the temple showed him the official document which was later framed and displayed in the hall. Chaiyong further stated that the information provided by the woman in her media interviews was contradictory and inconsistent. He criticized her approach, saying she should speak with knowledge and professionalism rather than like a criminal seeking only to win. He emphasized that the law is clear from the beginning: once land is donated to the temple, it immediately becomes temple property. This is different from a commercial purchase, because donated land immediately becomes monastic property under Buddhist law.
