Mass Fish Die-Off in Mao River; Poisoning Suspected

Chiang Mai – On August 17, numerous fish of various species were found floating dead throughout the Mao River in Pong Nam Ron subdistrict, Fang district, Chiang Mai province. Local residents rushed to collect the fish by the sackful for consumption and sale. Sithichai Pandee, a member of the Pong Nam Ron subdistrict administration representing Village 3, revealed that fish of all types showed signs of intoxication and were dying in large numbers, particularly in the areas around the weir at Ban Hua Fai and near Ban Mon Pin Nuea. Officials from Fang district, fisheries, village leaders, local water authority, and Fang police investigated and found the fish were in spawning condition with full roe, as the breeding season was approaching. These are local fish species that the community has been conserving. Upon examination, the gills of dead fish showed dark discoloration, leading to a preliminary assessment that the fish were exposed to concentrated toxins. Given agricultural and orange orchard activities upstream, authorities collected dead fish for further laboratory analysis. Mass fish die-offs in the Mao River have occurred before, most recently in 2566 (2023). After a two-year gap, fish populations had recovered and the ecosystem seemed stable, making this new die-off particularly unfortunate. Residents have called on authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible. The Pong Nam Ron subdistrict administration has issued public announcements warning residents not to consume or sell the fish, as they died under unnatural circumstances and may pose health risks to consumers.

A 56-year-old woman died and two others were injured when a motorcycle she was riding on collided with a trailer truck and a private car at 1 p.m. on August 17, 2025, on Ratcharotchak Road near Thao Suranari Shrine in Samroong Klang subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province.

At the scene, police found a damaged black-and-blue Honda PCX motorcycle registered in Bangkok, a red Suzuki Swift with damage to the front bumper also registered in Bangkok, and a trailer truck registered in Rayong. The victim, Ms. Duan, 56, had asked to ride on the motorcycle to go to a nearby market located about 50 meters away but was struck before reaching it. One male and one female passenger were also injured. Rescue workers and paramedics provided assistance and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to investigations, the woman had hitched a ride on the motorcycle to head to the market, which was only 50 meters from the collision point. A witness, 46-year-old Ms. Kanikar, reported hearing a crash sound and finding the victim lying on the road with the trailer truck's wheel pressing into her leg. She stated the motorcycle had emerged from a postal subdistrict soi and the victim appeared to have struck her leg upon falling before being struck by the trailer.

The trailer truck driver stated he was driving straight when he noticed the motorcycle emerging from the soi with a sedan parked nearby. He slowed down, thinking the motorcycle would stop, but it gradually moved to the left and suddenly cut in front of the trailer truck at very close range. He was unable to brake in time, resulting in the collision.

Police are currently investigating the scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing closed-circuit television footage to determine the exact sequence and cause of the accident before proceeding with legal action.

Consumer Protection Agency Orders Airline Investigation Over Overbooking

The Consumer Protection Commission is investigating an airline that overbooked a domestic flight by selling 191 tickets for 189 seats, leaving a passenger stranded despite advance payment for seat selection and meals. Deputy Prime Minister

Consumer Protection Agency Orders Airline Investigation Over Overbooking
1d ago Khaosod

The Consumer Protection Commission has been ordered to investigate an airline that sold more tickets than available seats and offered only 1,500 baht compensation to a passenger who was denied boarding. Deputy Prime Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi, who oversees the commission, disclosed details of a complaint from a passenger who had booked a domestic flight in advance, selected a seat, and paid for in-flight meal service, but was denied boarding on the travel date and forced to buy another airline's ticket at personal expense.

Supamas revealed that the airline had taken 191 bookings for a flight with only 189 seats. The complainant checked in on time and was the last passenger, resulting in denial of boarding. The airline stated it had sought volunteers to give up their seats with no success and offered 1,500 baht compensation plus a meal coupon to rebook on another flight, which the passenger rejected and purchased an alternative ticket independently.

Supamas emphasized that an airline ticket is a contract between consumer and business. When a passenger pays, selects a seat, and covers additional service charges, they expect the agreed service—not additional expenses on travel day. She expressed concern that the passenger followed all procedures correctly but ultimately had to pay for a new ticket themselves. Seat management is the airline's responsibility to handle carefully; the risk should not fall solely on passengers.

While overbooking may be standard airline practice, the airline must address problems fairly, not simply pay compensation and leave passengers to solve the issue alone. The commission has been ordered to expand the investigation into contract terms, ancillary charges like seat selection and advance meal orders that consumers paid for but did not receive, and advertising that may mislead consumers into believing seats are confirmed. The commission will also study whether to designate airlines as regulated businesses under consumer protection law to establish fair standards for all parties.

Man Sought for Desecrating Sacred Shrine in Nakhon Ratchasima
1d ago Khaosod

On August 17, 2024, a Facebook video posted by a user sparked widespread online criticism after showing a shirtless man with apparent intoxication cycling to a community shrine at Bamrung Tham Temple in Market Subdistrict, Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima. The man removed gold silk scarves, tricolored cloths, and flower garlands placed by worshippers at the shrine. The incident occurred around 8:51 PM on August 15. The suspect also drank a bottle of red ceremonial liquid left by villagers before attempting to lift the main shrine figure but abandoning the effort due to its weight. He then grabbed a smaller brass statue of the local deity, placed it in his bicycle basket, and rode away. The statue was later found abandoned on a sidewalk about one kilometer from the shrine and was recovered by residents and police.

The video spread widely on social media, drawing over 1,000 shares and numerous critical comments. Residents demanded authorities pursue the suspect, arguing that the shrine and deity statue are sacred community symbols worthy of protection. When a news reporter and local officials visited the site, accompanied by Subdistrict Administrator Sanung Khaipoet, Village Headman Theeraphong Changpoet, and witness Visnu Khaipoet, the removed cloths and garlands remained scattered below the shrine.

Witness Visnu Khaipoet recounted that after being alerted by a concerned citizen, he rushed to the site but found the suspect had already fled. He pursued the man on his motorcycle and spotted him cycling with the brass statue in the basket. The suspect wore a pink shirt and short pants and appeared intoxicated with slurred speech. Visnu recorded video evidence but did not apprehend him due to safety concerns. Early on August 16, the brass statue was discovered abandoned on a sidewalk near a factory and was returned to the shrine.

Local officials have vowed to coordinate with police to pursue the suspect for investigation and legal action. They have also called on the culprit to come forward, apologize to the shrine and its sacred figures, and seek forgiveness from the community, as these items are considered protective deities of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Thailand's national boccia team is heading to Seoul, South Korea to compete in the World Boccia Championships 2026 from August 24 to September 4, 2025. The Thai squad will face elite boccia athletes from around the globe while targeting an important milestone before the Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan later in the year.

The world championship serves as a critical test for Thai boccia on the global stage. The team will compete across multiple classifications with experienced and internationally accomplished athletes, including BC1 Visnu Houtpradit, BC2 Vorawut Sangampha, Phakaphum Linchoom, and Sattanan Brahmasiri, BC3 Jarunsak Chamdaeng and Ludamani Khlahauy, plus BC4 Pornchai Labhyen and Nualchan Phon.

According to World Boccia rankings as of August 1, 2025, Vorawut Sangampha holds the highest ranking among Thai athletes at fifth globally in BC2. Ludamani Khlahauy ranks 16th globally, Pornchai Labhyen 20th, and Nualchan Phon 21st in BC4, while Visnu Houtpradit ranks 22nd, Sattanan Brahmasiri 29th, and Phakaphum Linchoom 31st.

Competition will be intense as Thailand faces leading boccia nations including Brazil, Portugal, and England, all with world-class athletes and extensive international experience. The Thai team has set a target of winning one gold medal, requiring careful preparation of tactics, precision, and mental control in each match.

Key events include BC2 Men with Vorawut Sangampha and BC4 Men with Pornchai Labhyen, as well as the team event featuring Visnu Houtpradit, Phakaphum Linchoom, and Sattanan Brahmasiri as core members. Team competition rules require three athletes from the same classification representing different genders, demanding individual skill, communication, and teamwork.

For Thai boccia, the Seoul championships represent more than just competition results; it serves as a platform to gain experience and evaluate athlete performance before the major challenge ahead in October. After the world championships, the Thai team will immediately move to the Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya from October 18-24, 2025, competing across 11 events. Major competitors in Asia include China, Indonesia, and Japan.

For the team event at the Asian Para Games, Thailand plans to field Piyarat Tey, Vorawut Sangampha, and Phakaphum Linchoom as core members. From Seoul to Nagoya, the Thai boccia team's 2025 journey extends beyond the world championships—it represents another critical test to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and international experience to build momentum before the October Asian Para Games challenge.

The Thai boccia team's goal is not simply to compete, but to fight in every frame, maximize every point, and deliver the best possible performance for Thailand on both the world and Asian stages.

On August 17, a Facebook user named Surasak Hongthong posted about discovering a large whale carcass behind Samet Island and shared video footage of the find. The carcass was later identified as a large Bryde's whale lodged among rocks around Samet Island in Sametsarai Subdistrict, Satahip District, Chonburi Province. Local fishermen and residents reported the discovery to authorities.

Wuttipong Wonginthorn, director of the Marine Resource Conservation Section at the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources Office 2 (Chonburi), confirmed the report. The whale carcass is in a decomposed state, emitting a foul odor, with portions of skin burned by sun exposure. It remains lodged against rocks near the island. The sex, age, and cause of death are currently unknown.

Following notification of the discovery, Pinsak Surasavadee, director-general of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, ordered the department's regional office to proceed with recovery operations in coordination with the Naval Area Command Region 1, the Royal Thai Navy, the Naval Special Warfare Command, veterinarians from the Upper Gulf of Thailand Research Center, and local conservation networks.

Recovery operations were scheduled for August 18, involving the transport of the whale carcass from Samet Island to Haad Yai Beach in Sametsarai Subdistrict. After recovery, a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, with tissue samples, biological samples, and other evidence collected for laboratory analysis and genetic comparison.

If the investigation determines the whale died from human-related causes or an illegal act, relevant agencies will gather evidence and pursue legal action. After the necropsy and sample collection, the remains will be handled according to scientific and sanitary standards. The Bryde's whale skeleton will be processed for conservation and future display as an educational resource on rare marine animals and coastal resources of Chonburi Province.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources urges the public and tourists to report any sightings of rare marine animals or stranded creatures to the department or hotline 1362 so officials can properly investigate, document, and provide appropriate assistance.

MP Ice Denies Charges as Lawyer Argues Posts Are Not Genuine Criticism
1d ago Khaosod

Lawmaker Rakchonok Srinork, known as Ice from the Pheu Thai Party, arrived at Thonglor Police Station at 5 p.m. on August 17 in response to a summons. The case was filed by Suchat Chomklin, who accused her of spreading false information via computer systems that could cause public alarm and defamation through advertisements.

Suchat's legal team appeared at the station and stated they would not negotiate or mediate, and would pursue the case through full legal proceedings. They argued that Ice's social media posts accusing Suchat of corruption and bribery do not constitute legitimate criticism but rather constitute accusations and defamation. The legal team also indicated they would file a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission alleging serious violations of ethical standards.

After meeting with investigators for approximately 30 minutes, Ice underwent fingerprinting before the assembled media. She denied all charges and stressed that politicians and state officials must allow the public and media to criticize them directly or indirectly. She stated that if officials cannot tolerate criticism, they should resign and pursue other careers. Ice confirmed she is prepared to fight the case through the justice system and will submit a written statement.

Ice also discussed the investigation into the Thai Digital Passport project, noting that the Digital Economy and Society Ministry's Permanent Secretary and Inspector-General had not appeared in person before the committee but instead delegated representatives who could not answer questions. She criticized this lack of accountability from senior officials and stated she would file complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Central Investigation Bureau if and when the project launches for public registration.
