Bilateral exchange between Taiwan and Thailand has deepened and become increasingly warm, with growing numbers of visitors traveling between the countries each year, reflecting strong friendship and encouraging Thai tourists to discover Taiwan's charms.

Taiwan's government has announced a one-year extension of its visa-exemption trial for Thai passport holders, valid from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. Thai citizens can now enter Taiwan without a visa and stay for up to 14 days, making travel even more convenient.

Taiwan introduced the visa-exemption measure for Thai tourists in 2016, and over the past decade it has proven highly successful, facilitating travel significantly and encouraging frequent exchanges between both peoples. In 2024 and 2025, over one million Taiwanese visited Thailand, while more than 500,000 Thai tourists visited Taiwan—the highest figures in years.

Peter Luan, Taiwan's government representative in Thailand, stated that Taiwan offers diverse tourism attractions with rich cultural heritage and diverse business opportunities in various industries. The country also features convenient and safe tourism facilities recognized globally, along with delicious cuisine, beautiful natural scenery year-round, and fascinating history and culture that draw Thai visitors back repeatedly.

With the visa-exemption measure continuing in effect, Taiwan's Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand invites Thai citizens to visit Taiwan and experience the beauty blending city, mountains, and sea, enjoy Taiwanese warmth and hospitality, and create memorable travel experiences. Both governments will continue promoting cooperation and exchange with Thailand across multiple sectors.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the results of bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Shanghai on July 17, revealing that Xi has offered to facilitate dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia to restore relations. During discussions emphasizing the strong bond between the two countries, China confirmed its commitment to ongoing support and cooperation with Thailand across security, economics, technology transfer, and personnel training.

A key topic addressed regional relationships and security concerns. Xi acknowledged neighboring country relations and offered to mediate efforts to restore Thai-Cambodian ties and find joint solutions. Thailand reiterated its position that it does not seek conflict but must protect sovereignty and public safety.

Anuthin addressed concerns about China's tank deliveries to Cambodia, explaining that China understood Thai government and public worries. He noted the purchase order predated recent conflict, but China had delayed deliveries during the fighting. China assured that under agreed conditions, the weapons will not be used to harm Thailand.

Anuthin also confirmed that China offered to host the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation framework meeting—originally to be co-chaired by Thailand—to avoid inconvenience for participating states, particularly Cambodia. On a ceremonial note, Anutin conveyed a royal invitation from Thailand's King inviting President Xi and his wife on an official State Visit, which Xi accepted in principle pending scheduling alignment.

The Central Local Government Employee Examination Committee confirmed it can disqualify 5,924 candidates for violations, though disqualified applicants can appeal to administrative court and the revised list requires provincial approval bef

Local Government Exam Board Confirms Authority to Disqualify 5,924 Candidates
3h ago Khaosod

Wanchai Janprom, chairman of the Central Local Government Employee Examination Committee (CGEC), defended the committee's authority to revoke appointments, citing administrative procedure law. When data or orders contain defects or incompleteness, the issuing official must correct them. Wanchai clarified that while this matter is finalized administratively, rights are not entirely exhausted—the revised list must still be forwarded to provincial local government personnel committees for approval before local authorities can issue termination orders. When asked whether disqualified candidates can petition administrative court, Wanchai confirmed they may do so through an appeals process under administrative law, and if unsatisfied, can file suit. However, whether the court grants temporary protection is at the court's discretion. Regarding contingency plans for potential court challenges, Wanchai noted that the Deputy Secretary-General of the Interior Ministry has instructed the local government promotion department's legal team to prepare arguments for administrative court. Wanchai disclosed that of 438,277 applicants, 279,949 sat the exam; 55,753 passed and were listed; 14,988 were appointed across three cohorts; but 5,924 were found to have committed violations, leaving 49,829 on the final list. Next week, the revocation and new appointment lists will be signed and transmitted to provincial personnel committees and local authorities for termination of the 5,924 misconduct cases. The CGEC will also determine whether newly appointed candidates remain in their current assignments or select new positions, as score rankings may shift. However, the 5,924 names cannot be publicly disclosed due to PDPA privacy law.

South Thailand Exam Scores Show Highest Irregularities; 5,924 Disqualified

South Thailand's local government employee exam disqualified 5,924 candidates due to score irregularities, the highest number in the region, after the civil service committee completed its verification process.

South Thailand Exam Scores Show Highest Irregularities; 5,924 Disqualified
3h ago Khaosod

The Southern region has recorded the most significant irregularities in local government employee examination scores. The Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry announced that next week will mark the conclusion of the process after the central civil service examination committee voted to disqualify 5,924 candidates. He dismissed rumors of manipulation, stating that detailed verification was completed overnight before today's meeting.

Of approximately 279,000 test-takers from over 400,000 applicants, 5,924 showed score anomalies that were corrected. The committee voted to cancel the previous exam results and will issue a new certified list. The Permanent Secretary emphasized this is not a new examination but a re-tallying of existing correct scores, with the 5,924 irregularities removed and reranked. Early verification showed significant anomalies in the initial phase, with some scattered throughout later entries.

When asked about cross-referencing the new list with the National Anti-Corruption Commission's data, the Permanent Secretary noted that timestamps on answer sheets and result sheets were recorded within 4 minutes of the exam, providing clear chronological records. Regarding the committee's authority to disqualify candidates, he confirmed that the agency responsible for approving results has the authority to correct its own decisions when data is found to be inaccurate.

The official stated that today's decision represents completion of the entire verification process, not a partial review, addressing public expectations. He clarified that while there were minor differences of opinion on data presentation, all committee members unanimously agreed to disqualify all 5,924 problematic candidates. Regarding rumors of efforts to remove disqualified candidates from misconduct records, he stated such maneuvering is now impossible as the process is complete.

Vietnamese Drug Gang Uses Thailand Route to Ship Ice to Tokyo
3h ago Khaosod

On July 17, National Police Commissioner General Siam Bunyasombun announced the expansion of a narcotics trafficking investigation involving crystal methamphetamine hidden inside tamarind paste containers bound for Japan. The investigation began on July 13 when a courier delivering the package discovered suspicious items of unusual weight and turned the container over to police. Testing confirmed the container held approximately 2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine concealed in six foil-wrapped rocks.

Deep investigation revealed the operation is run by a Vietnamese drug trafficking gang with a ringleader based in Hanoi who issues orders through a Facebook account, hiring riders to collect drugs from a Vietnamese safe house in Thailand and pass them to Thai couriers for delivery abroad. Police identified that a bank account belonging to 50-year-old Somphong from Sakon Nakhon was used to receive and transfer funds, with rotating Vietnamese operatives withdrawing cash in amounts of 20,000 to 50,000 baht before returning immediately to Vietnam to avoid arrest. Authorities believe more than four people are involved.

Police have issued arrest warrants for four suspects: one Thai national, Somphong, and three Vietnamese nationals who handled finances and managed the Facebook account. Somphong's girlfriend is believed to have knowledge of the operation but has not yet been charged; police are continuing to pursue her. One of the three Vietnamese suspects has already fled the country, while immigration authorities are closely monitoring the others.

The suspects attempted to conceal their activities by using different courier strategies and frequently changing tactics, including hiding drugs inside food products or seasoning packets by carefully cutting open the packaging and resealing it. Couriers were paid 450 baht per kilogram, a standard rate. The final destination is Tokyo, Japan, where Thai nationals receive the shipments and distribute them in stages. Police have coordinated with the Japanese Embassy to investigate further and are tracing the original source of the drugs and all financial flows, suspecting the network may be involved in other illegal activities beyond drug trafficking.

On July 17, Thanachoat Rungthipanont, deputy director-general of the Comptroller General's Department, announced that the Cabinet has approved the 2026 State Welfare Registration Program. Existing cardholders from the 2022 program who qualified for 2026 benefits can begin using their benefits from August 1 (5 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily), while new applicants must wait until October 1.

Eligible beneficiaries can access benefits through two methods: the Paotang mobile application (G Wallet) for smartphone users, or their national ID card with PIN code verification for those without smartphones. Both methods require facial recognition scanning at participating merchants or agencies. The program provides monthly allowances of 300 baht for essential goods, 80 baht every three months for cooking gas, and 75 baht for public transportation.

New applicants and those undergoing benefit review must complete identity verification (e-KYC) within 180 days through either the Paotang app or one of five designated banks: Krung Thai Bank, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, Government Savings Bank, Government Housing Bank, and Islamic Bank of Thailand. Identity verification must be completed at registration centers, and those wishing to delegate authority must also verify in person at these centers.

Apsorn Holding Launches 4 Projects Worth 3.16 Billion Baht

Apsorn Holding Launches 4 Projects Worth 3.16 Billion Baht
4h ago Khaosod

Apsorn Holding expects the real estate market to face ongoing headwinds in the second half of the year, with secondhand homes now commanding 67% of market share compared to just 33% for new properties. The company is launching four new projects worth 3.158 billion baht and expanding into international schools, community malls, and secondhand home operations, targeting 400 million baht in annual recurring revenue. Akkadate Udomsirithammrong, COO of Apsorn Holding, noted that overall residential transfers nationwide in Q1 2025 reached approximately 72,000 units, showing year-on-year growth but still trailing 2023 levels by about 20%.

Secondhand homes have overtaken new properties as market dynamics shift. Gross profit margins for listed property firms have compressed from 35-36% to just 28%, forcing companies to tighten operational expenses. Chiang Mai's recovery lags the national average, though new-home sales represent only 25% of that market, indicating fiercer competition. Foreign buyer demographics in Chiang Mai have shifted significantly, with Chinese buyers declining from 70-90% to roughly 50%, while American and Myanmar buyers increase due to new embassy expansion and direct flight routes.

In Phuket, Apsorn is developing condominiums starting at 70,000-80,000 baht per square meter under the "Arise Vibe Phuket" project valued at 1.115 billion baht, with 78% already sold; 40% of buyers are foreigners paying 50% downpayments. Koh Samui remains an emerging market with strong condo transfer growth of roughly 80% over two years, prompting the company to develop the "D Astra Samui" project on land opposite Anantara Bophut. The company plans to launch four new projects totaling 3.158 billion baht in the second half, including three condominium projects and one horizontal development.

Pond Denies Donation Fraud Claims, Pledges Action Over Words

Pond Denies Donation Fraud Claims, Pledges Action Over Words
4h ago Khaosod

On July 17 at the Maleenont Building, Pond Chakrakrisna gave an extensive interview to address allegations of misappropriated charitable donations. He firmly denied the claims, arguing that the financial documents presented were AI-generated attacks against him. He stated that association treasurer Karnchai had reviewed the bank statement showing only 80 million baht in funds, far below the alleged 200 million, and questioned where that figure came from.

Pond detailed the association's legitimate expenses: handling approximately 10,000 cases annually at 5,000 baht per case equals 50 million baht alone, plus vehicle maintenance, fuel, and assistance to bereaved families. The association also pays roughly 10 employees, with the highest salary not exceeding 9,000 baht, averaging 100,000 baht monthly.

Regarding the 30,000-baht transfers, Pond explained this follows association rules allowing such withdrawals for managing operational costs. While he initially used his wife's account as a conduit due to the association account lacking banking app and card access, he has now switched to the association president's account per a meeting resolution.

Pond acknowledged wrongly obtaining the list of 18 complainants from officials to verify if they were defaming him—something he shouldn't have done. Regarding Nayana, he revealed he once intended to buy her property to build a sacred statue but abandoned the purchase after she allegedly went back on a price-reduction promise, leading him to demolish the structure.

Concerning the land registered under his mother's name, Pond explained the broker claimed the owner was his relative and worried about tax implications if transferred to the association, so he requested individual registration first with later transfer to the association. He admitted lacking legal knowledge and didn't consult a lawyer.

Pond clarified his income sources: previously from creating and selling amulets, now from product reviews on Facebook, tiktok sales, and product endorsements. The free nose surgery allegation he flatly denied—the clinic performed it for free in exchange for influencer reviews. On the lottery ticket controversy, he explained he borrowed lottery tickets from someone who won first prize to photograph for content, noting in comments that they belonged to someone else.

Pond concluded by saying if society accepts his explanation, his actions going forward will serve as proof of his integrity.

Election Commission Voids Low Performance Review, Allows Secretary to Serve Full Term

The Election Commission voted to overturn a failing performance review of Secretary Sawang Boonmee by the previous commission, allowing him to complete his five-year term ending March 2570.

Election Commission Voids Low Performance Review, Allows Secretary to Serve Full Term
4h ago Khaosod

On July 17, 2569, the Election Commission announced a 5-2 vote on July 15 to overturn the performance evaluation of Secretary Sawang Boonmee for fiscal year 2568, which had been conducted by the previous commission chaired by Itthiphon Boonprakong. Under the new decision, the current commission will conduct its own assessment, effectively allowing Sawang to remain in his position.

The dispute originated when Itthiphon's commission rated Sawang's performance below the mandatory 60 percent threshold, a score that would have required his dismissal under contract terms. However, the matter was never formally brought to a full commission vote before the previous leadership's term expired. When the new commission took office and the low evaluation became public, questions arose about which commission body held the authority to assess the secretary's work.

The current commission consulted the Office of the Legal Counsel and an advisory panel chaired by former EC president Suphachai Somcharoen. The legal advisors concluded that the sitting commission—as specified in the employment contract—holds evaluation authority, citing precedent that previous secretaries were assessed by the commission in office at the time of review. On July 15, the full commission voted to invalidate the earlier evaluation.

Reports indicate that one commissioner who previously argued the four new members lacked sufficient working history to fairly rate Sawang reversed his position this time. The commission's decision is expected to allow Sawang to complete his five-year term without further obstacles, ending on March 31, 2570.

Fire Survivor Crawled Through Heat to Escape Ladprao Bar
4h ago Khaosod

On July 17, a fire survivor from the Ladprao beer hall gave a detailed account to investigators at Phahonyothin police station after his hospital discharge, describing his desperate escape through smoke and flames. He urged all visitors to entertainment venues to locate and memorize emergency exits upon arrival.

The survivor explained he was a regular customer who had come with three friends that evening and was seated near the bathroom by the corridor, with his back to the stage. He and his group initially did not notice any irregularities or the fire starting near the stage area. Panicked shouts about the fire prompted him and his friends to rush toward the rear exit, but many tourists were simultaneously fleeing to the same narrow corridor, creating chaos and bottlenecks that forced everyone into a single-file evacuation.

The critical moment came when the person at the front tried to open the rear door, and a massive wave of flames and intense heat suddenly surged into the building. The survivor, realizing the danger, dropped to the ground and crawled along the floor to avoid the high-rising smoke and flames, eventually escaping with his life.

He sustained first-degree burns on his arms, neck, and face, plus severe bruising to his legs from crawling forcefully across the floor during his escape. His two companions also suffered similar burn blisters and bruises.

The survivor considered himself fortunate that quick decision-making allowed him to exit rapidly and warned the public that upon entering any entertainment venue, the first priority should be to note the locations of all exit doors and emergency exit signs. Having a clear evacuation route in mind can be life-saving when an unexpected emergency occurs.
