Nine Civic Groups Push for Death Penalty in Serious Murder Cases

Nine civic groups petitioned Parliament on August 3 to enforce capital punishment for aggravated murder cases, citing recent brutal killings that have undermined Thailand's safety reputation among citizens and tourists.

Nine Civic Groups Push for Death Penalty in Serious Murder Cases

Nine volunteer networks led by Tantakun Jit Isara, chairman of the Santiprachadhamma Club, submitted a letter at Parliament on August 3 to Lt. Gen. Vichai Sangkhapraiphat, advisor to the House Speaker, along with party officials Chris Botrananthorn and Angsana Niamvanichkul. The coalition of nine civic groups—including One Foundation, Saiymai Tong Sarot, Good Organization Foundation, People for People Group, and several others—called for the government to strictly enforce capital punishment in cases of aggravated homicide, especially where offenders have a history of repeat crimes. Tantakun stated that decisive action must be taken against murderers and sexual offenders, with capital punishment applied and sentencing reductions, pardons, and early releases reviewed. He emphasized that strict enforcement of the 2022 law preventing repeat sexual and violent offenses must be strengthened. He noted that recent brutal killings, including the murder of two Russian sisters and Thai nationals, have damaged Thailand's safety reputation among citizens and tourists. Tantakun called for comprehensive justice reform from investigation through imprisonment and rehabilitation to ensure capital punishment is applied and Article 52 loopholes—which allow sentence reductions from one-third to life imprisonment or reductions to 25-50 years—are closed. He argued that multiple sentence reductions ultimately result in criminals serving only a few years, making Thai law enforcement a 'paper tiger' that criminals no longer fear. He added that the civic network supports capital punishment for heinous crimes and serious drug offenses, and believes the entire justice system must be reformed to protect the lives and safety of Thai citizens and foreign visitors alike.

Thailand hosted the 17th ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework meeting in Bangkok to standardize education credentials across Southeast Asia, enabling easier workforce movement and employment recognition throughout the region.

Thailand Hosts ASEAN Qualifications Framework Meeting
3 Aug Khaosod

On August 3 at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, the Office of the Education Council hosted the 17th ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework (AQRF) Committee Meeting and related meetings (August 3-5). Deputy Education Minister Akkarun Kanngkittinant chaired the opening ceremony, joined by Education Council Secretary-General Prof. Dr. Prawit Aerawhorn, council vice-secretaries Dr. Niti Nacit and Dr. Supchai Janpum, and numerous senior education officials.

The 17th AQRF Committee Meeting covered three main discussion points: developing curriculum registration standards, competency-based curricula, and micro-credentials; establishing a national credit bank system to support flexible learning pathways and lifelong learning for Thais; and benchmarking the ASEAN Qualifications Framework with regional frameworks, including implementing Criterion 11 to align Thailand's National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and AQRF designations on national credential documents.

The implementation of Criterion 11 aims to standardize AQRF level designations across ASEAN member credentials, enabling reliable qualification comparisons and labor mobility across the region. This approach accommodates diverse national qualification systems while promoting efficient regional workforce movement.

Deputy Minister Akkarun stated that the AQRF meetings have continuously advanced standardized qualifications across ASEAN member states, enabling graduates to work throughout the region. He noted that the government has integrated efforts across the Education, Labor, and Commerce ministries to ensure students graduate with clear employment prospects both domestically and internationally. He emphasized that establishing common ASEAN standards will allow Thailand to send quality workers abroad while receiving skilled workers, positioning Thai graduates for ASEAN and global opportunities.

TISCO Auto Cash Launches Debt Consolidation Campaign for Car Owners

TISCO Auto Cash is offering car owners a way to consolidate multiple debts into a single loan with fixed interest rates starting at 0.49% monthly, using their vehicle as collateral through December 2025.

TISCO Auto Cash Launches Debt Consolidation Campaign for Car Owners
3 Aug Khaosod

TISCO Auto Cash has launched a 'Consolidate Debt Easily in One Place' campaign targeting car owners to combine multiple debts into a single manageable loan, simplifying administration and accelerating debt repayment. Vipa Mettaviharn, director of multi-purpose credit and direct sales at TISCO Bank, revealed that household debt remains a significant challenge for Thais in 2025, with 78.86% carrying formal system debt, 13.72% carrying both formal and informal debt, and 7.43% carrying only informal debt. Much of this stems from borrowing across multiple channels—bank loans, credit cards, product installment plans, and online lending platforms—reducing financial liquidity and affecting daily living standards.

Many Thais currently juggle multiple debts, bearing interest from various sources while struggling with complex repayment management. TISCO Auto Cash launched this campaign as an alternative solution, allowing borrowers to consolidate multiple accounts into a single debt. The program suits those seeking to close high-interest credit card balances, personal loans, or escape minimum payment traps, streamlining multi-source repayments, enabling efficient financial planning, and accelerating debt clearance.

Borrowers wishing to settle or close existing debts—whether credit card balances, personal loans, or minimum payment installments—can use their vehicle as collateral under the 'Consolidate Debt Easily in One Place' campaign. Eligible vehicles include sedans, pickup trucks, and cargo trucks; no vehicle registration transfer is required. Vehicle age plus repayment term cannot exceed 25 years, and approval ceilings reach 100% of assessed vehicle value.

Fixed interest rates start at 0.49% monthly (effective annual rate 12–24%), with repayment options from 6 to 72 months and flexibility to make early repayment or lump-sum payments without penalty. The campaign runs through December 30, 2025, subject to bank-set lending criteria. Interested applicants can complete the online form at www.TISCOAutoCash.com for initial assessment and document guidance before applying at any TISCO branch nationwide. For more information, contact TISCO Contact Center at 02-080-6000 or 02-633-6000 (press 3) or 02-123-4000, or visit Facebook: TISCOAutoCash and LINE: @TISCOAutoCash.

Nan Villages Struggle 50 Years Without Bridge Over Stream

Farmers in four Nan villages have struggled for 50 years without a bridge over Samun Stream, forcing them to manually drag crops across water during monsoon season and causing significant product damage and transport delays.

Nan Villages Struggle 50 Years Without Bridge Over Stream
3 Aug Khaosod

Residents and farmers from 3-4 villages in Sanean Subdistrict, Muang District, Nan Province are suffering severe hardship due to difficulties transporting agricultural products across Samun Stream, a critical and heavily used route for moving crops year-round, including rambutan, durian, corn, and rubber to outside markets.

On August 3, 2025, Monnchai Leipaiyat, village headman of Moo 10 Baan Laibeya, explained that during heavy rains and monsoon flooding, water levels in Samun Stream rise and completely inundate the area, making all vehicle and pedestrian crossings impossible. During harvest season, farmers resort to packing agricultural products into sacks, binding them with rope, and manually dragging the sacks across the water to the other side—an exhausting and inefficient process.

This method impacts harvest time, causes worker fatigue during transport, and importantly, damages some of the produce. Residents and farmers have endured this hardship for over 50 years.

Currently, many agricultural products serve as the primary income for farmers in the area. They are requesting a strong bridge across Samun Stream to transport agricultural goods, which would significantly improve the quality of life for residents and farmers.

Sanean Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) official Sanseang Chaephaang revealed that while residents and farmers want the bridge, the project requires substantial funding—estimated at 1-2 million baht or more—exceeding the SAO's budget capacity to implement alone. The SAO is requesting support from relevant government agencies to fund construction of a permanent bridge across Samun Stream to establish a stable transportation route.

The People's Movement for Just Society (PMUFF), led by Chamnong Nuphan, along with northern farmer networks and community representatives who traveled from Bangkok's central station, gathered in front of Government House on Phitsanulok Road to submit a letter pressing the government on its plan to dissolve the Land Bank (a state enterprise, or BTDT) by September 30, 2026, as part of a public-sector restructuring initiative. The protesters demanded that the government review the decision by the Committee for the Development and Promotion of State Enterprises (CPSE), amend the royal decree establishing the Land Bank, and extend the dissolution deadline by at least one year to allow a permanent body to address land-related problems in line with land reform and distribution principles enshrined in the constitution, without harming those suffering from land disputes. They also requested PMUFF representation in government negotiations on the issue and called on the government to expedite the appointment of a subcommittee to study and revise the National Parks Act 2019 and the Wildlife Protection Act 2019 under the National Land Policy Committee (NLPC). Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, in his capacity as NLPC chairman, was scheduled to hold talks with community representatives that same afternoon. Police and crowd-control units were deployed around Government House to maintain security and enforce the Public Assembly Act 2015. Demonstrators read a statement urging Songsak to accelerate talks with protest groups on resolving the Land Bank closure and vowed to remain camped at the site until their demands were met, warning that they would escalate action if progress stalled. They also submitted a letter to the Bangkok Police Commissioner requesting his participation in talks scheduled for August 4, before the crowd planned to relocate to the CPSE office and the area in front of Government House.

Rayong Governor Traipop Wongtrairat revealed that reports were received of dark-colored, foul-smelling soil being dumped in Moo 4, Phananikhom Subdistrict, Nikhom Pattana District. He ordered local agencies to immediately investigate the facts on the ground to clarify the situation and ease public concerns. On July 31, 2025, District Chief Pattana Phoothanapibal instructed the Nikhom Pattana Dharma Center to coordinate with Phananikhom Subdistrict Municipality, with Deputy Mayor Wanchai Prommasat leading the investigation. The investigation confirmed that the dumped soil was placed on land managed by Rayong Self-Help Community, which is currently unoccupied. Representatives from Omtasity Industrial Estate explained that the dumping resulted from a communication breakdown, with about 20 truckloads of soil temporarily stored at the site. "The provincial authorities will not sit idle on this matter," Governor Traipop stated. "Although the operator has provided an explanation, to reassure the public and prevent environmental damage, relevant agencies have ordered Omtasity Industrial Estate to immediately remove all soil from the area and return it to their own facility. This operation is expected to be completed within three days."

"Anything that goes against the current is difficult. Rowing upstream is difficult. Creating virtue and goodness is also difficult," reflects Luang Pho Cha Supatthato of Wat Nong Pa Pong in Ubon Ratchathani.

Luang Pho Yid Chanthsuvanno of Wat Nong Jok in Kuiburi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan, was a renowned Buddhist teacher. In 2012, his principal disciple Chaiya Amsaraang commissioned the "89th Anniversary Amulet of Luang Pho Yid" to commemorate the monk's 89 years of life. The oval-shaped amulet has a loop, bordered edges, and a raised half-length portrait on the front with the number 89 stamped on the robe above the lower border. The reverse features a raised image of Hanuman carrying a flag with Khmer script and sequential numbering.

In 1969, Phra Thep Rattanamolee (Kaew Uthummaala), abbot of Wat Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom, created amulets honoring Luang Pon Samet (Phra Kru Khee Hom), a venerable teacher and restorer of Phra That Phanom in Vientiane, Laos. These arm-shaped amulets were cast in multiple materials—nickel-plated copper, silver-plated copper, gold-plated copper, and patinated copper—featuring the seated monk in a Buddha-like posture on the front and the standing Phra That Phanom on the reverse.

Luang Pho Thong Suk Indracho of Wat Ton Don Luang in Cha-Am, Phetchaburi, was a celebrated monk of Phetchaburi province. His most popular amulet is the second edition, created in 1955 for a ordination hall dedication ceremony. The second edition is more highly valued than the first because the portrait resemblance is superior—even Luang Pho Thong Suk himself preferred it. The oval amulet features a half-length portrait on the front with the monk's name above, and on the reverse his personal yantra with the inscription "In commemoration of the ordination hall celebration" and the temple name and year stamped below. This amulet ranks among the most sought-after in Phetchaburi.

Luang Pho Khom Aniso, former abbot of Wat Phai Rong Waeo in Song Phi Non District, Suphan Buri, created numerous amulets, the most popular being the "Luang Pho Khom Holy Water Amulet." Commissioned in 1973 by Boonma Bunleriwannichaya and offered to the temple for free distribution, the amulet features a full seated meditation portrait on the front with a border inscription reading "Holy Water Amulet, Wat Potaram, Luang Pho Khom, Suphan Buri" and the word "Special." The reverse displays a Buddha image labeled "Phra Phuttha Koddom" with yantra script, making it another highly valued amulet.

Revered Buddhist Monk Luang Pho Hun Honored at Wat Jet Samian

Luang Pho Hun Phutthasaro, a revered Buddhist scholar and abbot of Wat Jet Samian in Ratchaburi Province for 28 years, passed away in 1974 after dedicating 52 years to monastic service and teaching.

Revered Buddhist Monk Luang Pho Hun Honored at Wat Jet Samian
3 Aug Khaosod

Luang Pho Hun Phutthasaro, also known as Phra Kru Mongkol Ratana, was a revered senior Buddhist scholar at Wat Jet Samian in Jet Samian Subdistrict, Potharam District, Ratchaburi Province, deeply respected by the local community even after his passing. He was born on Friday, April 14, 1899, at Ban Somtha, Mueang 5, Bang Ton District, Potharam, Ratchaburi. Like other boys of his era, he lived a typical childhood and completed his early education in 1913, achieving proficiency equivalent to fourth-grade primary schooling at Wat Somtha School.

At the proper age in 1919, he underwent ordination at Wat Somtha's ordination hall. However, after only one year of monastic life, he was conscripted for military service in 1920. Following his discharge in 1922, he felt a strong calling to deepen his study of Buddhist doctrine and sought re-ordination on March 17, 1922, at Wat Somtha. His preceptor was Phra Kru Satit Sutakara (Luang Pho Kong) of Wat Tha Luang Phol, his ordination teacher was Phra Ajahn Chao of Wat Tha Luang Phol, and his witness was Phra Ajahn Mat of Wat Bang Lan, Potharam District, Ratchaburi. He was given the monastic name Phutthasaro.

For two years, he studied Buddhist texts and the Pali language at Wat Somtha with his teachers and an elderly mentor, eventually mastering the translation of the Mangala Sutta. In 1924, he moved to Wat Bang Ton to pursue advanced Buddhist studies and ecclesiastical training for 18 years. In 1937, he was officially appointed as a Buddhist educator by the monastic order, earning widespread respect for his moral teachings to the community. In 1940, he was designated as a Dharma teacher for monks and novices within his temple.

In 1941, he returned to Wat Somtha to assist with monastic administration and continue as a Dharma teacher. Throughout his life, whether at Wat Bang Ton, Wat Somtha, or Wat Jet Samian, his students consistently passed the national Buddhist studies examination every year. In 1946, he was appointed abbot of Wat Jet Samian at the request of the local community, led by village headman Kowit Wongyara. As abbot, he reorganized the monastic community and developed the temple to flourish to the best of his ability.

In 1947, he was promoted to Kammavachacarya (ecclesiastical administrator). In 1958, he received the title Phra Kru Prathuan, and in 1969, he was elevated to Phra Kru Saññabat with the monastic title Phra Kru Mongkol Ratana by royal decree. He passed away peacefully on July 29, 1974, at Siriraj Hospital from heart failure, at the age of 75 and after 52 years in monastic service.

Wat Jet Samian, located in Mueang 3, Jet Samian Subdistrict, Potharam District, Ratchaburi Province, was established in 1757 and received the royal charter for its boundary in 1976. The temple houses an important shrine enshrining a cast image of its former abbot, serving as a spiritual center and focal point for the community. Both Phra Kru Satjahabhirom (Luang Pu Mueab) and Phra Kru Mongkol Ratana (Luang Pho Hun), the temple's two most venerated former abbots, left lasting legacies of merit and spiritual development that continue to inspire devotion to this day.

The amulets and auspicious objects created by these abbots remain widely sought after and cherished, particularly the first-edition coins cast in 1969 to commemorate Luang Pho Hun's elevation in monastic rank, minted in silver and gold.
