Drug-Dealing Couple With HIV Arrested Near Bang Yai District Office
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, Bang Yai District Chief Surachai Kotrbuttadee ordered security personnel to raid a four-story rental room located just 50 meters from the Bang Yai District Office in Nonthaburi Province. The operation followed a tip-off that an LGBTQ couple was running a daily rental room at 350 baht per day while illegally distributing ice and methamphetamine pills. After an undercover purchase, authorities arrested Khrongphop, 51, and Anuwat, 40, both from Nonthaburi Province, along with drugs and paraphernalia including 0.65 grams of ice, two methamphetamine pills, one syringe filled with saline and ice, 13 needles, and seven 5-milliliter bottles of saline solution.

Both suspects disclosed they are HIV-positive, with Khrongphop infected for nearly 20 years and Anuwat for two years. Under interrogation, Khrongphop admitted to being both the dealer and owner of the drugs, while Anuwat claimed to be only a user. Khrongphop sold ice-saline mixtures in syringes for 300 baht each exclusively to members of his LINE group, purchasing supplies from regular pharmacies. He used proceeds from drug sales to gamble on online slots and to buy more methamphetamine and ice for resale.

The deputy district chief expressed concern that Khrongphop's practice of filling customer-supplied syringes made it impossible to verify whether needles had been previously used, creating a serious HIV transmission risk. He urged anyone who purchased drugs from Khrongphop to undergo thorough blood testing for their own safety. Khrongphop has a prior drug trafficking conviction from Ubon Ratchathani in April 2025. Authorities charged Khrongphop with three offenses: attempting to distribute Category 1 drugs (ice) without permission, possession of drugs, and drug use. Anuwat faces a single charge of drug use. Both are in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Geologists To Survey Seven Sinkholes In Khon Kaen

Geologists To Survey Seven Sinkholes In Khon Kaen
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, in sugarcane and rice paddy areas west of Ban Wang Charoen village, Moo 2, Huai Mueang subdistrict, Phu Pha Man district, Khon Kaen province, social media posts revealed images of seven large sinkholes, causing alarm and widespread sharing of opinions.

Komphetch Krosing, chief of Huai Mueang subdistrict administration, stated that the ground collapses are not new but have been occurring for approximately 10 years since 2015 and continuing to the present. When the incidents first occurred, relevant agencies, particularly geologists, inspected the area and determined that the zone is limestone terrain susceptible to subsidence. Warning signs before collapse take various forms: some areas show slight settling, some create depressions, and some emit air gusts resembling boiling water before the ground gives way. This situation has alarmed local farmers and gardeners working the fields, as they cannot predict when the ground will collapse. However, no reports have surfaced of anyone falling into the holes or suffering injuries from the incidents. Residents can only take precautions themselves.

Over the past 10 years, authorities have coordinated with geologists and relevant agencies to investigate the causes, but still await answers from specialist agencies. Each time a collapse occurs, a nearby limestone mill brings crushed stone to fill the holes and help residents, but many refilled areas subside again shortly afterward. Some locations have experienced recurrence within just one year.

Huai Mueang subdistrict administration lacks sufficient capacity to address such a large-scale problem, so it coordinated with the limestone mill for assistance. The mill fills holes with crushed stone where they appear, but agricultural land and people's livelihoods are lost, creating hardship for residents. The next course of action is to coordinate with specialized geologists equipped with inspection tools to identify the cause and discuss comprehensive, sustainable solutions with multiple agencies.

Nunsil, 68, a landowner, revealed that she owns two agricultural plots. The first plot contains 3 rai of rice paddy with one collapsing hole that began subsiding on August 3 and had expanded significantly by the morning of August 4, accompanied by sounds of soil cracking. Her second plot spans 9 rai of sugarcane with five large sinkholes, which she fears to inspect for risk of falling in. After discovering the holes, she was shocked but still needed to complete harvesting for her livelihood.

Local residents believe the cause stems from limestone quarrying operations and groundwater extraction that weakened the soil, and are seeking assistance and compensation from relevant authorities, as the affected areas can no longer be farmed. Tomorrow, August 5, geological department officials will conduct another site inspection to identify the cause and discuss solutions with relevant agencies.

Matichon, BAAC Donate Quality Books to 10 Border Police Schools
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Matichon Public Company Limited's headquarters, executives from Matichon and the Government Housing Bank (BAAC) held a ceremony to present support for the "The Blooming Through Reading" project, designed to promote reading and support children and youth access to knowledge. The initiative delivers quality books to libraries and educational institutions in underserved areas affected by flooding, as well as border patrol police schools in remote areas nationwide.

Matichon leadership, headed by Managing Director Prapot Bunpan, alongside BAAC executives led by Managing Director Mahattana Ampornpisit, participated in the handover. Mahattana emphasized that books are fundamental to learning and serve as tools to "equip youth intellectually." He noted that reading not only imparts knowledge but also broadens perspectives, inspires, and promotes continuous learning alongside critical thinking and data-driven decision-making—skills essential for life in a rapidly changing world. Books also cultivate reading habits, foster imagination and creativity, and instill good values and morality as foundations for quality development.

"BAAC prioritizes supporting access to quality books for children and youth, especially those in remote or resource-poor areas, so all have the opportunity to fully develop their potential and become important contributors to the nation's future development," Mahattana said.

The BAAC has committed 100,000 baht to provide quality books to 10 border patrol police schools under the project. The collaboration aims to enrich learning resources for disadvantaged children and youth, reduce disparities in book access caused by economic and geographic constraints, and promote an inclusive learning society where all can access knowledge equally. Matichon and the Tr. Kovit Worrapipat Foundation launched the initiative in 2026.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Apologizes, Disciplines Security Over Chinese Fan Incident
4 Aug Khaosod

Suvarnabhumi Airport has apologized and disciplined security personnel for inappropriate behavior while responding to a disturbance caused by Chinese fans of a Chinese artist, resulting in 22 passengers being denied boarding by Thai Airways. The airport acknowledged the officers' misconduct during the incident and confirmed disciplinary measures have been imposed.

On July 29 at 11 p.m., a group of fans traveling on Thai Airways Flight TG 674 to Beijing followed the Chinese artist they were traveling with into the passenger lounge, where they were not authorized to be. When Thai Airways staff requested security assistance to control the situation, officers asked the fans to leave the lounge. The fans continued to follow the artist and caused further disruptions through the holding area and to the aircraft boarding bridge.

When the artist boarded the aircraft, Thai Airways temporarily closed the door to prevent the remaining unauthorized fans from entering. Security officers then pushed the fan group back into the holding area. Ultimately, Thai Airways denied boarding to all 22 fans due to their failure to comply with airline safety procedures and regulations. The airline feared they would cause further disturbances in-flight that could not be controlled. Twelve fans agreed to retrieve their luggage, while ten refused and expressed dissatisfaction, behaving provocatively toward staff during the situation.

Although the airport acknowledged that security's response was intended to protect passenger safety and flight operations, it admitted that some officers displayed inappropriate behavior and expressions that fell short of service standards and airport regulations. The head of security has ordered disciplinary proceedings to be initiated.

Taiwan Reaffirms Commitment as Trusted Ally of Thailand
4 Aug Khaosod

Taiwan has reaffirmed its role as a reliable partner committed to law and principle, with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand continuing to strengthen cooperation and friendship between Taiwanese and Thai people. The office confirmed that Taiwan's long-standing partnership and close collaboration with Thailand remains unchanged, as evidenced by Taiwan's recent extension of visa-exemption privileges for Thai travelers for another year and its ongoing commitment to protecting Thai workers' rights.

Peter Lan, Taiwan's government representative, stated that Taiwanese and Thai people share similar qualities of friendliness, family values, and diligence, and both sides demonstrate flexibility and mutual understanding in managing their relationship amid geopolitical challenges. Food culture serves as another bridge between the peoples, with Taiwan's bubble tea extremely popular in Thailand while Thai cuisine is widely appreciated in Taiwan, becoming part of daily life for both communities and creating a sense of home comfort.

Cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Thailand are diverse and ongoing. Thai films and series such as The Devil's Deal, The Believers, and Bad Genius, along with global artist Lisa, continue to enjoy popularity in Taiwan. Similarly, films by Taiwanese director Ang Lee and classic songs by Teresa Teng, which have been familiar to Thai people for decades, reflect the cultural connections and charm between Taiwan and Thailand.

Beyond cultural ties, Taiwan-Thailand economic and trade cooperation has developed over more than 60 years on solid foundations of mutual trust. Lan noted that Taiwan is currently Thailand's fourth-largest trading partner and the sixth-largest source of foreign direct investment. Taiwan is ready to share knowledge and experience based on mutual respect to support Thailand's development as a semiconductor industry hub in Southeast Asia.

Giant Teak Log Defies Crane Lifts; Ritual Blessing Planned

A massive teak log that mysteriously floated upstream into a Samut Songkhram village canal twice defeated crane attempts to lift it, prompting residents to schedule a blessing ceremony for the seemingly sentient timber.

Giant Teak Log Defies Crane Lifts; Ritual Blessing Planned
4 Aug Khaosod

A giant teak log floating upstream into Chui Canal in Moo 4, Bang Ja Krang subdistrict, Muang district, Samut Songkhram, has stirred excitement throughout the village after residents discovered the unusual timber near their boat dock. When village headman Supap Khongraksaa and Sirasophorn Fooklin, a subdistrict administrator, brought in a crane to lift the log, the machine failed twice to raise it despite attempts to add weight with a pickup truck, prompting them to halt operations out of safety concerns.

After consulting with local spiritual leaders, the community decided to hold a formal blessing ceremony on Thursday, August 6, at 9 a.m.—coinciding with Teacher's Day, considered an auspicious date. A new crane and ritual offerings will be brought to the village shrine at the mouth of Chui Canal, a sacred site revered by residents. Headman Supap recalled her initial disbelief upon hearing the discovery, noting the log's enormous girth—so thick that three or four people could barely encircle it. She explained that when residents asked the spirit of the log to follow them to the village, it began floating upstream behind their boat in a remarkable fashion.

The incident has sparked fascination with numerical coincidences: the rescue boat's registration is number 07, and when firecrackers were lit to call upon the spirit, the tail number that emerged was 70—the reverse sequence. Administrator Sirasophorn added that the crane operator, experienced with heavy lifts, was shocked by the wood's refusal to budge, and that the log appeared to follow villagers' boats of its own accord, as though determined to join the community. The case has been widely viewed as extraordinary.

Ore Furnace Explodes; Seven Workers Hurt, Company Fails to Report
4 Aug Khaosod

At 9:00 a.m. on August 4, 2026, Huay Krachao Police Station in Kanchanaburi received notification from Huay Krachao Hospital that seven workers had been injured by an ore furnace explosion and were brought in for treatment, later transferred to Phahon Yothin Hospital. The injured workers—five Burmese nationals, one Thai, and one Chinese national aged 58—were employees of a tin smelting factory located in Moo 14, Huay Krachao Subdistrict, Huay Krachao District, Kanchanaburi.

The explosion occurred around 1:50 a.m. when heat accumulated inside the furnace, causing it to rupture with violent force inside the factory. However, the company failed to report the incident to police; had the hospital not alerted authorities, they would never have known. Police discovered extensive blast damage throughout the facility and secured the scene pending investigation by specialists and forensic experts.

District officials, provincial industrial officers, and relevant agencies subsequently inspected the site and assessed the structural damage for safety. Investigators collected evidence, interviewed witnesses, and coordinated with industrial safety authorities to determine the cause of the explosion and verify the company's legal compliance. They also investigated why the company failed to report the incident immediately to allow police to respond promptly.

Bangkok Urges Public to Stop Food Handouts on Ratchadamnoen Road

Bangkok authorities have banned public food handouts on Ratchadamnoen Klang Road after homeless gatherings sparked violence and safety concerns, directing donors to use official shelters instead.

Bangkok Urges Public to Stop Food Handouts on Ratchadamnoen Road
4 Aug Khaosod

Bangkok authorities have asked the public to stop distributing free food along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, saying the practice has contributed to growing gatherings of homeless people following recent fights that raised public safety concerns.

The measure took effect on Tuesday after officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), police and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security inspected the area.

Gen. Niphat Thonglek, chief adviser to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, said food donations made with good intentions had become a key factor drawing homeless people to the area to wait for handouts. He said the gatherings had led to problems including disorder, littering, blocked walkways, violent altercations and safety concerns for residents and visitors.

Authorities have designated the area as a surveillance zone and will increase patrols by municipal officers and police, particularly from 18:00 until the following morning, when homeless people typically begin gathering. Mobile patrol units will also monitor the area.

The BMA will install signs informing the public of regulations under the Public Cleanliness and Orderliness Act and enforce the law against violations. It is also urging residents and charitable groups not to stop their vehicles to distribute food along Ratchadamnoen Klang Road until further notice.

Niphat said the city's objective was not to drive homeless people away without support but to encourage them to use Baan Imjai, a BMA shelter that provides accommodation, meals and access to social services. He described Ratchadamnoen Road as "the country's living room" and said it should remain clean, orderly and safe for the public, tourists and young people.

Pol. Gen. Adis Ngamjitsuksri, another adviser to the Bangkok governor, urged donors to channel food assistance through Baan Imjai or one of the Food Banks operated by Bangkok's 50 district offices. He said the system would ensure food reached those in need while reducing homeless gatherings in public spaces and improving safety for pedestrians and road users.

Upon seeing the officials, the man immediately abandoned the motorcycle and fled across into Cambodia. Officers were unable to pursue and apprehend him but successfully seized the vehicle.

Investigation revealed the bike to be a gray Honda ADV 350 with no license plate and no documentation of ownership. A search of the storage compartment found no illegal items or vehicle documents. After transfer to investigators at Khlong Nom Sai Police Station, a background check determined the motorcycle had been reported stolen from Ban Chang, Rayong. Authorities contacted the owner, who is scheduled to retrieve the vehicle on the morning of August 5, 2025.
