On August 16, 2569, administrative and police officials jointly set up strict checkpoints to inspect firearms and narcotics in Ban Dan Subdistrict, Ban Dan District, Buriram Province, and other areas across the province. The operation follows the policy of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister, focused on tightening controls and preventing the spread of firearms in society.

While officials were conducting inspections, Prime Minister Anutin, who was visiting the area on official business, was also checked like the general public. When the Prime Minister asked officers "Did you find anything?", they replied "No sir." When he asked further about the checkpoint area, officers responded "Only drugs, sir."

The heightened firearms control measures come in response to a series of violent incidents that have shaken Thai society, including a 14-year-old youth committing an act of violence at school and a politician's son using a gun to assault a classmate. The measures also address the shooting of Police Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert, Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization chairman, by Chaloem Rieoyrang, a former prominent politician.

To address the root cause and prevent illegal circulation of firearms that could lead to further violence, the Prime Minister has issued a strict order to suspend all issuance of firearm purchase licenses and firearm possession licenses until the Cabinet decides otherwise. He has also ordered the Department of Local Administration to cease awarding firearms to village headmen and local leaders. These measures aim to ensure the safety of lives and property of the public.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — A 52-year-old man died after reportedly suffering heatstroke while clearing grass and weeds in a rice field in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

At around 10:53 on Sunday, Hook 31 Korat rescue volunteers at the Kham Sakaesaeng unit were alerted by Pol. Lt. Col. Thiwakorn Chaemklang, an investigator at Kham Sakaesaeng Police Station, about a man found dead in a rice field in Ban Nong Thuriang, Non Mueang subdistrict, Kham Sakaesaeng district.

The field was located some distance from the road, forcing rescuers to leave their vehicle by the roadside and walk into the area carrying rescue equipment and a stretcher.

At the scene, rescuers found a man lying dead in a water channel along a field embankment. He was wearing black trousers and a long-sleeved blue shirt and had a waist bag.

Police ordered the body to be brought out of the water channel for examination, while police officers, local officials and villagers observed the process.

A mobile phone and the man's national identification card were found inside the waist bag. He was identified as Boonnam Chiansanthia, 52, a resident of Huai Thalaeng district, Nakhon Ratchasima.

No wounds or signs of assault were found on his body.

Relatives told authorities that Boonnam was originally from Huai Thalaeng district but had moved to Kham Sakaesaeng after marrying a local woman.

Before leaving home at around 08:00, he told his family that he was going to clear grass and weeds in the rice field.

When he had not returned by late morning, his family went looking for him and found him dead at the scene. They then alerted the village headman, who contacted police and rescue workers.

Authorities initially suspected that Boonnam had suffered heatstroke due to the hot and humid weather. He may have become dizzy, lost consciousness and fallen face-down into the water channel, where he was unable to help himself and went unnoticed until his death.

Rescuers took the body to Kham Sakaesaeng Hospital for a forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death. The body will then be released to relatives for religious rites.

Administrative officials and police jointly established strict checkpoints across Buriram province on August 16, 2026, to search for firearms and drugs in Ban Dan Subdistrict, Ban Dan District, and several other areas. The operation was carried out in line with Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's policy to step up efforts to control firearms and prevent their spread in society.

While officers were conducting searches, Anutin, who was in the area for official duties, was also stopped and searched like other members of the public. When asked by the prime minister if officers had found anything, a police officer replied that they had only discovered drugs at the checkpoints.

The latest crackdown on firearms comes as Thai society has faced a series of shocking violent incidents, including a shooting at a school allegedly carried out by a 14-year-old, an incident in which the son of a prominent politician allegedly used a gun to hit a fellow student, and the shooting of Pol Col Thongchai Yenprasert, a former president of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization, allegedly carried out by former politician Chalong Riawreng.

The government aims to tackle the problem at its source and prevent firearms from falling into situations that could lead to further violence. The prime minister previously ordered a halt to the issuance of firearm purchase permits known as Por.3 and firearm possession permits known as Por.4 until the Cabinet decides otherwise. He also instructed the Department of Provincial Administration to end the practice of giving firearms as rewards to subdistrict headmen and village headmen. The measures are ultimately aimed at protecting the lives and property of the public.

Commerce Ministry Investigates 49 Companies in Sakon Nakhon for Chinese Nominees

Commerce Ministry Investigates 49 Companies in Sakon Nakhon for Chinese Nominees

The Ministry of Commerce has discovered irregularities in company registrations across four districts in Sakon Nakhon Province, with companies registered under 100-percent Chinese ownership. Puenpong Nayanaprakan, director-general of the Department of Business Development, reported that the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Commerce Office found 35 companies with Chinese shareholders—33 in Kok Sri Suphan District, one in Mueang District, and one in Phu Phan District. Additionally, 14 companies with 100-percent Thai shareholders were identified in Suwannadan District.

Investigations revealed that a local woman in Kok Sri Suphan District served as an intermediary, collecting copies of household registrations and national ID cards from residents at 500–1,000 baht per document and passing them to Chinese investors, who compensated her at 1,500 baht per item—collecting more than 35 sets of documents in the process. Residents reported they were deceived, told the documents would be used for online business on major platforms, and that most document owners were tenants unaware they were being used. Homeowners claimed they never knew their properties were being registered as limited companies and never consented to their documents being used.

Field inspections by provincial, district, and subdistrict authorities, the provincial commerce office, local police, and the Anti-Money Laundering Office found that registered business addresses showed no business activity whatsoever, no office setup, and no operational activity. All properties remained ordinary residential homes in normal use. Homeowners confirmed they were never informed their properties had been registered as companies and had not authorized anyone to use their household registration documents or ID numbers.

Administrative and commerce officials advised homeowners to file complaints against those involved in misusing their documents, though some homeowners have been reluctant to pursue legal action, possibly suspecting that family members received compensation for providing the documents without their knowledge. Some cases have already resulted in fraud complaints and charges of misappropriating government documents for unlawful benefit.

The Commerce Ministry will conduct deeper investigations to determine whether Thai nationals were used as nominees or shell representatives, with strict enforcement of relevant laws and a comprehensive audit of irregularities in company registrations throughout the province. The department has offered free consultation to affected residents through the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Commerce Office or the Department of Business Development's call center at 1570.

Can You Eat the Same Meal Daily? Health Pros and Cons

Eating the same meal daily can simplify weight management and reduce meal-planning stress, but nutritionists warn it only works if the repeated meal is balanced with protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats rather than processed foods. Addi

Can You Eat the Same Meal Daily? Health Pros and Cons
2d ago Khaosod

Eating the same meal or food type every day is a behavior some choose to control their weight, while others want to reduce the hassle of meal planning. Experts say eating the same foods repeatedly has both benefits and drawbacks for health.

Eating at least one repeated meal daily, often called "Food Monotony," may simplify daily life, make weight control easier, and reduce "decision fatigue" from having to plan menus, buy ingredients, and cook regularly. However, this behavior also carries downsides, particularly the risk of incomplete nutrition if the regularly consumed foods are mostly highly processed or high-fat, salt, or sugar snacks rather than nutritious options.

"I think there's nothing worse than eating the same meal over and over, as long as that meal is balanced and good for your health," said Marion Nestle, professor emeritus of nutrition, food science, and public health at New York University.

Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian from Cleveland Clinic, explains that "balanced" nutrition means a meal containing protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats, making it nutrient-dense. For example, eating yogurt or oatmeal with fresh fruit for breakfast daily is healthier than eating bacon, eggs, and hash browns, according to Dr. Donald Hensrud, associate professor of nutrition and preventive medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

Similarly, a salad makes a better lunch than a ham sandwich on white bread, while grilled chicken or fish with vegetables and brown rice for dinner is a better choice than burgers and french fries every day.

While some use eating the same foods as a weight loss strategy, recent research from Drexel University found that adults eating the same meal daily lost more weight over 12 weeks compared to those eating more varied diets.

Another factor is "decision fatigue," especially for people planning meals for other family members, Zumpano noted.

However, some experts recommend adding slight variety to maintain nutritional value. "If one day you put blueberries in yogurt, the next morning you could switch to strawberries or bananas, or add oats or nuts," Dr. Hensrud suggested.

Zumpano added that if eating a sandwich for lunch regularly, you can keep the format but change the components for variety. "One day you might have a peanut butter and jam sandwich, another day switch to a grilled cheese or chicken sandwich," she said.

However, experts warn against eating too much of any one food type, as it may cause the body to receive certain substances in excess or be exposed to potentially harmful substances like mercury in fish, or nutrients that in high amounts could harm health.

Ancient Buddha Image Draws Crowds at Buriram Temple

Ancient Buddha Image Draws Crowds at Buriram Temple
2d ago Khaosod

Residents of Buriram province have flocked to venerate an ancient Buddha image believed to be nearly 250 years old after a social media post sparked public interest on August 16. The image is housed at Sirisukaram Temple in Nong Prueah village, Thawarawadi district, which locals say has a long history. The ordination hall containing the Buddha image had been closed and unused for many years until villagers recently decided to clean and restore the surrounding area. Upon entering, they discovered the ancient Buddha image inside, which surprised many due to its age and condition. Local residents believe it may be a bronze Buddha dating to the late Ayutthaya period. Some villagers recall seeing the temple and image since childhood, with grandparents and parents having known it since birth, though the exact age cannot be determined. All residents hold deep reverence for the image, which they believe has been part of their community for a very long time. Local resident Srinual Jongkrajom, 44, explained that the temple once had a single monk, with villagers helping maintain it. When a new temple was built nearby, people began worshipping elsewhere, and when the original monk passed away, only an elderly monk remains. The ancient ordination hall was sealed for many years until residents collaborated to open it for cleaning, discovering the old Buddha image and attracting increased visitors. Preliminary assessment suggests the Buddha image may reflect late Ayutthaya artistic style, dating to Buddhist centuries 23-24 or approximately 2172-2310 BE, and if confirmed would represent a historically and culturally valuable artifact. However, the age and era remain speculative based on oral accounts and general appearance, and formal verification from archaeology experts and the Fine Arts Department is needed. Meanwhile, local residents continue caring for the ordination hall and Buddha image, welcoming visitors to pay respects and view this ancient work, hoping it will be preserved as a cultural heritage asset for the community.

Founder's Daughter Defends Temple Land Donation

The founder's daughter defended her family's land donation to a Khon Kaen temple, arguing that reclaiming consecrated ground for religious purposes would betray her father's charitable legacy.

Founder's Daughter Defends Temple Land Donation
2d ago Khaosod

On August 16, 2025, at 3:30 p.m., Suphaphorn Bunpromma, 53, organized the distribution of pad Thai meals at Wat Pa Adulyaram on Kalpapruek Road in Khon Kaen municipality. The meals were given to police, officials, media, and community volunteers who had gathered to clean the temple grounds and offer moral support to Abbot Phrakru Adulsen Nithes amid ongoing security precautions.

Suphaphorn, known as Pee Aiw, is the daughter of Intharee, the temple's first lay custodian and named founder. She explained that her family moved to the area and purchased land from the village headman Heang Phimsri at the time. After the land purchase, the temple was formally established. Heang then became a resident of the temple, while Intharee regularly performed merit-making there. The abbot at the time, Luang Pho Phai, invited Intharee to help manage temple affairs because Intharee had previously served as a sub-district administrator at another temple in Sakon Nakhon province. Intharee began handling temple finances and administrative matters.

Suphaphorn said that when Heang's descendants later demanded the return of the temple land, she felt this was inappropriate. She stressed that since her father had donated the land for the temple's benefit, the family should accept this donation with respect and continue his charitable legacy. She recalled that her father, who was strict about Buddhist principles, had previously discussed land return demands with Heang's family and questioned whether it was right to reclaim land given for a religious purpose. She emphasized that her father, as the temple's first lay custodian, understood the proper handling of temple finances and records, and had urged the abbot to keep documentation secure in case problems arose—a concern that she says has now come to pass.

Four Foreign Tourists Injured When Large Tree Falls at Ayutthaya Temple

Four Foreign Tourists Injured When Large Tree Falls at Ayutthaya Temple
2d ago Khaosod

A large tree suddenly collapsed onto a group of Spanish tourists at Wat Phra Si Sanphet in Ayutthaya Historical Park on August 16 at 12:30 p.m., injuring four people. One male tourist, identified as Javier de Esteban Lucea, 55, suffered serious injuries including a fractured right rib and two broken left leg bones, while three female tourists sustained minor injuries. All victims are Spanish nationals who were part of a group of about 15 tourists visiting the ancient site when the tree fell without warning.

Authorities from the Ayutthaya Community Foundation and Ayutthaya Hospital immediately responded, clearing debris from the victims and transporting them for medical care. Initial investigation suggests the tree may have been old and suffered internal decay or hollow areas at the base, preventing it from supporting its own weight. There was no rain or strong wind at the time of the incident, so structural deterioration is the suspected cause, pending confirmation from relevant authorities.

Following the incident, officials used chainsaws to remove branches and relocate the fallen tree to clear the area and improve safety for visitors. Ayutthaya Provincial Governor Chawanin Wongsakdichirakan visited the injured tourists at the hospital and directed related agencies to provide close care and support. He instructed the provincial tourism and sports office to coordinate with tourist police and ordered the hospital director to provide full medical treatment. To prevent similar incidents, he also ordered the Ayutthaya Historical Park and the provincial Natural Resources and Environment Office to deploy arborists to inspect and assess the structural integrity of all large trees throughout archaeological sites across Ayutthaya Province.

Conservationists Warn AI-Generated Wildlife Images Distort Reality

AI-generated wildlife images are going viral on social media, misleading the public about animal behavior and potentially causing dangerous human-wildlife interactions. Experts warn the realistic fake content undermines conservation efforts

Conservationists Warn AI-Generated Wildlife Images Distort Reality
2d ago Khaosod

A black-and-white image appeared to show an orangutan cradling an endangered clouded leopard deep in the forests of Sabah, Malaysia — but the viral photo was not only improbable, it was fake, generated by artificial intelligence. This is part of a broader trend of AI-created wildlife images that experts warn poses risks to both animals and humans.

AFP fact-checkers have identified numerous synthetic images of similar quality, ranging from an elephant climbing a tree to escape flooding in Myanmar to a pink dolphin leaping from water in the Philippines. These images are typically accompanied by heartwarming narratives and shared widely across multiple languages on platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and X.

While such images may seem like harmless feel-good content rather than dangerous misinformation, experts caution that highly realistic AI-generated wildlife images depicting animals with pet-like or even human-like behavior can distort public perception of wildlife and undermine conservation efforts.

"This misunderstanding can cause people to approach animals too closely or interact with them in unsafe ways," said Jose Guerrero-Casado, a zoology professor at the University of Cordoba in Spain. He cited a widely reported incident in Xinjiang in northwestern China last January, when a woman was attacked by a rare snow leopard after attempting to get close to photograph it.

China's forestry department increased patrols in the area following the incident and warned the public to maintain safe distances when encountering wildlife.

Conservationists note that AI images portraying wildlife as cute or endearing make it harder for social media users to distinguish fact from fiction and may encourage inappropriate use of wildlife.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and TikTok now require users to label AI-generated or significantly altered realistic images. Both platforms say they have tools to automatically detect and label AI-generated content. However, many wildlife posts remain unlabeled despite creators noting in captions that the images are artificial.

Court Hands 5-Year Sentence in MP Shooting Case

Court Hands 5-Year Sentence in MP Shooting Case
2d ago Khaosod

Narathiwat Provincial Court has convicted a defendant of destroying a government vehicle belonging to the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to eliminate evidence in the shooting of Kamalsakdi Liawmaow, a Pheu Thai Party MP from Narathiwat. The court determined the defendant guilty of assisting others in avoiding punishment and destroying, concealing, or losing evidence of the crime, as well as receiving stolen goods for profit. The court initially sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment, but reduced the sentence by half to 5 years after he confessed, with no suspension of sentence. He must also pay compensation to ISOC, which was also a victim. This constitutes significant progress in the assassination attempt on Kamalsakdi Liawmaow. The shooting occurred in March 2025 while the MP was traveling home in Bacho district, Narathiwat. Official investigations have resulted in multiple arrests, comprising five active perpetrators and two suspected masterminds. The perpetrators include former rangers and navy personnel, while the masterminds include an ISOC military officer who allegedly provided the government vehicle used in the attack. Notably, military firearms under state control were also used in the incident. Prime Minister Anuthm Charnweerakul has issued strict orders to control firearms following the school shooting incident that resulted in numerous deaths. Beyond controlling civilian and government official firearms, the premier has also directed relevant agencies to intensify efforts against illegal weapons. However, the southern border situation presents another critical concern requiring serious government attention regarding how to prevent government firearms from being used for violence, as exemplified by the MP case. Therefore, in addition to illegal weapons and civilian-owned firearms, government weapons should also be subject to rigorous inspection.
