Lawyer Draws Gun After Road Rage Chase, Injured in Struggle

Police in Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi, responded on September 6 at 6 p.m. to a report of gunfire in Soi Suchawadi. Officers found two injured men: Akkarat, 29, a motorcycle rider with a wound to his left index finger, and Hirun, 70, a lawyer, with a severe head laceration and bleeding. The lawyer was taken to Bang Kruai Hospital.
Investigation revealed that Akkarat was delivering a passenger when the lawyer in a black Mercedes-Benz, believing he had been cut off, began honking and chasing him. When both vehicles stopped, an argument ensued. The lawyer returned to his car, retrieved a gun, and pointed it at Akkarat. The rider charged forward to wrestle the weapon away. During the struggle, the gun discharged once, striking Akkarat's finger. Akkarat successfully disarmed the lawyer and handed the gun to a bystander, who called police.
Akkarat told investigators he had nodded apologetically when the lawyer first approached. He said the lawyer threatened him, asked "Are you going to hit me?" then retrieved a cane from the car before walking to the trunk. Akkarat followed instinctively and saw the lawyer draw the gun. Acting on impulse, Akkarat tackled him, and both fell. The gun fired, striking Akkarat's finger. The lawyer's head wound was from hitting the ground, not from a gunshot.
Forensic officers from Nonthaburi examined the weapon, a 9 mm short-barrel pistol with 4 rounds in the magazine, 2 outside, and one spent casing. The lawyer was sent for medical treatment and will be questioned and charged.
