Rayong Hit by Worst Flooding in 60 Years as Dam Overflows
Rayong faced its worst flooding in six decades as the Prasae reservoir overflowed, sending torrents through the Prasae River and submerging hundreds of homes and durian orchards in Kaeng District on September 27.
On September 27 at 10:50 p.m., the Sathaheap disaster response team deployed to Village 4, Krasaibun Subdistrict, Kaeng District, Rayong, after flash flooding inundated homes and fruit orchards across a wide area. Large volumes of water from the Prasae reservoir flowed down the Prasae River before spilling over into low-lying areas, affecting hundreds of households, particularly in durian plantations.
Krasaibun Subdistrict Administration had previously warned residents that water levels in the Prasae reservoir were critical, with water overflowing through the spillway, and urged those in flood-prone areas to evacuate to higher ground immediately. After receiving reports from residents, the Sathaheap disaster response team deployed personnel and equipment to assist, especially elderly residents and those unable to evacuate in time. Officials worked carefully due to strong currents and continuously rising water levels. They also helped move essential belongings to higher ground and placed sandbags around vulnerable homes.
By 3:15 a.m. on September 28, the situation remained concerning with no clear sign of water levels dropping. Authorities continued monitoring and assisting residents in affected areas. One long-time resident, who has lived in the area for about 60 years, stated this was the worst flooding they had ever witnessed, with water arriving so rapidly residents had no time to prepare. Local officials urged residents in low-lying areas to monitor the situation closely and evacuate immediately if ordered.
