Officials Seize 25 Tons of Smuggled Chicken Offal at Border

Surut Neuangchumnik, commander of the Phrapiroon Agricultural and Food Security Center (SPRO), revealed that on August 1, 2026, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the center's Narathiwat animal checkpoint and Sukhaikolok Customs officials jointly conducted an enforcement operation against illegal agricultural product smuggling, following orders from Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Suriya Chungrungreungkij to crackdown on such operations. Officers inspected two suspicious trucks in Sukhaikolok District, Narathiwat Province, and discovered chicken innards totaling 15,540 kilograms and 9,890 kilograms—25,430 kilograms in total, valued at approximately 2,034,400 baht. The drivers could not produce documentation or permits for transporting the goods, and admitted they had been hired to deliver the cargo to an unspecified destination that would be provided later. The chicken offal had no known source, lacked proper import authorization, and had no valid transport permit. Officials seized the goods and filed charges under two provisions: Section 22, carrying penalties of up to 2 years imprisonment and 40,000 baht fine, and Section 31, carrying up to 2 years imprisonment and 200,000 baht fine. The seized goods have been placed in custody at Sukhaikolok Customs, and a complaint has been filed at Sakeao Police Station. The case is pending disposal of the seized cargo according to livestock regulations.

Budget Subcommittee Flags Misaligned Projects Across Ministries

Budget Subcommittee Flags Misaligned Projects Across Ministries
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, at Parliament, Theerachat Tort-rakul, a former Pheu Thai party list candidate and member of the ICT and Revolving Fund equipment subcommittee of the exceptional budget bill review committee, revealed troubling procurement irregularities. Several state agencies have solicited price quotes from companies outside their fields—for instance, one agency requested IT system pricing from a real estate developer, while another sought 50-million-baht valuations from a private firm with zero revenue. These concerns, he said, received no attention from government-aligned subcommittee members, prolonging deliberations and creating tension.

Theerachat cited the Interior Ministry's 77-province fire suppression system project as an example: each province required different specifications and computer room sizes, yet the proposal submitted to the subcommittee contained no details. He alleged the ministry presented two different bid forms—one to the Budget Bureau and another to the subcommittee. He also described a case where a single individual submitted bids for the same project under two separate companies, presenting clear fraud risks, yet all proposals ultimately passed.

During Interior Ministry budget hearings, a deputy permanent secretary confronted Theerachat when he raised concerns about concealed documents, slapping the table and pointing at him in what he called unacceptable conduct. Frustrated by rushed approvals—some projects approved before the secretary even finished reading their names—Theerachat recorded the proceedings on his phone, prompting the subcommittee to call parliamentary police. He called for live-streaming of all budget review sessions.

Theerachat highlighted more examples of misaligned projects: the Energy Ministry proposing a banana-drying oven (supposedly to educate communities on energy transition), and the Land Reform Office seeking meatball-making and sausage-making machines plus lemongrass cutters, which he found confusing. "It's time to overhaul how these budgets are drafted," he said.

Meanwhile, Navy Captain Kitti Phiyawanna, a Pheu Thai list MP and member of the annual expenditure budget committee, noted that the Department of Provincial Administration repeatedly requested overlapping network equipment across projects. Adopting the government's "Cloud First" policy, he argued, would achieve significant savings.

Uncle Kung showed remarkable composure after being robbed at gunpoint of 6,000 baht by two armed assailants on a motorcycle. The incident took place on August 1 around 10:30 p.m. on Lad Phrao-Wang Hin Road in the Chok Chai 4 area, when two men on a motorcycle approached him as he was pushing his fruit cart home. The robbers threatened him with a gun, ransacked his money container, and fled with approximately 6,000 baht he had saved.

When interviewed on August 4, Kung Saetang, the victim, explained that he did not see the robbers' faces and did not know if the weapon was real or fake. He chose not to resist because he saw they had a weapon. He stated this was his first experience with theft despite selling fruit for many decades, having inherited the trade from his father and grandfather.

When asked if he was angry, Kung replied calmly: "I'm not angry. So what? I can earn it again. Whoever took it—that's their karma. Whatever they do, they'll face the consequences." Despite the loss of his accumulated savings, he vowed to continue selling fruit to support himself, confirming he would be back at his usual spot in Chok Chai 4, Lad Phrao-Wang Hin today.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the incident area to gather evidence and identify the suspects for prosecution.

Family Plans Second Autopsy for Travel Creator Hlun Solo
4 Aug Khaosod

BANGKOK — The family of Thai travel creator Hlun Solo said they will arrange a second autopsy after his body is returned from Georgia before holding funeral rites in Thailand.

In an update posted on Monday evening, Hlun Solo's elder brother said the family plans to send the body to the Central Institute of Forensic Science under Thailand's Ministry of Justice for an additional examination to ensure all procedures are completed thoroughly and transparently.

The family expects the process to take one to two days after the body arrives in Thailand before funeral rites are held at the family's home.

Details of the funeral schedule, including the date, time and venue, will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.

The family also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support received following the death of the popular YouTuber, who died in Georgia while filming travel content.

They specifically thanked Chulalongkorn University President Wilert Puriwat, Political Science Dean Pakorn Siriprapob, the Faculty of Political Science and the Rural Scholarship Program for offering to host the first night of funeral prayers.

Responding to inquiries from supporters wishing to help, the family said it would welcome donations of equipment and supplies needed for the funeral, including tents, tables, chairs, fans, sound systems, lighting, portable toilets, drinking water and other essential items.

The family stressed that it was not seeking financial contributions but wanted to give those who wished to pay their final respects an opportunity to support the funeral according to their means.

Hlun Solo, one of Thailand's best-known travel content creators, died in Georgia while on a filming trip. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation by Georgian authorities.

Online Sellers Demand Action Against Platform's Transport Monopoly
4 Aug Khaosod

Online merchants are demanding that Thailand's Trade Competition Commission (TCCC) take action against major e-commerce platforms over alleged shipping monopolies, saying that despite new regulations, enforcement has been lacking and putting livelihoods at risk. Small merchants report facing rising costs at a time when consumer spending remains fragile—sales growth has stalled while platform fees and service charges keep climbing, eroding already thin profit margins. Shipping restrictions remain a major complaint, with many vendors unable to switch carriers or manage delivery costs, leaving them stuck with underperforming services even though the TCCC introduced digital platform guidelines on March 25, 2026, explicitly forbidding anti-competitive practices and vendor exploitation.

On August 4, 2026, lawyer Anuanchai Chaiyedej filed a petition with the TCCC requesting enforcement action, arguing that platform shipping-lock behavior violates the new competition guidelines. However, market conditions suggest little has changed—platforms continue restricting shipper choices to a single provider, and requests to switch carriers are often rejected or made deliberately difficult, forcing vendors to absorb poor service quality and damage to their businesses. Meanwhile, capable shipping companies are also suffering from lost volume, and industry figures warn that ongoing layoffs in the transport sector could harm the broader economy if the situation persists.

The impact extends beyond merchants to consumers, merchants note, since higher vendor costs translate into higher retail prices or thinner discounts. Lawyer Chaiyedej emphasizes that the real test is enforcement effectiveness—if complaints continue about shipping restrictions and rising fees, trust in fair e-commerce competition will erode further. The petition was received by Theerawat Tipratana, deputy secretary-general of the TCCC.

Armed Gunmen Spray Gunfire at Police in Pattani, Civilian Wounded
4 Aug Khaosod

At 11:40 a.m. on August 4, 2569, police at Mayo Station in Pattani received a report of gunfire directed at officers outside the Pattani Excise Office, Mayo branch, in Tambon Langa, Mayo District. Officers rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

Upon arrival, the gunfire had ceased. One civilian was found wounded by a single gunshot to the torso and was taken to Mayo Hospital. At the scene, approximately 10 M16 shell casings were collected as evidence.

The building sustained multiple bullet impacts to windows and walls, though fortunately no officers were injured. Extensive blood stains were also found on a marble bench in front of the office.

Investigation revealed that four officers from the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Center (SBPPOC) in Yala were escorting a suspect to the office for tax violation proceedings related to untaxed cigarette sales in Sai Buri District. The suspect and officers were seated on a marble bench in front when two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle arrived. One suspect was dressed as a Muslim woman wearing a hijab and carried an M16 rifle. The gunmen fired approximately 10 rounds at the officers before fleeing at high speed.

Following the incident, police deployed units to pursue the suspects and immediately reviewed CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas to identify the attackers for prosecution.

Democrat Party Sets Up Independent Panel on Sexual Harassment Allegation
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, 2025, at Parliament, Panida Mongkolswat, a Samut Prakan MP from the Democrat Party, discussed progress in investigating allegations that Thisana Chunhawan (Kaew Ta), a former Bangkok MP from the Democrat Party, was sexually harassed. She stated that an independent committee with no prior involvement in previous parliamentary sessions has been established to create a safe, comfortable, and secure space for the victim to come forward.

When asked how evidence would be gathered if Thisana does not provide information directly, Panida said they would need to interview friends and associates who may have access to information or understanding of the situation to establish a timeline and facts. The committee will use all available processes to establish the initial facts.

When asked whether Thisana has spoken with her about who committed the harassment, Panida said she has no knowledge of the matter and was unaware when the incident occurred. She noted that current public discussion of the case may affect the victim's feelings, as she may not wish to communicate about it publicly. She emphasized this is the victim's preference, and the incident happened long ago with limited details available.

When asked if the public disclosure might be intended to overshadow other issues facing the Democrat Party, Panida said she would not presume, but rather focus on how to respond now that it has emerged.

"I acknowledge that in the past, based on Kaew Ta's perspective, how the party handled this may not have been sufficient to make her feel safe enough to communicate about it concretely. But today we recognize this and have made continuous political progress," Panida said. "I am confident that the current justice process will deliver fairness to Kaew Ta and all involved. Regarding clarity on this matter, we can provide more information later, as there is currently insufficient clarity," she added.

Armed Robbers Hold Up Elderly Fruit Vendor for 6,000 Baht
4 Aug Khaosod

Two armed robbers on a motorcycle accosted an elderly fruit vendor in the Ladprao-Wanghin area, brandishing a gun and ransacking his money container on his cart, making off with around 6,000 baht. The incident occurred on August 1 at approximately 10:30 p.m. near the Ladprao temple curve, before Bang Jak petrol station—a dark and isolated location. On August 4, the "Khao Sod" news team met with Nai Cho, a bakery shop owner and good citizen who accompanied the vendor to file a police report.

Nai Cho explained that the vendor regularly stops at his shop around 5:00 p.m., and he often provides him with food and water because the elderly man pushes his cart selling fruit by himself. On August 1, the vendor arrived looking distressed and said he had suffered "bad luck"—he had been robbed. He recounted that around 10:30 p.m., while pushing his cart home on his usual route, two men on a motorcycle wearing black helmets pulled up beside him. The passenger, holding a gun, stood guard while the driver rummaged through the colored container where the vendor kept his money, stealing approximately 6,000 baht accumulated over three days of sales.

Nai Cho noted that the robbers likely had been observing the vendor's behavior beforehand, as he had been selling in the area for a long time and kept his money in the same container—something an ordinary person would not know unless they had been monitoring him. The 6,000 baht represented three days of fruit sales plus extra money customers had given him, such as paying 100 baht for a 50-baht item. The vendor has no bank account, no mobile phone, and cannot read or write, so he cannot deposit or transfer money normally. When customers want to transfer funds to him, they send money to Nai Cho's account, and he gives the vendor cash. After the robbery, Nai Cho took the vendor to file a report, and police are investigating.

Despite his fear following the robbery, the vendor continues selling because it is his only means of livelihood. Nai Cho appealed to the perpetrators: "If you must be a thief, at least have some dignity. Don't rob an elderly man who has no strength to fight back. He would give you anything if you asked." He added that the vendor is so kindhearted that he sometimes lets customers take fruit on credit when they have no money. Nai Cho urged the robbers to stop their behavior and never target the elderly or those unable to defend themselves.

Index Living Mall has launched the 'Share Home Moments with Your Four-Legged Friends' campaign, inviting pet owners to share photos of their pets in their homes and compete for prizes worth over 50,000 baht. According to Kritchanok Patmasatyanondh, Chief Executive of Index Living Mall (ILM), the housing and furniture market in Thailand is moving in a new direction as the Pet Humanization trend—valuing pets as family members—gains popularity and drives significant growth in the pet market.

Thailand's pet market is projected to reach over 100 billion baht in 2025, up from approximately 92 billion baht in 2024, representing growth of about 13.2 percent. Pet food represents the largest market segment at around 62.4 billion baht, followed by pet equipment and furniture, and veterinary services.

Index Living Mall sees the Pet Humanization trend as more than just a boost to pet product sales—it is fundamentally changing how consumers select furniture and design their living spaces. Customers are no longer seeking only pet-specific products but want homes designed to seamlessly integrate both people and pets into a unified, harmonious space. To address design, safety, and comfort needs, the company is creating a market that combines furniture, home living, and pet lifestyle through several strategic approaches:

1. Product Innovation: Furniture that merges functionality for both humans and pets, such as Easy Clean fabric sofas with water-repellent fiber technology that resists staining and odor, and synthetic leather sofas that are scratch-resistant and free from harmful chemicals like phthalates and formaldehyde. Multi-functional workdesks that accommodate cat scratching posts and climbing features, alongside coffee tables, side tables, and stools designed for shared living.

2. Home Solutions and Customization: Furniture available under the Younique Built-in Furniture brand, offering unlimited choices in design, size, function, and materials to meet the needs of pet lovers in any living situation.

3. Category Expansion: A Pet Living Collection featuring pet accessories including beds, cat houses, pet strollers, travel bags, food bowls, water fountains, litter boxes, toys, scratching posts, odor neutralizers, and waste bags, available at all Index Living Mall locations.

Index Living Mall has also expanded its 'Pet Accessory' zone to approximately 30 square meters per location with over 100 product lines for new stores and renovated branches including locations in Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, and Hat Yai. Pet-friendly living is not merely a short-term trend but a long-term business opportunity that will grow alongside social change and evolving lifestyles.

Pheu Thai Dismisses Coalition Rumors, Vows Full Scrutiny

Pheu Thai deputy leader Prayut Wattharasin rejected coalition speculation on August 4, reaffirming the party's commitment to its opposition role and vowing to scrutinize the government's performance on competitiveness and corruption.

Pheu Thai Dismisses Coalition Rumors, Vows Full Scrutiny
4 Aug Khaosod

On August 4, Prayut Wattharasin, a Pheu Thai list MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, dismissed speculation about forming a red-green-orange coalition government, noting that such arrangements remain based on unconfirmed assumptions across multiple factions. He emphasized that Pheu Thai's current role is to fulfill its duty as the leading opposition force, with all party members mindful of the public's electoral trust. Denying any outreach to potential coalition partners, Wattharasin called the rumors unrelated to Pheu Thai, explaining that submitting no-confidence motions is the opposition's responsibility while other parties' decisions to participate and vote rest with them. When asked about Pheu Thai's position if the government coalition partners discuss terms, he reaffirmed the party's clarity about its opposition leadership role and declined to speculate on future events. However, he stressed on principle that MPs were elected and entrusted by the public, making their campaign pledges a binding social contract to uphold. Regarding government longevity, Wattharasin said he cannot predict the future but the opposition will demonstrate to all lawmakers that prolonging this government harms the nation through declining competitiveness, inequality, and widespread corruption across sectors and levels. "We will do our utmost in that role, and whenever the next election comes, we are ready to present an alternative that will lead the country toward a better future," he concluded.
