Thailand and South Korea Deepen Environmental Partnership Toward Net Zero
Thailand and South Korea agreed to strengthen environmental cooperation on climate change, Net Zero goals, and protected area management, with plans to sign a memorandum on forest conservation and emissions reduction.
On September 11, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin welcomed South Korean Ambassador Park Yongmin and his delegation at the ministry's headquarters to discuss strengthening environmental cooperation between Thailand and South Korea. The two sides addressed three major topics: World Heritage conservation and registration, climate change response and Net Zero goals, and improved management of national parks and protected areas.
Regarding World Heritage status, Suchart thanked South Korea for supporting the registration of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahaviharn in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a new UNESCO World Heritage site, a source of pride for all Thais. Both nations pledged to continue greenhouse gas reduction efforts, including work with the Global Green Growth Institute, methane reduction, clean energy investment and technology exchange, along with measures to combat air pollution and particulate matter for improved public health.
Thailand and South Korea are preparing to sign a new memorandum of understanding between the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and South Korea's National Park Service to promote knowledge exchange on forest carbon credits, biodiversity conservation, and protected area management. Ambassador Park commended Thailand's environmental leadership and expressed South Korea's commitment to technology transfer and supporting emissions reduction targets. Minister Suchart emphasized that this cooperation represents a significant step in elevating the Thailand-South Korea green partnership to achieve concrete results in environmental conservation, emissions reduction, biodiversity protection, and sustainable economic growth.
