That evening Mr. Benz provided food and alcohol for the team. Later, while Ms. Oi was taking a shower, he pushed open the bathroom door and raped her despite her cries for help; the two male volunteers who were sharing the accommodation did not intervene. After the assault Mr. Benz attempted to lie down next to her, but she shouted him away and then called relatives in Trat to inform them before deciding to report the incident to police. Officers sent Ms. Oi for a medical examination at Klaeng Hospital and invited Mr. Benz for questioning; he denied all allegations, saying the offence was not caught in flagrante and that they must await forensic results. Police have not detained him, asking him to return to his home in Trat while awaiting further summons for questioning. Ms. Oi insists she will pursue the case to the fullest to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
